About this property

Perfect for Couples Or Families Up To 4 In Lovely Two Story Log Home

This is a comfortable log cabin with great attention to detail set on our cattle ranch in the Melville area where our families have lived for generations. Otter Creek is a small, beautiful stream and is just steps away from the back door. There are miles of hiking, bird watching and photographic opportunities; scenic and wildlife views surround you. This is for the nature lover, those who love the outdoors and all it offers. We have a private reservoir a short walk from the cabin, and with prior arrangements (check with Annie upon arrival for available days) you are welcome to use our kayaks and paddleboards to enjoy the water. There is also an opportunity for horseback riding for an additional fee mid-June to mid-Sept at the nearby Sweet Grass Ranch.

The space

The hand-built cabin has a living room with lovely views of the Crazy Mountains, comfortable stuffed hickory chairs and sofa, wagon wheel lights. The dining area has a hickory table which seats 6 easily by a picture window or there is a back deck for eating where you can listen to Otter Creek and watch one of our glorious sunsets as you watch deer, fox and birds enjoy the evening. The kitchen has a full refrigerator with freezer section, microwave, toaster, sink, dishes, utensils and cups and glasses. The stove has 4 burners and an oven. There are cooking utensils, pans, etc., in the cupboards as well as some cooking essentials. There is also a wood burning stove in the living room for that unbeatable wood heat.
Through a hallway is the bathroom with tub and shower and another mountain view. The bedroom downstairs has a queen bed, cozy comforter, bedside lights for reading and an overhead light, dresser and closet. This window looks out on the lawn and Bill and Shelly’s log home.
Up the stairs is a half loft with two twin beds, oak dressers, chairs and a spotting scope with a view that goes for miles. There is a ceiling fan in the living room which circulates the propane heat. All the rooms are well-appointed with Indian rugs, pictures, plenty of lights and books.

Guest access
There is hiking for miles on the ranch, which runs all the way up to the base of the Crazies. Please check with Rocco or Annie upon arrival, and we will point you in the right direction and answer any questions. Hiking recommendations may vary based on if you have dogs with you and where our cattle are at the time of your stay. We do not allow you to drive anywhere on the ranch other than to the cabin.

Other things to note:
We do ask a pet fee of $25. Pets must be kept on a leash anywhere around the ranch buildings and livestock. If you are hiking well away from the ranch buildings and there is no livestock in the area, you are welcome to let your pet off the leash, but please be aware that we do have lots of wildlife so a good recall on your pet is a must. Well behaved pets are allowed in the cabin, but not on the furniture or beds. We have a new, sturdy kennel set up outside the cabin for your use; if you are going to be gone for the day and wish to leave your pet at the ranch we ask that you use the kennel and not leave them unattended in the cabin.
We do have four male boarder collie ranch dogs. Our dogs are kenneled unless we are outside with them (these are working dogs and will go straight to livestock) but they go with us everywhere around the ranch as we work, so you may come into contact with them, especially if we are working in the shop. They are friendly dogs but this is their home and they may react to new dogs.
We love dogs and understand that you would want to bring yours. But first and foremost, we are a working cattle ranch and our dogs are a big part that. If you are unsure if this is the right situation for you and your pet, please check with us.

The Otter Creek Cabin provides the perfect opportunity to reconnect with family and enjoy the simple pleasures as there is no television. We do have WiFi.

We ask that you do not smoke in the cabin.

Property is not what is stated in the description.
This property is not what it says it is in the listing. IT IS SO MUCH BETTER! There is no way I’ll be able to address everything in this review, just know that this place is Heaven on Earth! First, the host. Annie was INCREDIBLE! Not only did I receive communication soon after booking to welcome my family, but even the week before Annie reached out to me and provided me with EVERYTHING I needed to get there. She remained just as helpful and welcoming throughout the entire stay. Second, the property. The pictures don’t do this place justice. The property is very secluded, but Annie provided excellent directions that had us pull right up to the front door. The cabin is a work of art, and the story behind it makes it such a treasure. There is literally nothing between you and the mountains except grassy fields (you can almost always see deer out grazing). The cabin is set in the most perfect angle so you can sit on the back porch and watch the sun set behind the mountains and there is nothing to obstruct the view. We couldn’t keep our kids out of the creek that runs right behind the cabin! Third, the activities. Annie set us up to have the coolest horseback riding experience at their guest ranch. Along with exploring the land, Annie allowed us full access to the reservoir and kayaks there at the ranch. Literally walking distance from the cabin! This was the most unforgettable vacation! I cannot thank this family enough for sharing their piece of paradise with us. ❤️

