The cozy cottage is the perfect base to explore the Painted Hills -one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon just 9 miles away, and all the other units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Smith Rock, Ochocco National forest, Fossil Beds and more.. The Painted Hills are located 9 miles from Mitchell. Sheep Rock is about 38 miles and houses the monument's visitor center as well as the Thomas Condon Paleontology museum with its large collection of ancient fossils. The Clarno unit is close to Fossil, about an hour drive from Mitchell. Another one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon- the awesome Smith Rock is about 1.5 hours away. All routes are on "the Journey through Time" Scenic Byway and the drives pass through spectacular diverse landscapes with magnificent views around every bend of the road. There is an abundance of outdoor recreation like hiking, fishing, bird and wildlife watching, swimming or rafting the John Day River and hunting for fossils. It's possible to dig your own fossils in the Wheeler High School Fossil Beds for a small fee.

Another happy stay at Hollyhock
This was our third stay at Hollyhock. The quiet, the lovely flowers, shrubs, and trees, and -- best of all -- the warm welcome shown to us by Barbara and Aruna have made this our favorite getaway spot.

Peaceful Perfect Garden Cottage Oasis!
Barbara has created truly beautiful garden retreats with her cottages. Hollyhock Cottage was perfect for my husband, myself and dog for 3 nights. We had sunny weather to explore the magical Painted Hills & surrounding area. The cottage had all the amenities one could need and was clean and cozy, plenty of hot water, books, DVDs and information on the area. We dream of returning one day. Thank you so much Barbara, your warmth and hospitality will always be remembered.

I felt home right away when I entered the cottage. Cozy, clean and sunny. you can go from the bedroom directly in the garden and take your coffee out there. The owners are very friendly and creative, you can see that whereever you look. I'll be back for sure and fell in love with the Painted Hills.

A comfortable, beautiful stay in a remarkable part of the world.
My adult daughter and I stayed in Hollyhock House for two nights in October and felt completely at home. Barbara and Aruna's thoughtful attention to detail meant we had everything we needed at our fingertips. Bring food for your meals ~ the house is well equipped for cooking. The John Day Fossil National Monument and Painted Hills are treasures we were able to explore knowing a cozy home awaited us at the end of the day. Highlights of our stay included encountering flocks of quail in the backyard, seeing a dozen plus wild turkeys on our walk through the neighborhood and observing more than one herd of deer by the roadside. The maps and reading material provided will make it easy for you to plan your forays into this magical land. Thank you, Barbara and Aruna.

Charming and clean cottage
I read positive reviews of the Hollyhock guest house (Painted Hills Vacation Rentals) on Yelp, but was not sure what to expect when I pulled in. Mitchell is a very tiny town (population 121) in a remote area. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean (really) and charming it was! It actually looked better inside than in the photos. The carpeted floors look brand new and the whole place feels well cared for. Although it was hot during the day, the shaded area and many windows kept the house cool. I had everything I needed in the kitchen to make some simple meals, and the bed was very comfortable. Aruna and Barbara even left a dozen fresh eggs for me! I loved it and hope to return someday, and would definitely recommend it to others looking for a base to see the painted hills and other area attractions.

Delightful cottage and Innkeeper
Hollyhock House was full of great amenities and charm. Everything you need for a week's stay and to make your own meals. Barbara and Aruna (her daughter) are helpful, hospitable, and go the extra mile for guests. Barbara asked if we needed any food items at Prineville as she was making a chore run there and I gave her a food list with some 12 or items. She didn't blanch at all at extra trouble I put her to, and was kind to help us out; along with recommending sights to see. Mitchell is a great place to stay and we met and talked with a number of residents who were wonderful to get to know. Beautiful area. Great surprises.

An Oasis in Sagebrush Country
After exploring the hot and rocky environs, coming back to the gardens of the Hollyhock House is a delight. they are green and fragrant, with doves cooing and wind rustling the poplars like water. The kitchen has everything you need and the linens are clean and delightful. Stargazing is wonderful in this area. I have returned here many times. The owners are gracious and helpful. It is dog friendly and full of charm. I can't get enough.

Hollyhock Guest House
We can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay at te Hollyhock Guest House. We were wishing we could extend our stay. We were glad we arrived early evening to enjoy the patio with games and drinks before dark. We walked the grounds, enjoyed the garden/flowers. Our dog was delighted to run free with the closed in property. Sleeping accommodations were perfect, very comfortable and spacious. Everything you could want for comfort of a home, full kitchen, bath with all amenities. Found a wonderful tea and coffee to enjoy on the darling porch in the morning. Beautiful sky view at night to star gaze. Aruna you have a gem in MItchell! Thank you! Juliana and Family

Mitchell solitude
Stayed at this beautiful cottage during spring break and used it as a base to explore all three units of the John Day Fossil Bed Monuments. Also did some hiking in other nearby areas. The cottage was clean, quiet and well supplied. I wish we had more time, as this is an incredibly diverse landscape and impossible to cover in only one week. Will definitely be back.

