About this property

'As Happy as God In France' at La Chartreuse du Maine, unique estate in Dordogne

LA CUISINE D'ALICE
La Cuisine d’Alice is a stylish one bedroom cottage on the grounds of the French country estate known as La Chartreuse du Maine. When you enter La Cuisine d’Alice, you step into a spacious room (600 square feet) with high ceilings and beautiful limestone walls. The sunny, modern kitchen has a window overlooking the courtyard of the château, where a table and chairs and two lounge chairs invite you to dine al fresco or sit in the sun. The living room has a table and chairs for dining inside, as well as a comfortable leather sofa and armchair facing the large wood burning fireplace. As you step up four stone stairs, you are in the master bedroom featuring a brand-new King-size bed made with fine linen sheets. The stone walls of your bedroom are of warm beige local limestone. The sunny private bathroom features a large modern bathtub/shower and a dormer window facing a peaceful pasture field.

LA CHARTREUSE DU MAINE:
La Cuisine d'Alice is one of the three independent holiday homes located in the grounds of Le Maine, an early 18th century delightful Chartreuse. Here everything breathes peace, harmony and beauty. Located in the centre of the Dordogne region, La Chartreuse du Maine is the perfect relaxing base to experience France, get to know the Dordogne, go in search of 350,000 years of history of mankind, discover local gastronomy and wines, and enjoy an easy way of life in a peaceful, bucolic atmosphere.
The estate of La Chartreuse du Maine encompasses 67 acres of gardens, meadows and woods with many pathways, on the edge of the peaceful village of Cubjac. Within Le Maine you will enjoy relaxing in a lounge chair by the sunny swimming pool that overlooks the estate.

THE VILLAGE OF CUBJAC:
The shady tree-lined entrance to La Chartreuse du Maine is on the outskirts of the village of Cubjac, which is in the Dordogne region on the banks of the peaceful Auvezere River. You can easily walk to the village center for a drink at a local café or to do your shopping at the local bakery and general store. There is even a farmers’ market on Fridays with fresh local produce all year round, and hand-made regional crafts for sale in summer.

THE REGION AND 'PÉRIGORDINE LIFESTYLE':
It is not pure coincidence that man has been living in this paradise for over 350 000 years. When strolling alone in the superb unspoilt countryside you can just imagine why. Often, mostly in low season, you might catch yourself thinking the Dordogne has not changed at all. The joy of holidays in Dordogne is that nowadays you still can fully indulge in that ‘simple art de vivre’ which all these cultural and historical sites speak of. The Dordogne is synonymous with gastronomy and life in Perigord revolves around markets, recipes, seasons of mushrooms, truffles, foie-gras, walnuts, goat cheese, strawberries, wine harvest. Everybody here has a kitchen garden to grow their own preferred vegetable varieties. Every woman has her old secret recipes, a family heritage.

Highly recommend
We are an Australian couple travelling in France and were so happy we had chosen this amazing property located on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Cubjac. The whole property is very beautiful and our accommodation was the same, just perfect, everything required was present and of top quality. The bed was extremely comfortable with lovely linen and towels. The hosts Catherine and Maxence were totally obliging at every opportunity to ensure our stay was the best it could possibly be.

A slice of heaven!
We absolutely adored staying at Le Maine. It was truly a slice of heaven. To see the beautiful driveway leading up to the main house and beyond to the cottages was such a sight for sore eyes as we had flown from Calgary to Montreal to Paris to Bordeaux and drove for 2 hours east from Bordeaux. We were absolutely exhausted. The photos do not do this place justice. It is so beautiful! Catherine and Maxence are delightful and helpful. They definitely want you to enjoy yourselves and their gorgeous property. If you are considering staying at this property, I would highly encourage you to say yes, yes, yes!! We will back!

Perfect Stay in a perfect location.
Cuisine de Alice was even better than the photos and the description indicated. That in combination with perfect hosts and Maxence's magic map allowed us a wonderful fortnight in the second half of September. We'll definitely try to come back.

