Beautiful View
Charming older cabin with some great history. The view of the lake from the deck is amazing. We enjoyed our coffee in the morning on the deck. We did not have time to utilize the boat or use the lake (this time), as we used the cabin more as a hub and did a lot of northern Michigan site seeing. The lake was quiet, with hardly any boats on it. I would love to try the fishing. It was so nice to meet the owner, Jeff. I wish we had more time to chat and learn more about the history of the cottage and lake.

Million Dollar View
The view off the deck is amazing. Bear Lake is absolutely beautiful and crystal clear. If you visit you must rent the pontoon that is available. It really makes the trip. Taking boat rides and fishing. The cottage is older but has so much charm. If given the chance I would buy this place and move in full time. You cannot beat this area. Local restaurant's right down the road. Jeff is very friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great stay and were thankful.

Bear Lake Cottage
Love this area due to proximity for day trips in the area, especially at this price point. While accommodations were fine for our purposes, the listing did not indicate that the cottage and the owners home share the same property/space. This may not be an issue to some guests, but for those who prefer more privacy should be aware of this. I did not know until after I booked and was contacted by Jeff that he would be next door for the duration of our stay. He did have a project going on involving a tree in the front yard, and while I am certain he would have more than accommodated us, we did not want to interfere with the work so did not grill or have a bonfire as hoped. We just adjusted our plans for the weekend. The cottage was clean and comfortable, although a deep clean (window sills/baseboards/sliding screen door fell off track) could be done. Jeff was quite friendly and offered suggestions for us, and allowed use of his beach chairs and a jug to fill at the artesian well down the road, which was kind of him. It is evident that Jeff loves this property and I appreciated his enthusiasm for his memories of his childhood. This cottage has rustic charm and is appropriately priced for the property. Thanks for your hospitality!

Perfect for Couple Getaway
We love Jeff's little place! It's quirky, antique, and cozy, but it's right on the lake in a great location. We love to fish, so we rent his pontoon every year which works for us. The bedrooms do not have doors and the only bathroom is located in the master, so it's best for a couple or family to use. Thanks Jeff for sharing your place with us!!

Long weekend getaway
This small cottage is quant and rustic but clean with lots of charm. There are not distinct bedrooms so be prepared to work out bathroom time with a larger group. The lake is beautiful and great for swimming. Unfortunately, my group couldn’t use the boat because it sits on a lift and I’ve never operated a boat lift before and was afraid I would hurt the boat or not be about to dock it back on the lift appropriately. This was a bummer but it did rain a few days so it didn’t ruin our trip. Jeff (the owner) graciously stated that if I booked again in the future- we could use the boat for free. The only recommendations I have would go get a cover for the paddle boat - it was full of water and bugs so the kids didn’t want to use it and I didn’t see life jackets so I would recommend bring your own life jackets as I’m not sure if there are any provided. The price is great, location is great. Would stay there again. Oh and read the history of the cottage - it’s very interesting. Just wish I knew where the fire truck is today! Very cool.

Wonderful week
Lovely cottage, everything we needed for a quiet week. Convenient to Manistee, hiking trails, Sleeping Bear, but equally nice to stay "home" and relax. Everything needed for self-catered meals, but plenty of good restaurant choices nearby. Great host, highly recommended!

About the host

Hosted by Jeff DuPilka

Host profile image
The cottage and surrounding property have been in the DuPilka family since 1957 when my parents, Joseph and Doris purchased it. Over the year they were able to acquire some additional lots for the property is protected from development.

I have been coming to Bear Lake since I was 5 years olds. If I had my way, I would be here all the time but, hey, a guy has to work, right. I do try to come up as many weekends during the summer season that I can and I also am up quite a lot in the winter. The area is beautiful with a fresh, clean snowfall.

Why they chose this property

I was five years old when my folks purchased the property in 1957. The original purchase consisted of 300 feet on the lake which included two cottages and a garage. The cottage you are in now and one other which we called the Bunkhouse. The bunkhouse was remodeled into the house next door in the early 1970’s.
This cottage was originally as big as the kitchen area and was actually moved here on two very large cedar logs approximately 36 feet long. The logs are still in place under the structure today.

What makes this property unique

Lake frontage, proximity to cities, both big and small in in Michigan, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Detroit, Manistee, Holland, Big Rapids, Flint. I have had quite a few renters from Indiana over the last couple of years as well as a couple of people from Florida. Bear Lake is a draw for people from all over that want to be able to unwind, relax and enjoy themselves.

Bear Lake is an all sports lake and activities on the water include, fishing, boating, skiing, swimming, jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing and just about any water activity you can think of. Lots to do in and around the water. The cottage has boat dock access. As me about pontoon and kayak rental if you have an interest in either of those activities.

Fire pit and fire wood available on the property for your enjoyment.
