About this property

Private Cabin on the Conejos River, Pet Friendly, Sleeps 5

Unwind and enjoy your vacation the way it was meant to be. For over 150 years the Conejos River has been the fisherman’s choice in Southern Colorado. Nestled in the South San Juan Wilderness of the Rio Grande National Forest, the Homestead Cabin on the Conejos offers your family a great vacation experience.

The Homestead Cabin is one of the original guest cabins on the 14 acre Conejos Ranch located along the Conejos River with approximately 1 mile of private river frontage. The rustic 2 bedroom, 1 bath cabin has a full size, well-appointed kitchen and a cozy wood stove. Under new ownership since 2016, the cabin has received new flooring, furniture, and many other upgrades for your comfort. The master bedroom has a luxurious pillow top queen bed and the second bedroom has a pillow top full size bed and twin size bunk beds. The cabin will sleep 5 comfortably.

The kitchen is fully stocked with Caphalon cookware, blender, coffee maker, electric tea kettle, a full spice cabinet, and plenty of extras.

NOTE: as of 05/21/2020, the fiber optic internet service is active!

Outside under the pines, is a gas grill, picnic table and a fire pit to enjoy cool evenings. Wood is provided however you must heed any burn ban or red flag warnings. You will receive current fire restrictions, if any, prior to arrival.

Fish the river right outside your cabin across the private park or in over 30 smaller streams and tributaries in the county that offer some remarkable fishing for Rainbow and Native Brown Trout. The season generally runs from May through October – with July, August and September being prime months for dry-fly. Licenses are requires and may be obtained at the Fox Creek Store or Conejos River Anglers.

If hunting is your preference, the Homestead Cabin on the Conejos makes a great base camp. While hunting is not allowed on the property, hunt for deer, elk, bear, and antelope all within a short 30 minute drive.

Artists and photographers, mountain bikers, hikers and backpackers can find over 180 miles of trails in the wild and rugged San Juan Mountains of Colorado that stretch from southwestern Colorado into northern New Mexico. Here the San Juan Mountains remain yet untouched by man and where the wanderer can find solitude from the crowded avenues of the city. The best backpacking in the state is here, some would argue. In the autumn, the area is popular with hunting parties looking for trophy elk. But outside of the autumn hunting season, solitude can be more readily found here for the soul who is willing to seek it out.

If trains are your passion, the historic narrow gauge Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is just down the road in Antonito, Colorado. Take the train from Antonito to Chama for an unforgettable experience. Or head north to Alamosa and catch a ride on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is the highest and longest route on standard gauge rail. Choose from a daytime ride over historic La Veta Pass with steep grades, wildlife sightings and narrated tales of railroad and mining history, a weekend train ride to a mountaintop concert, or a sunset dinner train to make your vacation truly unforgettable.

Shoppers will delight in Taos, NM a short 1 1/2 hour drive away. In the summer, rafting is also available in Taos. Don’t forget to stop at the Chili Line Depot in Tres Piedras, NM on the way for one of the best burgers around and great home-made desserts.

The Homestead Cabin on the Conejos is pet friendly. We only ask that you let your four legged family members join you on your adventures. Pets should always be on leash while outdoors and should never be left in the cabin un-attended.

The cabin is non-smoking however you are welcome to smoke outside. Please dispose of smoking materials properly and always be careful of any fire sources while visiting in the National Forest.

About the Area
The South San Juan area is special for its rugged scenery, large expanses of forest, and high altitude trails that offer a sense of remoteness difficult to find elsewhere. High ridges, pinnacles and deep canyons, carved by the headwaters of the San Juan, Conejos, and Blancos rivers characterize the geography of the wilderness. Pristine spruce, fir and ponderosa forest make the South San Juan wilderness a sanctuary for deer, elk, bear, and other wildlife that thrives unmolested by human activity. It comes as no surprise then that it was in this place that the last Colorado grizzly was shot in 1979. Biologists speculate that if any Colorado grizzlies remain, it would be in this remote wilderness.

Nearby Attractions: Guided fishing at Conejos River Anglers (you won't be disappointed) and guided horseback rides and overnights with Conejos Canyon Outfitters are currently available.

Fly fishing trip
Nice accommodations for getting away. Would be nice to have some notes to identify where trash can be taken, at night it is not easy to discover. Lighting could be better in all rooms but it is adequate. Had a great time and thanks for allowing us to stay. One other suggestion would be to have a river map that has identifiers of areas for fishermen. Thanks again.