We stay two nights with my 4 years old to investigate Painted Hill area. This cottage bring us a lot of feel during the time. The cottage is comfortable, and the Owner is show her passion about the area. The hand made map is helpful, also bring us to a lot of new place we never know before we come. We bring a lot food to cook and did BBQ :). Kid watch the DVD as they like, and see the stars at night. It's very nice place to stay. Sure will be back to stay in this place again !!

Cosy stay, only decent place in Mitchell
Cosy stay, and this is the only decent place in Mitchell. There were extra bedding/blankets. The kitchen was stocked with some instant food items like pasta/rice and in case the visitor arrives at odd hours or stuck with bad weather, he/she will be able to make it. The only complain is that for a two-night stay, we did not experience a room service for cleaning and trash removal etc.

Charming Cottage
Overall we had a wonderful experience. The owners were super kind to let us adjust our days and we had beautiful weather. We did have an issue with the number of spiders. My husband probably killed 15 or more quarter sized spiders. Aside from that it was a great spot.

The Perfect Cozy Cottage
During our visit to the Painted Hills region of Oregon we stayed in the Hollyhock Cottage. This was a wonderful treat and a place full of surprises. The cottage is very comfortable and had the best supplied kitchen of any place I have ever stayed, that included a kitchen. You will not want for anything. The farm fresh eggs were a real treat as well. There are plenty of towels too. The gardens around the cottage are incredible and a delight to explore. It does take some getting used to not having cell phone service out in Mitchell, or the surrounding areas, but the cottage does have an extensive DVD library. There were probably 100 DVDs to pick from. There is Wi-Fi, but too slow to support Netflix. My 15 year old son really enjoyed exploring the game room, which is located behind Hollyhock Cabin in a separate building (it is full of games and DVDs). This can also be rented for a small fee. I think the next time I return I will bring my son’s friend and rent this for the two of them. It is a great space for teenagers. There is also a laundry room with a washer and dryer and laundry soap if you need to wash clothes. Just about anything you need you will find here. At night go outside and go star gazing. If you check out https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/index.cfm you can find out when the International Space Station goes by and get a very clear view. We happen to see it just after 11:00 p.m. This is truly the best place to stay during your visit to the Painted Hills area. My suggestion is a minimum of 3 nights in order to see the Clarno Unit, Painted Hills Unit and the Sheep Rock Unit areas. If your teenagers complain about the lack of technology you should tell them once upon a time we did not even have DVDs.

Painted Hills Cottage
We enjoyed our stay at the Painted Hills Cottage, the place was clean and comfortable and had a beautiful garden area. Its close proximity to the John Day Fossil Beds and Painted Hills make it an excellent home base for exploring the area. The owners were friendly and helpful and our dog was welcome at the cottage also. Mitchell is a very isolated small town and services are limited, when we visit again we will probably bring more groceries and supplies as the cottage has a fully equipped kitchen. We recommend the Painted Hills Cottages for anyone visiting the area!

Lives up to its name -- a romantic European cottage!
We stayed in one of three cottages, ours was the Hollyhock Cottage. It was warm and cozy with modern European Swedish-style furniture. The bed was outstanding with a fluffy down comforter and downy pillows, and the kitchen was fully equipped with non-stick frying pans, stainless steel pots, utensils and knives and forks. The tableware was colorful Ikea. There was an outside garden with vines, trees, and colorful flowers. This is the second time we have stayed at Painted Hills Cottages and I'm sure we'll be back a third time. It is one of our favorite places to stay and we have recommended it to friends.

My mother Barb and I started this business in 2008 and have enjoyed it ever since. We're originally from Germany and lived for a long time in Seattle were my family ran a European restaurant in the famous Pike Place Market for 10 years. After we sold the restaurant in 2000, I went on to study herbal medicine at Bastyr University in Seattle. Here in Eastern Oregon I enjoy gardening and growing herbs, hiking, landscape photography and taking care of our guests. My business partner and mother is an amazing creative force and the master gardener. She's almost everyday in the garden of one of the cottages tending to her flowers and loves to meet our guests for a chat.

Why they chose this property

My parents travelled quite a bit in the States and fell in love with Eastern Oregon. Both are artists and appreciated the amazing landscapes in this area with the breathtaking views around each corner. The Painted Hills especially caught their eye and so they decided to buy the properties in MItchell just 9 miles away from the national monument. A few years later, we bought the property out on Burnt Ranch Rd. about 7 miles beyond the Painted Hills. Because we couldn't part with the cottage and the little guesthouse, we decided to create the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals so we could share the beauty of this area with many more travelers to this area. We have never regretted it and have made many new friends with our guests, many of them coming since years now. We now
