The Tissington cycle trail runs within a mile of Dovedale.
Dovedale is one of the finest examples of a limestone and ash woodland habitat to be found in Europe. What makes the Dovedale landscape truly special is the incredible relationship which sees grassland changing into scrub/woodland and vise versa, creating a rare semi-natural and ancient ash woodland containing remnant true ancient woodland around the crags.

You will see the rare and beautiful wild flower Jacob's Ladder, when walking through Dovedale where there is significant amounts of the wild flower to be found there. Please remember that they look more beautiful covering the landscape than in your pocket.
Milldale is a quaint English Hamlet today, used to be a bustling and busy hamlet with a Camomile mill that closed in the late 1870’s. The remaining mill buildings have now been converted into our information barn. The ancient packhorse bridge is the most famous of all in the Peak District. It is known as the Aviator’s Bridge, and was made famous in the English classic ‘The Compleat Angler’ by Izaak Walton. .

Milldale, is the first welcoming view and entrance to Dovedale looking down the wooded ravine, cross over Aviators Bridge to walk down through Dovedale to the stepping stones or north along the quieter stretches of Dovedale. All along the route watch out for dippers, kingfisher or even herons who will be looking for food in the clear waters of the River Dove.

The steppng stones which join the two banks of the River Dove at the Southern end of Dovedale, were originally built by the Victorians due to the ever increasing popularity of the area, to find an easy way to cross the river. They have become one of the most iconic features of Dovedale in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
Fun for adults and children alike, hop from one stone to the next to continue exploring the rest of Dovedale. A little further up from stepping stones are a flight of steps, that were built during the Second World War by Italian prisoners of war, they lead to Lover’s Leap. Climbing this hill is the only way to continue your journey north through Dovedale.

When the river is low the stepping stones can easily be crossed, however after heavy rainfall the stepping stones become difficult to cross. Steep slopes and undulating terrain make this area difficult for visitors with disabilities; however they are constantly upgrading accessibility to ensure that more visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of Dovedale. Accessible parking can be found at Stepping-Stones end of Dovedale with a portable snack bar to have a welcoming hot/cold drink.
In Milldale, Polly's Cafe is right next to the river and just down the road from Bankside Cottage. Sandwiches, hot and cold drinks and Ice Creams, perfect for stocking up before a long walk or a refreshing snack after a long day exploring, sit and relax by the river.

Perfect cottage in a lovely & quiet scenery
We had a perfect stay in the Bankside cottage. Milldale is very small (7 houses?), beautiful and quiet place, especially in the evening when daytrippers have left. The cottage has everything you need. Good beds, decent seating in living room, lots of kitchen equipment, washing / drying machine etc. The Master bedroom is very spacious with a good bed. The rest of the sleeping rooms are doable but much smaller. Bathroom is very spacious and shower and bath have good waterflow. The Wifi was also decent enough to make good phone calls over Whatsapp and to surf with multiple persons at the same time. Please mind that persons taller then say 180 cm will need to bend over a bit when moving from room to room downstairs, but that is not really a problem. It is good to know (please check Google maps!) that there is a daytrippers parking lot 50m from the house. This is used by people walking the Dovedale from the Milldale side. Traffic can start around 7-8 am growing to like 5 cars per hour in the morning and the same in afternoon/evening and people will not drive to slow (40-50km/h; please mind your kids!!!). You will hear this in the house, but you will get used to it. NB: we had some initial problems getting into the house due to miscommunications on the key code. Next to that the fire-alarm went off twice in the initial night around 1:30 and 5 am which was a bit nasty. Both issues were however dealt with promptly and satisfactory.

Wonderful cottage within easy reach of hiking and attractions
Really enjoyed the stay in the cottage and the countryside nearby. Vicki was a very thoughtful host from making the booking until checkout, including providing recommendations of things to do. The cottage is well appointed, especially the kitchen and bathroom, but I would note that the double bed is not very long and that the bunk beds are not suitable for adults.

Bank side cottage
A lovely cottage in a super direction for walking. The cottage itself was roomy enough for the three of us plus 2 spaniels and was very well equipped. We had a problem with the key code but the host sorted this quickly.

Lovely cottage in a great location for walks
We recently enjoyed a short but very comfortable stay in Bankside Cottage. The owners have obviously put a lot of thought into making sure guests have all they need. The welcome basket of goodies was a lovely touch. We would definitely visit again 👌

Lovely location for our family stay
Overall this was a lovely place to stay. Vicki, the owner was responsive and very accommodating. Dog friendly (only allowed downstairs) decent facilities. Only criticisms were that the beds were uncomfortable and could do with decent mattresses and we found broken glass under the coffee table when we arrived. Other than this, it was perfect. I would recommend and certainly stay again

Cosy, rural cottage.
What a beautiful, cosy wee cottage set on the edge of the picturesque hamlet of Milldale. Tastefully & comfortably decorated, a comfortable home where it is easy to relax after a day of visiting or walking (helped along with the complementary bottle of wine🍷). There was a welcome pack of essentials, nice touch. Lovely towels & soft bed linen (master bed is one of the biggest I’ve ever slept in) Cottage has plenty books & games plus all mod cons, WiFi, TV, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, etc should you need them. Mobile signal can be erratic (but you’re on holiday!). Vicki (owner), was in contact before our arrival with all information necessary. We live in a place where we do not need to lock the front door so having locks & padlocks on doors/cupboards/etc was a bit un-nerving but a sad & understandable sign of the times.

Wonderful relaxing break
Along with my wife, children and Springer spaniel we had a wonderful relaxing break around Easter in this idyllic cottage. The surrounding area is stunning with plenty of walks and nothing was better after a long day than sitting in front of an open fire in the cottage. We will definitely be returning.

Great place to rest and recharge!
We are three friends who often go on trips together. We loved staying here because we had our own rooms, with very comfortable beds (but be aware that the bunkbeds are small - the owner has stated this). We had everything we needed in the cottage and loved having our breakfast and evening drinks in the garden. The cottage is very quiet, but in a great place to walk along the river to Dovedale. There were lots of walkers who passed by the cottage. The village is lovely. We enjoyed food in a local restaurant at Alstonefield (The George) and liked that we were close to Ashbourne too. We had everything we needed in the cottage and found it to be a great place from which to explore the area. We will definitely be back!

A beautiful cottage in the Peak District National Park
We stayed in this delightful cottage for 3 nights during the Easter break with our 3 children (17, 13 and 11). The cottage itself is extremely well equipped with kitchen utensils, towels, blankets, a BBQ and even a couple of bikes should you feel adventurous. The location is perfect - not too far to the larger towns but quiet enough to feel as though you are hidden away. We had a couple of days in Alton Towers and visited Poole Cavern in Buxton which was great and had a couple of lovely walks. The cottage itself is homely and, whilst the rooms are fairly small (which you would expect in a cottage) it worked really well for us.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with this beautiful cottage when we were walking around the area, we have enjoyed making it the lovely home it is today and enjoy visiting regularly.
