Why the name of our house "Doña Catalina"
History and legend:
In 1392 Queen Catherine of Lancaster ordered the construction of a church where a shepherd (Pedro Amador) appeared to the image of the Virgin (from La Soterraña), not far from the village of Nieva, west of the present Segovia province. Legend has it that when he went with the sheep, he encountered a huge snake. At that moment he prayed that nothing would happen to him and the virgin appeared to his aid. This attempt to fire the shotgun, but it was jammed, and the virgin interceded for him and killed the snake. Currently this can be seen on one side of the church. Seven years later the church must have been finished and was handed over to the Dominicans, at which time the monastic facilities began. Some time later, the queen dies, and the financial contributions for the completion of the monastery disappear; leaving the construction as at present. The most beautiful thing is the north door and especially the cloister, which despite being a 15th century structure, reproduces what could perfectly be a late Romanesque cloister from the late 12th or early 13th centuries. It is a quadrilateral with twin columns, monolithic capitals and slightly pointed arches. The capitals reproduce sculptural scenes with a similar arrangement as the traditional Romanesque capitals, only the carving is more naturalistic.
These capitals reproduce biblical scenes, an agricultural calendar, hunting scenes, the construction of the cloister, convent life, noble shields ...
