Melbourne is Australia's capital of culture and sport. Victoria's state capital really does hold something for everyone, whether you're interested in catching a game at the MCG, sipping a chai latte in one of Melbourne's hidden laneways, or sunning yourself in the beautiful parks and gardens. Melbourne is home to large sporting events like the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Open tennis championship and cricket's Boxing Day test match. It's also the birthplace of AFL. With so much going for this amazing city, it's no coincidence that The Economist named Melbourne as the world's most liveable city three times in recent years.

Felicity - April 2007
Melbourne is the best city in Australia. Great shopping, lots of culture, beautiful buildings and friendly people. A little chilly in winter, but generally good all year round!

Visited Melbourne AGES ago when I was 8. Don\'t remeber too much, but definitiely don\'t go in the winter like I did, it\'s pretty dark and miserable that time of year. I remember the shopping was pretty good though. And those trams are pretty freaky the way cars have to give way to them!

Melbourne is great for shopping and has a cosmopolitan feel. Haven\'t been to Melbourne for a few years now and am looking forward to another visit.

What a city. Great nightlife, restaurants and people. Explore Southbank, Botanical Gardens, visit St Kilda, and take a day trip to Healsville sanctuary. Spend at least a week exploring.

I\'ve been to Melb a few times now, sometimes for work, mostly for play. I always discover something new, and the weather especially has improved.

I have been to Melbourne quite a few times and each time I love it. It\'s the best place to shop and go out during the night. It\'s a lot like Sydney but not as bus. Lots of fashion and food and multiculturalism. I just don\'t like the way they drive in the city - a bit confusing turning right from the left lane. but all in all its a wonderful place.

My favourite Australian city after Sydney, the culture, arts and events that are always on make every visit a pleasure

One of the classiest cities in Australia, its always a joy to visit, especially in summer when it is much more comfortable than Sydney

My home town and the best city in the world. Great people, great food, fabulous coffee, great beaches, great shops, easy to navigate etc.. (i know I am biased!)

One of my favourite cities in the world. Where else combines fantastic public transport, terrific cultural opportunities and unrivalled sporting facilities. Food and shopping are first rate with different suburbs reflecting the culture within them. Lygon St a must, as is St Kilda and if you are visiting in summer an outdoor movie in the Botanic Gardens is a real treat.

See the city first by the Circle tram, the spread out to Southgate, Docklands, Carlton and Prahran to indulge yourself in eating, shopping and being entertained in a variety of galleries, theatres and nightclubs. Forget the weather- just experience the dream.

R.Hale - April 2006
We stayed at the Carlton Crest Hotel with 2 of our visitors from Wales in the UK. We were given a 9th Floor apartment with kitchen,2 br a sitting room study and 2 bathrooms. It was superb, more than that we were looked after by the most helpful ,professional staff I have ever encountered anywhere in the world. Public transport was close and very convenient as well as cheap. Our Welsh guests were dumfounded and took reels of photos daily (of the hotel suite, mainly) and we stayed extra days. The price per night was excellent, too.I could not make any higher recommendation for this hotel.

Cold, miserable, old Melbourne with four seasons in one day! I hate having to carry a coat and a change of clothes with me in case the weather turns bad. Would not live here in a pink fit!

A cosmopolitan city with a famed cafe culture, some great restaurants, especially along South Bank, and a distinctly cultural ambience compared to Sydney.

This city hasn\'t been repeatedly voted \"World\'s most liveable city\" for no reason! Get yourself here & have a look for yourself!

Nasser - October 2006
Whilst Melbourne doesn\'t have the world famous icons of Sydney, it does have it\'s own charm and a walk along the Yarra very pleasant. Plenty to do as it\'s a busy place. You could spend as long as you want there really.

Lubosh - December 2006
Stayed at Rydges on Bell in Preston. A very prestigious setting, upmarket facilities, prices are lower due to the fact that the old hotel next is being rebuilt, which means the view is that of a building site... Still, there is a great value, and their stand-by rate for studio rooms in unbeatable!
Downsides were - lack of parking at times, and some equipment in the gym was out of order, and during my stay the sauna was not functioning either.

Shirley - December 2006
Biased, but this is the pick of Australia\'s cities. Beautiful parks, superb shopping, better restaurants, so much to see. Allow yourself at least ten days. The markets are excellent, the galleries, there is little that does not excel in this finest of cities! For something different and a taste of real Melbourne, visit the Preston Market on a Saturday. Get there by train. This is not a tourist market.

Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world. For women there is plenty of culture and shopping. They say Sydney is an American city in attitude and Melbourne is more European with it\'s boulverades and hidden alleys.

As a Sydneysider I actually like Melbourne as it has better roads, better trains, better lifestyle, but only problem is the weather. Plenty of places to eat, plenty to see and in general a good city

Heather - November 2006
Essentially the coolest city in Australia, unbelievably cultural with an amazing arts scene. Suprisingly laidback for a city of its size. Visit the Immigration Museum on Flinders Street to see how melbourne found her roots and settled the area. Excellent shopping in the City and on Chapel Street, the city is a foodies dream with world class restaurants everywhere you look and an incredible ive music scene.

James - June 2006
Melbourne is a great city to explore as a traveller. The city center has so many world class restaurants and bars and clothing shops, you could spend many days and nights having fun and spending up. Southbank and Docklands are great for water views and restaurants and bars. St Kilda is perfect on sunny days, especially the new sea baths right on the beach. Melbournians are friendly and love meeting travellers. The only thing missing is surf beaches close to the city - you need to drive an hour and a half to either Torquay or Gunnamatta for a good surf.
