During the winter months, October thru March, it's an excellent location to whale watch! With your morning cup of Kona coffee, enjoy a beautiful sunrise on the front lanai. A private lanai off the master bedroom looks over a beautifully landscaped tropical garden that's home to a variety orchids, palms and plumeria trees. The space includes a large cabana. Great for relaxing with family and friends!

Offering internet access and t.v., you'll feel right at home. The kitchen is fully equipped for all your culinary and entertaining needs. A large granite counter provides extra space for entertaining and seating. A beautiful mango wood dining room table seats eight. French doors open onto the large, ocean facing lanai.

The master bedroom includes a king size bed, large closet, and nicely appointed private bath and vanity. The second bedroom hosts a queen size bed and closet. Located in the semi-private den is a full size bed and built-in desk. This den can be used as a third bedroom. This house can sleep up to six comfortably!

With a short drive to the quaint old village of Pahoa, you'll find a local supermarket, gas stations, bookstore, cafe, drugstores, gift shops, surf shop, Post Office and a handful of excellent restaurants; Mexican, Thai, Italian and local fare.

Conveniently located, many sights can be found within a hour's drive. At Volcano National Park you'll be able to see the volcano put on a show for you. At Issac Hale Park aka Pohiki, sink your feet into one of Hawaii's newest black sand beaches. Be adventurous and hike the Puna Trail which leads to a beautiful, seldom-visited sandy beach or visit one of our many botanical gardens in this area. See why this island is nicknamed the "Orchid Island"!

Great views and easy booking
House is very cute and has amazing views of the ocean across the street. Well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay and well out of the way for a quiet and relaxing get away. Not a lot of circulation in the bedrooms leading to warm nights with no ac, but there are plenty of fans in the house to help.

Great location, Great Owner
After an initial glitch (which was handled immediately by the owner), we had a terrific time at this property. We are lucky enough to be on the Big Island 2-3x per year, and frequently rent through VRBO. This unit is in the top-2 that we have stayed at. Highly recommend this location and Richard. His communication and responsiveness are unmatched.

Spacious house and peaceful location
I truly enjoyed staying in Richard's house. It is spacious, clean and has everything I might need thoughtfully provided. Inside the house during the evening I can hear ocean waves sounds and birds chirping, very relaxing. I enjoy reading a book at the porch facing the ocean. In the morning I went for a jog toward the south along the sea side, there was a beautiful tropical jungle. And then I drove a bit south along the scenic jungle road I got to a volcanic site, I could feel the heat from below still. I saw Richard when I check out, he is super nice and friendly. I would like to make a note, at the end I enjoyed my stay so much that I was considering to rent a house like this for a few month during this COVID-19 time and everyone work from home or kids join online course from home. Yet, this location is not for you to work from home, the wifi here is slow and has limited band, my cell phone has unlimited data but the reception here is sparse and when I am lucky at a corner I only have one bar. The advantage of limited connection is that I could forget the outside crisis of the COVID19, and truly enjoy a book and the beautiful tropical jungle and the sound of nature. I would highly recommend this house and I hope I will come back some day.

Relaxing to the sound of the ocean near the doorstep
Very pleasant rental across the street from the ocean provides a very relaxing view from the front lanai without getting ocean spray when the ocean is kicked up. The location is very quite, besides the ocean and breeze, with good walking opportunities available in the neighborhood, even an open-space park a couple of blocks away. The house came with everything needed for a convenient stay. The owner was very communicative and friendly, even sending us off with a nice gift. A very personal touch and location we will recommend to friends coming to the area.

Idyllic laid-back ocean view rental nestled in a residential neighborhood
Richard’s home was perfect as our home base for an island vacation. Check-in and check-out was easy and smooth. The home was just as described but maybe even more beautiful than expected. We felt more at home than if we had stayed at a hotel or resort. The amenities of home: full kitchen, two bedrooms, wrap-around lanai, parking for two cars and on-site laundry. We were located ten minutes by car from a cute little town and 30 minutes from Hilo. The community was sleepy at night and active during the day. Thank you Richard, we hope to visit again soon!