A perfect place in Perigord
We had a wonderful week in Cuisine D'Alice. The pictures on the website make it look lovely and in reality it's even better. The cottage itself is beautifully presented with very careful, tasteful attention to detail and comfort. It has its own garden which is very private and much larger than we expected with sunny spots, shade, and a range of garden furniture. The wider grounds include swathes of lavender and herbs and vegetables and an array of plants in pots as well as acres of woodland. The roses weren't in flower when we were there but must be fabulous. We enjoyed the pool every day. It's clean, well appointed and large enough to swim in, rather than simply cooling off (although it's great for that too!) Cubjac is pretty. It's small but has a great bakery, and a little market on a Friday. We booked a canoeing trip through the local campsite, which was fun. You really need a car to explore the area and there are lots of interesting places within easy reach. Hautefort and St Jean de Cole particularly stick in the memory. For a restful, peaceful, memorable and magical holiday, I'd have no hesitation in recommending Cuisine D'Alice. Catherine and Maxence, with their supporting cast of various animals, are perfect hosts.

Best ever
I frequently travel and stay in VRBO properties. This one is the best one in my experience. Beautifully decorated, comfortable, with everything I needed to prepare meals with produce from local farmer's markets. It is peaceful, quiet, yet near so many wonderful local attractions and historical sites. The owners are delightful and welcomed me with a bottle of wine, walnut bread from the local bakery, local goat cheese, fresh strawberries and a bouquet of flowers. I knew from the 1st day that I wouldn't want to leave when the week was up. Will be returning.

Nous remercions Catherine et Maxence pour leur accueil et leur gentillesse. Séjour de charme que nous recommandons sans hésiter.

A wonderful experience
We had an amazing stay at Le Maine in September. The Cuisine d’Alice was a joy -- large, and beautifully and thoughtfully decorated. It had a well-equipped kitchen that we often used to eat the wonderful prepared foods we bought in the nearby town of Périgueux. We had our own large private garden area where we sat whenever we could and where we were often joined by Bibi, the delightful resident cat. We admired the beautiful landscaping and walked in the woods on the estate, making friends with Zebulon the donkey. Catherine and Maxence were excellent and congenial hosts, helping us with suggestions about places to go and making impeccable restaurant recommendations. We marvelled at everything we saw in the Dordogne in our 12 days there. From caves to fabulous gardens to beautiful towns to museums, there was no shortage of opportunities to admire and learn. Our visits to Lascaux and Rocamadour were highlights of our stay. Last but not least were the people we encountered, who were friendly, inquisitive and engaging.

Perfect property
We stayed at La Cuisine d'Alice from 13-25 August. This charming property was clean and comfortable with lots of lovely individual touches. The cottage is much more spacious than it looks on the website photographs. It has its own outside seating area which was ideal for enjoying quiet meals. The surrounding grounds were extensive and well kept, as was the lovely swimming pool. Catherine and Maxence were charming and discreet hosts. We thoroughly recommend this property.

We did not want to leave!
Had an amazing relaxing stay for a week. La Cuisine d'Alice was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Catherine and Maxence's warm welcome was very appreciated and their helpful advice throughout the stay was invaluable. We loved the pool and woodland walks as well as the resident cat and donkey. We feel that we have only just scratched the surface of this beautiful part of France and as La Cuisine d'Alice had everything we could ever wish for we will be returning.

Excellent experience at the farmhouse and a great location in the Perigord
Overall a wonderful experience at Le Maine. Our hosts were kind, gracious and most helpful in exploring the area. The facilities were immaculate and well equipped. The grounds are fantastic with an outdoor pool, but we enjoyed most was the hiking/running trails on the property (to work off the foi gras, truffles, duck confit, cheese and wine). We loved the donkey and cat on the property. The small town of Cubjac is sleepy but has one of the best boulangeries in the region. The property is within a 30 minute drive to Perigeaux. Overall, we very highly recommend this property if you are looking for an off beaten path escape with a great central location as a base to explore this region of France.

