New Years and Birthday!
Found a few spider webs and some places weren’t cleaned properly. We found lipstick on a few glasses but we didn’t mind washing it off ourselves. They equipped us with everything we needed and we forgot a few things but they had us covered! Super spacious super fun and we had such a blast! Definitely coming back! The home owner was also the sweetest person and checking on us multiple times!

Great place for large family with lots of kids
Cheerful house, full of character, very clean. It was well stocked with nice toiletries, a multitude of fluffy towels, and all the cooking supplies one could possibly want to cook for a large family. Ideal location to explore local parks. Tons to do.

Comfortable, roomy cabin near the breathtakingly beautiful painted hills
We had lots of comings and goings during our week-long stay, but at some points we had 6 people and 3 dogs who were all able to be happy and comfortable in this sweet cabin. The kitchen is fully stocked and the beds all good quality. Barbara was very helpful in suggesting good hikes in the area. We had a wonderful time and will definitely return!

Winter In Mitchell
Winter is a great time to visit Mitchell and the Painted Hills. We had a great time. Mitchell has good food and beer, and the Painted Hills are awesome and we largely had them to ourselves. The cottage was comfortable and ideal for our visit.

beautiful property in a magical place
We had a wonderful long weekend at the sunset cabin. The house was spacious and comfortable with lots of different areas both inside and out to hang out in. Even though it was in the upper 90s outside, the house stayed cool throughout the day even without running the A/C (though the presence of A/C was appreciated). We loved all the little artistic touches all around the property and enjoyed chatting with Barbara. She gave us excellent suggestions for things to see, places to swim and places to eat. We would love to come stay here again sometime in the near future.

A True Gem
The perfect getaway if your looking to relax and enjoy the beauty the Painted Hills and Jon Day Fossil beds. Barbara the owner was such a joy to meet. We got the pleasure of meeting her the second day we were there and the last day, although she is there everyday working the grounds but still provides a lot of privacy for her guests. She is an amazing woman who has done so much with her life and if your lucky you will get the chance to meet her. I suffer for from anxiety and get extremely homesick, but this place felt like home and I really didn’t want to leave! I miss it already! Everything was perfect from the layout of the house, cleanliness, and beautiful panoramic views. The town of Mitchell is a small western town and everyone one there is extremely personable. We will definitely be back!

This property was fantastic. It was the perfect get away for our family Thanksgiving! The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to cook a Thanksgiving dinner. The kids loved the bunks and the little details did not go unnoticed- a stuffed animal and book on each bed. They were thrilled! Thank you! Eastern Oregon is beautiful and this place was perfect.

Perfect spot for a getaway
My friends and I visited for a weekend and everyone enjoyed the cottage so much. We set up our game night downstairs and went out to Blue Basin for a quick hike. We cooked all our meals at the cottage as well. The kitchen was stalked with utensils plenty of plates and bowls, spices, microwave, toaster, teas and coffee. We were also pleasantly surprised about have extra blankets. It got chilly downstairs and everyone was able to have a cozy blanket while we were down there. Bathrooms were clean, shampoo, conditioner and soap were in all the bathrooms. Overall, very impressed with our stay and are looking forward to going back. Thank you!

Colorful Painted Hills Retreat
The property can sleep a large amount of people. We had just our family of four. Plenty of room. The location is very peaceful and the flowers everywhere very beautiful. Twice we had deer just walk by the front window. We said hello and they stopped to have a look at us. A great location for exploring the Painted Hills and all the other units of the John Day Fossil Beds. Mitchell is a very small growing ghost town and the people are so friendly. We had just a wonderful time.

About the host

Hosted by Aruna and Barbara Jacobi

Host profile image
My mother and I have created the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals in 2008 with two of our properties in order to create accommodation for the many visitors to the area which was very much needed. We lived in Seattle for many years before running a popular restaurant ( Sisters European Snacks) with my two sisters in the famous Pike Place Market for 10 years. After much traveling, we fell in love with this area and the powerful nature all around. My mother especially felt drawn to the magic of the Painted Hills. We now live on a 33 acre each about 7 miles behind the Painted Hills with a view of the John Day River. It's really out in the Boondocks here and we drive every day the 15 miles to Mitchell to take care of our guests, cottages and gardens.

Why they chose this property

The Sunset Cottage is the newest addition to the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals and buying the property was a logical move since it's right across the street from the other 2 cottages.

What makes this property unique

The house sits on a rim overlooking the town of Mitchell and a beautiful Rock formation called Bailey Rock. The sunsets are spectacular from up here and the old plum and apricot trees are charming.
The house is cool all day but there is also AC if needed.
With its two levels it can either accommodate a small family just using the upper floor or a large group with up to 18 guests using the entire house. There are 3 cozy bedrooms, 2 remodeled bathrooms (one with the original clubfoot tub) and a large kitchen with everything needed to whip up a great meal. The cottage is spacious and clean with the feel of the old country homes of the 50's. There is a laundry room with ultra modern washer and dryer too. The views over the hills give a special taste of Eastern Oregon and has perfect spots for sunrise and sunset views. The house is perfect for a special interest group wanting to hold a class, seminar, workshop or reunion. There is a little remodeled studio available for classes on the property. Ask us for details.