We had a very wet visit
This house is close to the shore line which allows for a lot of humidity. Lots of fans in this house. Also louvre windows allowing for breeze coming through the house cooling it. Being so close to the shoreline also means getting a lot of ocean spray, which creates filmy windows slightly obscuring the amazing ocean view. Our stay was from Jan 4 - 11. We had rain showers every day. The front lanai was pummeled with wind and rain. The moisture inside the house was impressive. The tile floors got slippery with condensation. Our reason for choosing this house was to experience the wet side of the island in January. We decided that Puna is a bit wet for our tastes. If we had stayed in a house that was back up off the shoreline a distance we think it would have made a difference inside the house (I’m sure); but those rain showers just kept coming down ... That said Pahoa is a most beautiful area with lots of jungle, friendly folks and amazing vistas. Visiting the sites of the most recent lava flow was so interesting. We did have occasion to reach out to Richard. He was most pleasant, answered the phone on the first call and got us what we needed immediately(WiFi access).

Great location/view
I like the location of this property because it's not a busy, touristy area. The landscaping is beautiful, and the view from the lanai is wonderful. It was hard sometimes to leave the house because we couldn't stop looking at the ocean across the street. Rich, the owner, is the nicest man you will ever meet in your life. He is so knowledgeable about the area and the island and is just a super nice person. There are three ceiling fans in the main living area and one in each of the bedrooms, plus there are big floor fans in the bedrooms and one in the living area. The beds and pillows were comfy. There is a full-size kitchen but only an apartment-size fridge, which is kinda small. The master shower head didn't work while we were there. The electrical outlets in both bathrooms didn't work but Rich came over two days later and fixed those. The bath towels were nice and plush. I rated the cleanliness a 4 but that was generous. Rich is having problems getting someone to do a good job of cleaning. The kitchen drawers weren't very clean and had peeling contact paper and were disorganized. The inside of the kitchen cabinets on either side of the stove hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. Spices and herbs and crumbs covered the bottom of those two cabinets. The outside of the microwave was a smeary, greasy- looking mess. The drawers in the master bath vanity hadn't been cleaned and had hair and stuff in them. The cabinet under the master bath sink was quite nasty. I couldn't use any of that space. There was a blow dryer in the linen cabinet by the master shower and it worked well. I had expected to see geckos in the house but in the 10 days we were there, we saw only one in the house and a few on the lanai. Oh, and beware of the coqui frogs. You never see them but they are noisy little things in the evening. They almost sound like a bird chirping but it's every 2 seconds pretty much nonstop. There are no streetlights and it is very dark at night. We missed certain streets a few times at night because we couldn't see them. Ha! The closest store/restaurant is 6 miles away. Malama Market is handy but VERY expensive. There is a Walmart near the Hilo airport with very reasonable prices. Pele's Kitchen is a breakfast restaurant in the little downtown area of Pahoa and is really awesome. And Kaleo's was great for dinner. If I visit the Big Island again, I can't imagine staying anywhere but Rich's place.

Fantastic Rental w/Lovely Ocean View!!
This property had all the comforts of home, minus AC, but the 3 big floor fans and all the ceiling fans kept things comfy enough!! Rich is a wonderful, responsive host! He brought us fresh island bananas (I'm ruined for store bought bananas when we get home!!!), Papiya and limes.... delicious!!! The house was a perfect base for day trips around the entire island!! Volcanoes National Park, Kohala Coast Adventure with Blue Hawaii Helicopter tours, driving to Kona over Saddle Road, the Hawaiian Tropical Botanical Gardens, Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls!! The big island has soooo much to see and do..... you're gonna love it!!!! If you rent this house (and I recommend you do!) Don't miss having breakfast in Pahoa at Pele's Kitchen! Incredible Eggs Benedict with house made English muffins!! And grab some Ono or Ahi fish and chips at Pahoa Fresh Fish (at the roundabout strip mall)....you will not be disappointed one bit!!!! Rich, thanks so much for your lovely, lovely home and hospitality!! Mahalo!! Kris & Allan Yates (Indiana)

Ocean front property!!!!!
I had a wonderful experience with Richard and his home. Rich felt more like a friend than someone you're just doing business with. Mahalo . I gave a three star on cleanliness only because Rich was being taken advantage of by the cleaning crew by cutting corners. He is now aware. If you are looking for peace and tranquility, in Jurassic park like setting, this is for you. I know I will be back.