Our 'Happy Place'
Despite the unsettled weather during our stay La Chartreuse du Maine was nothing short of wonderful. Catherine and Max were the perfect hosts and did their utmost to make our holiday both enjoyable and memorable. We were kindly greeted with freshly cut flowers from the beautiful gardens of La Maine and a fridge full of mouth watering goodies which went down a treat after our lengthy drive to reach Cubjac. We fell in love with the place as soon as we arrived and forming an instant bond with Bibi the resident cat certainly clinched the deal, we struck up quite a friendship and was really sad to leave her. My husband found Zebulon the donkey highly amusing, notably with his loud and unmistakeable eeyore that was to be our daily alarm clock, a welcome wakeup call following a wonderful night’s sleep in our sumptuous bed. Our charming little French conversion was faultless, la Cuisine d’Alice has been impressively restored to create the perfect ‘French country chic’ bolthole for two, its bold colours and antique pieces providing a warm and welcoming place to stay from home. The bedroom certainly took centre stage on its mezzanine floor, the idyllic spot to enjoy your morning cuppa whilst appreciating the rest of the open living space in all its grandeur!! The La Maine estate is vast and praise to the owners for cleverly positioning the pool in the perfect spot to enjoy the pretty roof tops and breathtaking scenery afar. The view of the main house when you enter La Maine’s sweeping driveway is simply stunning, beautifully perched with its cool rustic shutters and ivy clad exterior. La Chartreuse du Maine is extremely peaceful, you really can just kick back with a good book, glass of vino and forget the stresses of everyday life, unquestionably well worth the long journey from the UK.

Top of the Line Comfort in a Country Retreat
"La Cusisine d'Alice" is a cozy and beautifully equiped property for a couple that was designed with style and efficiency by the owner, Catherine Lambert. There are two other rental properties on the Chartreuse du Maine property in the small Perigord Blanc village of Cujac, some 30 km. east of Perigueux. We spent a wonderful week there exploring the Perigord region and the Dordogne, returning each day to the comfort of this quiet sanctuary. Catherine and Maxence Digouy both speak perfect English, love their region, and offer excellent advice on what to do and where to eat. They are accomplished and wonderful hosts.

Excellent accommodation in wonderful surroundings. Catherine and Max the perfect hosts very welcomin
We needed a restful holiday in idyllic surroundings and Cuisine d Alice was the perfect spot. Exploring The region of Perigord was very much like stepping back in time So many interesting places to visit within easy driving distance Our hosts Catherine and Maxence were very welcoming helpful and obviously very proud of the area. The property itself has everything you can ask for cleaned to a very high standard and has a warm welcoming atmosphere. The grounds are scenic and well worth exploring Catherine and Maxence are more than happy for guests to do so. Not a lot going on in Cubjac but it retains an old world charm and you will be glad to have experienced it. A car is a must unless you are happy to relax around the pool in the garden or around the grounds. This destination has the best of both worlds we alternated our days between exploring the region and resting around the grounds. A week simply was not long enough to fully appreciate the area. We thoroughly recommend this property and will definitely be returning. Although next time it will be for a fortnight at least.

Incredible Honeymoon
What a fantastic place to visit. I went here for our honeymoon and it was everything I had hoped for and more. The cottage itself was delightful, beautifully decorated and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. It had its own private garden where you could sun bathe, eat and have BBQs. The pool was a short walk away and was very clean and refreshing. Catherine and Maxene were AMAZING, spoke very good english and were happy to help out with recommendations. I would recommend Le Maine to anyone.

An idyllic place to stay
We stayed at La Cuisine d'Alice for a week whilst we explored the Perigeux region of the Dordogne. It turned out to be an idyllic place to stay and is every bit as good as the description if not better. Beautifully and tastefully fitted out, peaceful, private and centrally located for visiting the numerous sites of interest in the area. The hosts Catherine and Maxence were charming and helpful and on hand to offer advice on where to go and what to see. We would certainly recommend La Cuisine d'Alice as a lovely place to stay.

