About this property

Rural retreat for nature lovers

Honeysuckle Cottage is a light and airy first floor apartment, with French doors and terrace overlooking the small valley in which our home nestles. Here you can breakfast in the morning sun or have aperitifs at the end of the day. Our gardens and fields are abundant in wildlife. You will be serenaded by the cuckoos and crickets in the summer and entertained by the often comical bird population all year round. If you are quiet you will also meet our resident red squirrels, hares and possibly deer. Our horses with the peaceful aura they bring, are never too far away, their field wraps around the gardens and their barn is adjacent to Honey suckle Cottage. Make yourselves at home on the garden terrace, where an outdoors kitchen and BBQ enable you to enjoy meals outside.

There is much to enjoy in this area - walking, cycling or canoeing in Les Alpes Mancelles, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or visit the many pretty towns and medieval villages such as Saint Ceneri le Gerei, Fresnay sur Sarthe, Sainte Suzanne and St Leonard des Bois. We are an hour's drive from Le Mans and the race track, an hour from Laval, 40 minutes from Alencon and two hours from the Loire Valley.

Unfortunately we are not able to accept children due to the proximity of livestock and an unfenced pond.

I came to live in France to fulfil a life-long dream. Here in the peace of the Mayenne countryside we live in a small valley which is home to much bird and wildlife. I insist on caring for the land organically, so the garden is not tidy but you will see lots of wildflowers, birds, bees, butterflies and insects. I am English but totally Francophile and love the French way of life - respectful of nature, each other and of course wonderful food and wine. I am an author and a therapist.

Why they chose this property

My property is instantly relaxing when you arrive - there is just something about it. There is a natural spring on site with a small pond which runs into a stream at the foot of the valley, so for most of the year you can hear the tinkling of running water from all round the garden. Birdsong abounds and in the summer the crickets and cuckoos compete for centre stage.

What makes this property unique

From the apartment you look down onto the garden and the fields where the horses graze. The apartment, which feels more like a cottage with its wood-burner and beautifully appointed rustic kitchen area, is comfortable, cosy and light. Visitors are welcome to roam around the 2 hectares of land, and enjoy the tranquillity and wildness which it offers. In late Summer and Autumn we have an abundance of fruit from our fruit trees and you were welcome to help yourselves.
