Perfect Property
From initial inquiries to check-out, everything was handled with efficiency and attention to detail. We stayed 11 days and did not want to leave. Our party of 4 adults, 1 small child and 1 toddler had so much space. The views and location are amazing. The cleanliness and facilities are fantastic. It was as if the owners knew what we needed even before we did; from the bike lock, toiletries, shopping bags, matches (for our little boys' 2nd birthday candles), drawing pads and books for the little kids and the combination pool/air hockey/ping pong table for the big kids. Everyone loved the deck, row boat and BBQ. This property far exceeded our expectations. Hope to return in the near future as it is an ideal base to visit family and explore South Wales.

Perfect place to stay
The first impressions was wow how immaculately clean the house was. Every surface was gleaming ! There were so many extra little touches just made the stay so special. The facilities are amazing. So much to keep everyone entertained from canoes, bicycles, pool, air hockey, table tennis, jigsaw puzzles, books and Netflix. No chance of anyone say they are bored ! Everything is provided for you so don't worry about packing things like tea towels, kitchen roll and washing powder like you do for most holiday lets. The communication from the owner was first rate. Any queries or questions were answered very quickly before and during our stay. At the end of each holiday we always ask the family, would they stay there again - and this was an immediate 100% YES.

Impeccable!
My family and I just loved our stay at Caithness. As a homebase to explore all that south Wales has to offer, it was perfect. We were able to do without a car by walking to the nearby rail station, and made use of the bikes to get to the Tesco and shops in Pontypool. The amenities in the house are second to none. Alex has put so much thought and care into every little detail. It was probably the most well appointed holiday home I’ve stayed in. The shower in the master bath was a dream! The beds comfortable, with a stunning view. I’ll not soon forget watching the sun rise from bed in that gorgeous room. Thank you, Alex for being such a tremendous host and helping us have such a great family vacation. :) Jane

Family 70th birthday celebrations
We had a really lovely stay at this property. It was in the perfect location for exploring various places in Wales and the property had more than we needed for three generations of family. Alex was brilliant with communication before our stay and the added touch of a card and gift on arrival for my mums special birthday was amazing, so kind and thoughtful. We will definitely be recommending the property to our friends.

Fabulous Home in the Countryside
Alex has created a fabulous home equipped with everything you could want for a stay in the Welsh countryside. Modern well designed house with great furnishings. We loved using the games room, relaxing in the separate living room, entertaining at the large kitchen table, bbq'ing on the spacious well furnished deck, and relaxing in the perfectly appointed bedrooms. Each morning we enjoyed either walking, paddling, or riding the canal with the provided bikes and boats. With a Tesco 5 minutes drive away, neighborhood pubs close by, gorgeous countryside all around, and easy access to the motorways it was the ideal place to base ourselves for our family visits around Wales. Thanks so much Alex for creating and sharing such a lovely space.

Beautifully kept property
We had a lovely long weekend at Caithness. Everything was as expected, the property is newly completely renovated, modern and clean & tidy, which encourages you to keep it clean. We were nine people, and there was plenty of room for everyone. A few went out for local walks/hikes, and said they were very enjoyable. The bathrooms are lovely and clean, showers excellent. The view from the master bedroom is stunning. N.

Best of all four places we stayed in on this trip
We promised our daughter a trip to Europe for her graduation from college, since she didn’t get to see anything but pubs when she spent a summer at Oxford with her schoolmates. After visiting Paris and London we headed here to see where according to Ancestry.com says 98% of my ancestors came from (and then migrated to Welsh Hills, Ohio…funny name for a bunch of Welch to settle). Of all the places we stayed on our trip, everyone voted this one the best. It was a beautiful place with a porch overlooking a landscaped yard stretching down to the canal. Six bedrooms and we only needed two and we didn’t need share bathrooms with our 20 year old daughter! I have to admit the driveway was a bit of a challenge for us folks from across the pond that drive on the correct side of the road. We were having enough problems making turns into the correct lanes and going around the roundabouts clockwise instead of counterclockwise (anticlockwise). So we parked on the street, which was only another five feet or so away, so it posed no problems. Up until now we’d been staying in cities and the silence at night was astounding, as were the sounds of the birds in the morning. I can’t remember ever hearing and seeing so many song birds in my life.

Walk through a small cut way opposite the house turn right to get to the other side of the canal for the tow path . Recommend drive out to Brecon Beacons on small road fantastic views and go on the Brecon railway steam train go in the morning and walk halfway back down get a cup of tea then catch the train back down . Great cheap day out. We will come back another time to be able to sit out on the lovely balcony.