Charming - The owners and their home!
Fantastic! Beyond our expectations! We stayed with friends at this delightful cottage. It had everything you would need...all kinds of kitchen equipment which was perfect for the four of us as we love to cook. There was wood for a real fire! There was fresh fruit and vegetables you could pick from the owners' garden. We received help on where to go and how to get to any of the wonderful sights near by. The home we stayed in was clean and well appointed. We would recommend it to all of our friends! We liked the Farmer's Market. We went on a kayak ride down the Dordogne and it was a fabulous trip. We went to see the geese and buy Fois Gras (owner knows the best place to go). Enjoy!

Wonderful, warm, and enchanting cottage and owners!
Our friends and ourselves had an exceptional time in this darling cottage. There is the owners home, the cottage we stayed in and another equally charming third cottage. All of the amenities were there. We even had logs for the fireplace and every kitchen utensil you could want. We were allowed to help ourselves to fruit growing in the owners garden. They gave us information on whatever we needed such as the best way to travel. what not to miss, etc. We LOVED the whole experience there. We would go again and tell all of our friends to stay there as well. You will love their sheep and their donkey!!

A stylish, comfortable and peaceful gite
We wished for a quiet, relaxing, cosy Christmas in the beautiful Perigord countryside - we got it! We have travelled in France for over 20 years and we have never stayed somewhere quite so stylish, comfortable and well equipped - it's even better than the photographs which is rare. The house was warm and with the fire light it was super cosy. You could lie in bed at night and see the fire - perfect! Maxance and Catherine were wonderful and friendly hosts and full of useful information and help - nothing seemed a problem. I adored the family's donkey and pet sheep who happily ate all that I fed them. Winter walks through their unspoilt woods, before back to the gite and the open fire. A great way to end one year and start another!

About the host

Hosted by Catherine Lambert

Host profile image
Your French English-speaking hosts, Catherine and Maxence:
We live permanently on site and are delighted to welcome you to our “Maison de famille” and share with you our passion of this Perigord region which has inspired so many writers, philosophers and artists. We are happy to share our extensive knowledge of the Dordogne region, and love to help with suggestions of best places to visit, scenic roads and itineraries, activities, history of the region, little-known fine restaurants where you can enjoy regional specialities such as magret de canard and foie gras; wineries, farmers' organic markets… to make your stay with us a wonderful Perigourdine experience. However, we are very discreet and respectful to our visitors’ privacy.

Why they chose this property

La Chartreuse du Maine has been our family home for four generations. Catherine's great-grandfather bought it in 1925, even then, to escape the ‘busy town of Limoges’! All our lives, whilst living and working in Paris, we spent most of our holidays in this Perigord we love. Catherine was a photographer and Art director in advertising agencies, and Maxence is an artist, painter and illustrator. 20 years ago we decided to leave Paris, restore our great-grandfather’s château and settle in the Dordogne. We wanted to to pass a certain 'Art de vivre' on to friends and guests who would appreciate the harmony of an authentic place in this peaceful region of Dordogne.

What makes this property unique

Because of the unique location of La Chartreuse du Maine, in the centre of the Dordogne near Sarlat, Lascaux 4 (Centre International de l'Art pariétal), Périgueux and Brantôme, you will have so much to visit you might feel ‘overloaded’! Maxence is happy to help you with his Magic Map where our best spots and itineraries are highlighted. Anyway, accept the idea that you will never have enough time to see every place of interest, unless you come back every year for decades (which we would love). So, please take it easy, select the sites you’re interested in: visit less, but in more depth. Or take the other option, don’t plan anything, wander aimlessly in this away-from-it-all countryside and let yourself be filled with wonder at every bend in the road. Whatever you choose, make the most of this quiet timeless life: at every moment experience the peace, harmony and beauty which are definitely the real magic of Perigord.
