About this property

Secluded island hideaway for 2 with panoramic sea views

The Lookout is a former wartime signal station which has been lovingly converted into a comfortable and secluded holiday cottage. The Lookout is nestled on a hilltop 100 yards above the Davaar Island Lighthouse with outstanding views up Kilbrannan Sound and across to Arran and Ailsa Craig.

This one bedroom cottage is unique and charming with many features retained from its previous role. On the ground floor there is a wonderful open plan cosy kitchen/sitting room with a well equipped kitchen area s as well as a wood burning stove, providing the perfect setting for a peaceful break or romantic getaway.

Off the sitting room is the bedroom with a comfortable king size bed with heated mattress topper and 100% cotton ben linen. An ensuite bathroom with shower leads off the bedroom.

On the 2nd floor there is a wonderful Observatory from which the outstanding views can be enjoyed through the resident telescope and guests can relax in the comfortable seating complete with ample supply of reading and art materials.

One of the original features retained is an internal ladder through a hatch joining the sitting room and the observatory upstairs (unsuitable for infirm or children).

Leading off the observatory is a roof terrace which provides a secluded place to sit on sunny days or on clear nights, stargazing next to the fire pit can be an unforgettable experience.

All prices include full bed linen, towels, essential supplies (and complimentary local whisky, gin and our eggs!) as well as transfer to and from the island. Crossings are made to this remote island at low tide in our 4×4 with an experienced driver. We will advise on crossing times when you book.

island paradise
The Lookout was everything we hoped for and more. Nestled into the hillside overlooking the water and across to Arran, it is the ideal place for a wee relaxing and slightly more remote break (but with easy access at low tide to extra cheese, snacks and wine for the terrace!). We had a peaceful few days pottering around the island, exploring the caves and walking up and across the hill. It was a treat to sit and watch the birds, seals and local feral goats and listen to the sound of the waves. Even the drive down was beautiful and we made time to stop and explore beaches and old cemeteries. The Lookout itself is cosy and clean and has everything you could want or need. We particularly loved sitting upstairs to watch the sun rise and set. We will definitely be back...in fact, have already booked! Thank you Ned and Toni for being amazing hosts and sharing this island paradise with us.

Peaceful great view island getaway from it all
The property has a cosy comfy cottage feel and look internally. The bed was comfy as well. The viewing room above is great for reading etc. The Lookout really is a great place for viewing the sea and surrounding vistas! We enjoyed a very peaceful week away from normal life and noise. No noisy traffic except for the odd motorboat or lifeboat on call! We took our kayaks and were able to leave them near the slipway ready for use. We explored around the island and across the bay as well as walking over the island. Toni & Ned were great hosts and available if we needed anything, especially a lift across the causway giving us extra time on the mainland before the tide turned! A great getaway in a cosy property! Will return in the near future!

The Lookout, Davaar Island
My husband & I had a fantastic stay at The Lookout. The name of the property says it all. The views from every angle are spectacular, both day & night (if its a clear night the skies are amazing). The property was clean & very well equipped, we didn't want for anything.

Amazing find
Absolutely beautiful place, I was excited from the moment I found it. I immediately contacted the host Toni with questions regarding privacy etc, as our dog can be quite unsociable, and she couldn't have been more helpful so we booked.....and weren't disappointed. The place is so beautiful, stunning views in all directions and one of the most peaceful places ever visited. We intended to fully relax for four days and that's exactly what we did. The property is fantastic, small but very comfortable and clean, quirky, lovely log burner, very comfy bed, I slept brilliantly. The observatory has the most amazing views and we found it perfect to relax in with a good book. Ned and Toni are brilliant hosts, friendly and nothing is too much bother. We will most definitely be back, thanks for our lovely stay

Perfect Escape
Fabulous property that was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Absolutely fabulous views from every window and upstairs in the lookout was amazing. We saw seals from the kitchen on a few mornings. We also enjoyed planning our days by the tides, although we got it a bit wrong one day and ended up having a midnight adventure with a torch! It also gave us the chance to visit the cinema and have a great meal in The Black Sheep. A perfect escape- we didn’t want to go home.

Peace and Quiet in Abundance
The property is not luxurious but is very comfortable with absolutely everything you could think of provided. The views from the cottage are outstanding and the island is peaceful and lovely to walk around. Support from Ned and Toni, the island's management team is second to none. Nothing is too much trouble.

An Absolutely Magical Stay
The Lookout, and Davaar itself, is an absolutely magical place. The cottage was spotlessly clean and very well-appointed including lots of thoughtful touches. Ned and Toni are excellent hosts—easy to communicate with, very accommodating, and extremely warm and welcoming to guests of their island home. The natural environs of Davaar are beyond words—the views are absolutely unmatched, and you’ll earn your whiskey with the many hilltop and beachside walks around the island. It was a completely idyllic getaway and we wouldn’t hesitate to make another transatlantic trip to visit Davaar.

Perfect retreat from a busy life
My wife and I had an amazing week on Island Davaar. The fact that you are cut off from the mainland, via the causeway, for much of the day, means that you have no option, other than to enjoy the beauty of the place. The tide very much determines your schedule, so you have to let go and allow nature to take control. And the nature that you see from the island is incredible. Ned and Toni do a brilliant job of looking after you. They have the perfect balance of being available to assist, without detracting from the fact that you are on an island with very few others. We would definitely return to “The Lookout” and look forward to doing so in the future.

A very special place
The Lookout was a wonderful place to stay. Even with just the ground floor, it would be an excellent place to get away from it all. The top floor viewing platform takes it to another level. Clearly built for a war-time purpose of giving commanding views over Loch Campbeltown, it's been furnished to a lovely standard and is a superb place to sit, sleep, watch and read as the tides gently flow in and out of the Loch. Toni and Ned were excellent hosts who made us feel very welcome. It's not many places we've been to where complementary local whiskey is provided! We hope to be back.

Away from it all
Ned and Toni have done a great job fitting out the accommodation. They also do all they can to make you feel very welcome. It is quite a journey to get here.... but absolutely worth it when you do. Being on a place with no cars and virtually no people - and in accommodation with amazing - and ever changing - views is an experience we will never forget and hope to repeat one day.

Beautiful location, didn’t want to come home.
We couldn’t fault our stay at all other than not wanting to leave. Ned & Toni we’re brilliant and I especially loved the cuddles from Ollie (the collie) We had a lovely walk around the island to the caves but didn’t make it all the way up the path cut by Ned (just means we have to come again to tackle it)

A truly special place
This place is just marvellous. The lookout is very well equipped and the views are stunning. Davaar island is so special! It's remoteness and beauty were perfect for us and our dog. Ned, our host, was kind and knowledgeable. We even saw a seal close up! Hoping to be back soon.

Peaceful and comfortable
Had a great 4 night stay at the Lookout. Lucky enough to experience holing up with the fire on for the first day or two which was cold and rainy, followed by a couple of days in gorgeous warm sunshine making the most of the island, surrounds, and the deck upstairs. Hosts were helpful but not intrusive. Would love to return one day.