Homestead cabin review
My wife and I stayed at the Homestead cabin for about 5 days in early October. The cabin was wonderfully inviting and was very comfortable for us. Even though the weather got chilly in the evenings, the furnace worked well to keep us warm. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed for our stay as well. The Wifi worked well and we were able to stay in-touch with our loved ones even though there was no cellphone service in the area. The cabin is within walking distance of the Conejos River so it was so relaxing to take a walk when we wanted to. We took daily drives and hikes in the nearby areas and got to see the spectacular colors of a Colorado autumn!! Even the pictures that we took could not do the fall colors justice!! We would consider coming back as we thoroughly enjoyed our visit!!

Wonderful time
The Homestead Cabin is a warm, comfortable cabin. It is definitely homey. It had everything we needed, plus, in the kitchen area. The location on the Conejos River is beautiful and relaxing. Someone really put a great deal of thought into the decor. We enjoyed being off the grid for a few days and were sad to leave. We would like to make this a yearly get away.

Cozy River Cabin
This is a wonderful, cozy river cabin! We loved staying here with our dogs. The location was great and our host was super responsive in our communications. She had the cabin well equipped with pretty much anything you would need for cooking. She also had lots of Off! for the mosquitos as well as citronella candles, which was a nice touch.

Excellent Cabin on the Conejos
I found this cabin on VRBO for my family's trip to ride and chase the Cumbres & Toltec Steam Train. The cabin was clean and well equipped. The beds were very comfortable. My husband and I spent the nights in the cabin but my three adult children and friends were there for dinner in the evenings. With the outdoor table and seating there was plenty of room for everyone. The river is gorgeous but was running too high and fast for fishing or floating. I imagine it is perfect a little later in the year. I would highly recommend this location and will likely return.

Homestead stay
Clean and comfortable, everything in order. Had entry problem because of no entry code. Very hard to get help with out cell service! Plenty of firewood but no way to split kindling. A note book with cabin info would be nice touch.

Beautiful Cabin
We had a great time and hope to be back! The area was beautiful and the cabin was the best part of our trip, it was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The stocked, open kitchen area made cooking enjoyable, the wood stove was amazing and warmed things up fast in the evening, and we felt right at home here with our dogs. Many thanks to the owner for allowing us to borrow your well-cared for, amazing cabin!

Conejos River Cabin
Everything was as advertised. Great location on lower Conejos (near Mogote Campground). Solitude, peace and private river access. The two bunkbeds were difficult for adults but the couch was perfect so nobody had to dare the height of the upper bunk. Well-equipped and nothing lacking. We enjoyed the outdoor grill and walking around the property. We arrived late and was a little difficult to locate. We will rent again!

We Know!
Kimberly - We SO enjoyed our stay for reasons that most who stay here would never understand. We enjoyed everything that you’ve done in this little house by the Conejos River! As a “two year owner” of our own rental property in Red River, we know personally the expense and the heart that goes into everything you’ve done to improve this great place. From the flooring to the stocked kitchen to the bear theme, we loved and appreciated all of it. Being close to the river surrounded by trees was so relaxing!

Wonderful stay!
We so enjoyed our stay! Such a cute cabin! We used to stay in Big Spruce next door years ago when Shorty owned the place…my in laws found it over 20 years ago, so it was a nice “de-ja-vu” being back to see how it’s changed since then! Highly recommend The Homestead and hope to be back!.:)

Cute Rustic Cabin
Rustic, cute, well-equipped cabin in a fantastic location. Bring your own drinking/cooking water (owner explains this possible need in check-in materials) and also a few mousetraps might be needed. These are the only reasons we did not give a five star rating.

It really is a special place
We spent 5 nights there in June and had a wonderful time. The area has lot of outdoor activities. We hiked and fished and even ate supper in Platuro. Most of the time we were gone all day and then came back for supper. The kitchen is very well stocked and it was easy to cook on the gas grill. It is a very comfortable cabin and we spent many nights reading. The river is a short walk and is beautiful. I would very much like to stay there again and we have recommended the cabin to our friends.

Since my first visit to the area in 1968, I've loved this hidden corner of Colorado! I love to fish, ride, and just explore the area.

Why they chose this property

The Homestead Cabin is just a few miles from where I spent my most memorable summers growing up, the Rainbow Trout Lodge (now Rainbow Trout Ranch). This is where I fell in love with Colorado, which led me to a love of the mountains and the outdoors. In the summer of 2015, I returned to Rainbow Trout Ranch with my son (who had only heard stories but had never been) and again fell in love with the area. There is truly no where else like this on earth!

What makes this property unique

A true remote getaway! You will only have the sound of the river, a crackling fire and your friends and family. This is a chance to disconnect and slow down. On rainy afternoons, there is a great library along with games and puzzles for all ages to enjoy.

The Homestead Cabin is located on the 14 acre Conejos River Ranch so there is plenty of room to explore. Hiking and biking trails are right outside your door.