Magnificent House, Views, Space and Facilities.
My family of 6 adults and 4 children, ages from 1 to 63, spent a wonderful few days at Caithness. The house, inside and out, is even better than the pictures. Everything you need is provided, the quality of linen, towels, furniture and fittings is excellent. Our first full day, there was so much to do, no-one except the Oldies went out, and we only went to the very handy supermarket for provisions. The games room was a huge success for adults and children, the pool table / air hockey being the favourites. The rowing boat and fishing from the garden, were first experiences for my Grandchildren and they had lots of fun. We all had a wonderful time and excursions were made to Cardiff, Newport and Tredeger House.

Wonderful holiday home for all the family.
A beautiful house in lovely grounds which was clean and tidy on arrival with complimentary tea and coffee provided. Instructions regarding various equipment etc was very clear.Communication with the owners was great. We were a mixed family group and all catered for from 5mths upwards. Plenty of airy bedrooms with generous sized beds; and cots and high chairs for the little ones. Great internal entertainment with a well equipped games room and plenty of TV's around the house; good wifi. Externally the bottom of the garden is bordered by the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal - we used the treasure trove of kayaks and rowing boat kept in the dry undercroft with mountain bikes. A wonderful place to be based at for a wedding weekend in South Wales. Thank you.

Brilliantly appointed, comfortable, warm home with great views over the canal and rolling fields
Well equipped and very welcoming house, warm, and really comfortable accommodation. Fantastic games/cinema room was a real bonus! It was a Christmas stay so too cold for use of kayaks, but the provision of bikes and boats was thoughtful, and the bikes were used along the canal path once or twice! Thoughtful owners made the stay very easy (and great Christmas lights and decorations thank you!), plenty of information, all well organised and to hand. Bedrooms all comfortable, and excellent bathroom facilities including a spacious walk-in wet room shower. Plenty of TVs provided in rooms too. A really pleasant, enjoyable stay.

Amazing house with beautiful views!
We were a party of 12 family members aged from 9 months to mid fifties Absolutely everything you could wish for was provided, from the smallest thing such as enough cutlery/plates etc, to the boat/bikes and kayaks. All of the beds were wonderfully comfortable (my eldest daughter actually found the tag on her mattress, so she could look it up in order to buy one!) The house was spotless when we arrived and directions and access to the house instructions were really helpful. We found the information book detailing shops, restaurants and takeaway places available nearby really handy. We had a lovely long walk along the canal, and found a nice local park and swimming pool nearby, but probably didn’t do enough ‘exploring’ as we were all so relaxed! However, every member of our party wants to return, so we’ll save that for next time! This property is a real gem, and easily accommodates large groups very very comfortably-we will definitely be booking again in the future.

Excellent property and location
Just back from our Easter break here where 3 generations of our family had a great time. The house is immaculate and ideally situated for lots of nearby attractions. Within the house itself everything was thought of, the eldest loved the pool table and Netflix. The youngest just enjoyed all the space to run around in and everyone enjoyed the views and the general homely feel. Would love to visit again and an extra thanks from everyone for all the Easter treats 😀

About the host

Hosted by Caithness Holiday Home

Host profile image
A family run business, based in South Wales. 'Caithness' has been in the family since 1959 when it was built. Named as such as a result of Scottish heritage. In 2014 - as a family - we set out to extend and completely renovate the building to transform it into a spacious, modern, and comfortable self catering holiday home.

Why they chose this property

We put a lot of hard work into transforming the property, to make it truly feel like a home from home for our guests. We have a photo book documenting our renovation journey, which is available for guests to look through when staying at the house.

The exterior has been updated with fresh, bright contrasting paintwork. What was originally a sloping, unused front garden, is now an elevated parking area with drive-in drive- out functionality, with steps down to the front door. At the rear a 30 metre squared balcony has been constructed with bi-folding doors opening out from the dining room and lounge. There is a gas BBQ and rattan furniture available to use during the summer months, to allow you to dine outside and enjoy the view while relaxing on the balcony. The house sleeps up to 10 people and guests have full use of the entire house during their stay. It has a contemporary feel throughout, incorporating a distinctive purple theme. There are 6 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. In addition to this, there's a spacious kitchen diner, a cosy lounge, quiet study, functional utility room and a fully equipped games room including a 3-in-1 revolving games table and cinema projector. The house is situated along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal, boasting beautiful views from the garden of barges passing by, waterway wildlife and the green fields and hills beyond!

What makes this property unique

Guests are welcome to use our range of boats and bikes while staying at the house. We provide life jackets and helmets in a range of sizes.

There's also fishing equipment available and the canal is well stocked with bream, pike, roach, dace, chub, perch and eel.

Free Netflix access is also available during your stay.