Beautiful house in a quiet neighborhood
We loved the place, it had a lot of space for the 4 of us, peaceful at all times, the only sound is the waves breaking on the shore and the coqui frogs at night, but neither of them were too loud and it was actually quite relaxing. The view to the shore from the lanai was great, you could wake up early in the morning, grab a cup of coffee and simply watch the sea! The many installed fans were useful to ease the midsummer heat. We definitely recommend the place, also for families. Richard is also a very friendly host and we had a nice chat, mahalo for everything!

Tranquil paradise...
The view from the front porch was one of the reasons we chose this location and it was perfect. We spent every morning and evening on the porch listening to the sounds of the crashing waves, the local birds and coqui frogs. It was a vacation for your eyes and ears with the breeze making it so very comfortable. The stars at night we’re amazing. Minimal ground light makes them so visible. The accommodations were perfect for 2 couples with everyone having plenty of space. Richard Marston was a great host making sure our arrival went smoothly and checked in with us during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. He also shared some places to visit that definitely enhanced our visit like the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens and Mr. Roberts Wednesday Night Market and Festival. Both were unique experiences that offered only things found locally. If you are looking for a place that offers authentic, peaceful serene Hawaii than this is the place for you!

Not quite what we expected as maintenance is needed...all depends on your expectations./standards
Some aspects of house are great but concerns we told Richard had excuse for not being done. Loved: the Ocean View from front lanai across st., too bad 3-dead coconut palm trees block it (yard man is off island). Plenty hot water/good water pressure showers, quality thick towels but master bathroom's dark & rug was filthy. Useless tower fan was clogged dirt & air wouldn’t blow thrr til I cleaned it. Hall bathroom large but you had to enter shower over toilet, glass shower doors maybe put in backwards? Toilet had to be jiggled/pulled up to stop it from running constantly, parts under sink but not installed? Kitchen; nice set of matching good dishes & glasses but few kitchen utensils & seasonings, 1 oven mitt, no baggies or foil provided, refrigerator dirty & needed to be wiped out, again blamed on maid but I cleaned before use. Nothing in frig, usually have mustard, ketchup or mayo & only 1 ice cube tray. Kitchen/living area is good sized but you can’t open windows on half of house which is nice for view but limits airflow (trades were missing most of week). Couch & chairs are showing their age & need new foam to make comfortable. TV only in front room & has basic channels. But WiFi use Limited Usage & Slowness would be a problem for most who want to access web for online searches. We couldn’t both be on web at same time because SLOWed like 20 years ago! Beds were comfortable & bedding fine but with only ceiling fan on it was Hot in rooms. Spoke to Richard about heat 1st night said leave doors & windows open. I ask don’t you get Blister Beetles here? He said No but when pressed agreed Yes if you turn on lights or TV. I want some light & do not want to have to close up doors (no screens) lose breeze to avoid blister beetles drawn in (looks like lightening bug) that excretes an acid when touched so need to avoid them landing on you as get huge painful blister immediately! Biggest complaint was maintenance issues like no railings on side porch unsafe, roaches (not big flying kind) infestation, active termites eating house foundation, in walls. When pointing out where I cleaned up dead bugs along wall, He said No that’s termite sawdust but my eyes saw bugs & sawdust. Wood lanai was covered over with cheap tile but its deteriorating under sun/sea salt or was only meant to be used inside? Richard is unable to keep up with all the work that needs to be done to bring this house back to its prior glory & make it a home I would rent again…