Great Views, Great House, Great Hosts
My wife and I stayed here for 4 days. The house sits on a very large ranch at the base of the Crazies. We loved sitting on the back deck on the afternoon spotting wildlife - deer, elk, ducks, and a fox. Then at night we sat around the Solo fire pit. The house was outfitted with everything we needed and some things that you would not expect a house to have. There is no TV but we did not care. We caught small brookies in the creek that runs right by the house. Even though, the owners live on the property, the house feels very private. We hiked 5 miles withouteven leaving the property. Annie and her husband were great hosts and would touch base to make everything was going well. I would consider the location more remote than others you might consider. It is about 20 miles from the nearest small town - Big Timber - which was just fine with us. We loved this property.

Nice quiet place to stay. Lots of wildlife to see. Place was well taken care of. It’s about 25 minutes to nearest town which is not that big. Overall we’d come back we like the wildlife and the peacefulness.

Montana at its finest
This was my first experience staying in the great state of Montana, and this hidden gem of a cabin blew us away. It’s exactly what I had pictured a true Montana view to be. The hosts have thought of everything for a relaxing time. The back porch is a must for sunrises, sunsets and star gazing. We will definitely be back!

A good, quiet spot
We enjoyed our stay at the Otter Creek Cabin, a very cozy, comfortable place. Temps were in the 90s but the cabin stayed cool. It is well-furnished and roomy. The surroundings are remarkable, truly big sky country. So nice to see areas that are not sub-divided and teeming with traffic. Pleasant hiking in the Crazies and an enjoyable day on Sweetgrass Creek.

Dog owners beware!
We were so excited to find this listing to stay with our two dogs. However when we arrived we found a welcome letter warning us of the “four TERRITORIAL and AGGRESSIVE dogs” (as stated by the owners) that live on and have free run of the property. And that it was our responsibility to keep our dogs from them. They insisted that we utilize a small enclosure in backyard that any dog could easily get through. We stayed the first night since we had gotten in quite late but left first thing in the morning. We were reimbursed only partially for the nights we did not stay (because of the other dogs), and the owners did not reimburse us for the taxes on the nights we did not stay. If you have a dog, you can’t feel comfortable that the other dogs may attack. Arrive during the day as the property is in the country and owners left no lights on for our late arrival. If we had known in advance about the third house on the property with four dogs, we would not have booked. There was no mention of this in the description.

If this had not been our first trip to Montana and wanted to see as much of the state as possible we would have spent our entire week on the property without leaving. It is truly paradise on earth for those people that enjoy peace, quiet, escape, serenity, then this is the place.

Quiet getaway
It was strange that we didn’t have any communication with the property manager/owner after our booking as it specifically asks us to notify them about our stay and arrival. Once we got settled in the cabin was great and our stay was wonderful. Quiet and just what we needed for a weekend to rejuvenate.

Fun cabin with great views!
This is a fun cabin with great views looking out over the Crazy Mountains. We enjoyed the back porch watching sunsets over the mountains. This cabin worked really well for us and our infant daughter. Hiking is available right on the property, and there are a number of drives in the mountains within an hour of the property. We did not make it to the reservoir, which is about forty minutes from the cabin, but enjoyed the creek right out the back of the cabin.

Best Place to Get Away From it All!
We so enjoyed our stay at the cabin! Everything was ready for our arrival and spotlessly clean. The photos do not do it justice! We hiked the area around the cabin, went to the reservoir, fished the creeks and took a trail ride up at the big ranch. We most enjoyed the peace and quiet. Shelly and Bill were so welcoming and all of our communication was easy. We highly recommend this property and hope to return!

We absolutely loved our time at the Big Timber cabin - very clean, open, beautiful views from the back porch. We had a great time grilling, and playing in the reservoir with our chocolate lab. The surrounding town was cute and had an awesome brewery. Local golf course was also nice to play.