A Hale With A View
What can I say? Koholā Hale is amazing, relaxing, and we couldn't ask for anything more. Let's start with the view. A door opens to the lanai and you can hear the waves crashing. The sun comes through and the view is framed by coconut trees. The house is clean with plenty of linens and towels (bathroom and beach). Beds are comfortable (even the futon style) switches are labeled. Plenty of warm water and fans to keep cool. Quiet and not many "kooki" frogs around and it just adds to the character of the location along with the resident geckos (don't harm them as they are curious too or looking for bugs...we were hoping mosquitoes). The kitchen accommodates the occupancy and no one was stepping over each other (party of 7). The feel the house is very plantation-like, calming, and comfortable. TV has basic cable and there is Wi-Fi available. Some phone service is spotty (I didn't have issues) but there is phone if you need to call anyone. Richard is the epitome of a great host. Directions to the house and house rules are clear as stated in the agreement. He and his 'ohana are very welcoming and are available for assistance, if needed. He gave a courtesy call the first day to ensure we arrived safely and asked if we had any trouble finding the house. We didn't as the directions were very clear and descriptive. This is one of the reasons why I chose this location. He's very communicative (replies within 24 hours) and the description was the only one that gave a volcano update. As far as location is concerned, it is about 40 min from Hilo but the streets are well lit and street signs are clear. As stated, it is near a cliff and there isn't a sandy beach as it is mostly lava/rock. The park is within walking distance (and you pass it to get to the house) and while you can go down, I would suggest only strong swimmers from what I observed. I stayed on the rocks taking in the scene and listened to the ocean crash against the rocks. If there was way to access to the water, I didn't go far enough to find it. Overall, would definitely choose this location again. Did I mention there were even suggestions of where to go around the island if it was your first visit? You are provided with suggestions of restaurants, sites, landmarks, etc. with your agreement upon reservation confirmation. Mahalo Richard and 'ohana for sharing Koholā Hale with our 'ohana and ensuring we had the best experience during our visit to the Big Island. A hui hou!

Awesome place
We have been visiting this area for many years and always stayed at a cottage that was wiped out by last year’s lava flow. Our first time here and we couldn’t have been more pleased. Fantastic Home, great location, helpful host
The pictures don't do justice to this great home. Fab views, open spacious home to relax in. Richard has a created a guest book with all the information on what to do, who to call, and how to get there. He also has some nice travel guides for the area. We did not use the scuba gear or bikes, but we did enjoy the beach towels, bar-b-cue, and laundry facilities.

Great host and house
I stayed three nights here and was impressed. The house is across from the ocean so you fall asleep to the waves, and it's in a quiet neighbourhood. Very comfortable king size bed in the master, with great walk in shower in the ensuite. Multiple ceiling fans allow for airflow if you have the ample windows and doors shut. Lots of hot water, and the house is stocked as a home would be. Love the huge lanai at the front, plus the guest book is coconuts that have fallen off trees on the property. The house is a fair distance off the highway, and about 10 minutes from Pahoa, or 20 minutes from Keauu. 30 minutes to Hilo and 60 minutes to Volcanoes National Park. I'd recommend this place for groups of 1-6, and would definitely consider staying here again. The host was very communicative and quick to respond to any questions or concerns, plus provided helpful info about the surrounding area. Check in and out was very easy, and the price for what you get is really good.

Nice quiet neighborhood
Comfortable house in a nice neighborhood right across the street from the ocean. Watch the sunrise from the park down the street. Very quiet area. Step back in time in the town of Pahoa. Like a small version of 70s Santa Cruz. Very cool. Haven't seen that many hippies since the free concerts in Golden Gate Park. Brought me right back home. Go to Uncle Roberts' down at the end of the road; food, fun art. Not very far from Hilo and all of its' attractions. Kathy, Payton, and John From Sonora, CA

About the host

Hosted by Richard Marston

Host profile image
I was born and raised in California and moved here 25 years ago. My wife's family is from this area so naturally, we would come here to vacation with our own family. When it came time to retire, we built this house and moved to the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii. We've been on vacation ever since!

Why they chose this property

This house is located directly across the street from the ocean which protects it from some of the strong waves and spray that frequent the area. On days that have tropical showers, we have a covered lanai and cabana with BBQ, perfect to enjoy the outdoors in comfort.

What makes this property unique

You can sit on the front lanai with your cup of Kona coffee and watch the sunrise. On our nice pleasant Hawaiian nights you can sit and watch the silvery Moon come up over the ocean and if you're lucky, you'll be here during whale season, when you can hear the humpback whales bellow and play right in front of your very own home away from home!
