Chef Dominique Macquet
Born on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, Macquet grew up with Creole, Asian, African and Indian home-cooked dishes. Since then, his career has taken him around the world tasting, exploring and experiencing the flavors of both hemispheres. Macquet has honed his skills in locations as diverse as South Africa, London, Southeast Asia and Beverly Hills. He has cooked aboard the legendary ocean liner Queen Elizabeth II, at the James Beard Foundation, at the White House (2x) and at the U.S. Embassy in Paris. One of Macquet’s highest honors and favorite memories was cooking Nelson Mandela’s first meal outside South African prison walls.
After his extensive travels, the chef chose New Orleans as the perfect stage for his ongoing culinary celebration. Following an award-winning stint as executive chef at the Bistro at the Maison de Ville, Macquet opened the eponymous “Dominique’s” at the Maison Dupuis hotel in the French Quarter which was named the “Best New Restaurant in the United States” by Esquire Magazine. There he began the process of returning to his culinary roots. Due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, Macquet temporarily relocated to Houston opening “Dominque’s” at the Marriott Westchase, receiving high accolades from multiple Texas publications.
Upon returning to New Orleans, the first “Dominique’s on Magazine” was born. It was here that Macquet’s innovative combination of island flavors with the precision of French technique truly came to fruition. As his new namesake restaurant, “Dominique’s” again was named the “Best New Restaurant in the United States” by Esquire Magazine; also was named “Best New Restaurant” from New Orleans Magazine; received four stars from City Business; and a glowing Four Bean review from Brett Anderson of the Times-Picayune. In late 2011, he also opened “Tamarind,” a French-Vietnamese restaurant within the renovated Hotel Modern on Lee Circle. With all this success, the search began for a larger location – leading the chef to open the new “Dominique’s on Magazine” in the summer of 2012. New Orleans Magazine named it “Restaurant of the year.”
With co-author John DeMers, Macquet has published two successful cookbooks, “Dominique’s Fresh Flavors: Cooking with Latitude in New Orleans” (Ten Speed Press) and “Tropical Latitudes” (Bright Sky Press). He explains that while he sometimes thinks of his cooking as “Tropical French,” others call it simply “latitude,” perfectly summing up the around-the-globe approach Macquet brings to every dish on the menu.
Macquet’s latest venture, Bordeaux, was an ambitious project to develop an upscale indoor/outdoor venue with elegant al fresco dining. The concept features a farm to table menu including the freshest crudo, ceviche and grilled fish, and boasts an exotic imported French rotisserie. It is doubtful that any other restaurant in the country can match Bordeaux’s offering of four to five different rotissiere meats simultaneously on the menu for each and every dinner service, e.g. pheasant, guinea fowl, Maple Leaf Duck, imported French Poulet Rouge organic chicken; suckling pig, spring lamb, and artisanal farm raised Mississippi Goat.

A Wonderful Stay with Exceptional Hosts!

I recently had the pleasure of staying at this lovely property, and I can't recommend it highly enough! Dominique and Marianella were incredibly welcoming and resourceful, making sure I had everything we needed for a fantastic vacation. The room was well-equipped with all the essentials, ensuring a comfortable start to my getaway. One of my favorite features was the charming small patio outside, which provided a delightful space to sit and enjoy a cup of tea surrounded by beautiful vines and warm sunshine.Thank you for such a wonderful experience – I look forward to returning in the future!

Abysmal

This place is the worst I've seen in the continental US. I've seen worse but only in Egypt in 1971. The room is actually a shed, a damp, moldy, smelly, minuscule shed. The linens and towels are thin, old and stained. The room is dirty, scuffed and really tiny. The fake brick wall panels were coming off the wall because of the damp conditions. We had to ask for 2 more towels on our third day because its so damp in the room that the used towels wouldn't dry. It was difficult to breath. There are NO cups, plates or utensils paper or otherwise No coffee maker, kettle or even a small bottle of water. the windows are small and overgrown with ivy. They are head height and every other guest peers in as they all walk by on the narrow path. My husband who is 81 had to sit on the unkempt, overgrown, filthy patio (nothing at all like the photos) to allow me room to get dressed. I'm from Europe,I'm used to small rooms. We were in town for our granddaughter's graduation and visit. Like many people we are on a fixed on a fixed income. We were stuck there. I was so happy to leave this horrible place. The actual house looked fine. The owners should be ashamed of themselves.

Great location to get around city

Basically used as sleeping spot for jazzfest so bargain for location. Small for 2 people but it worked! Able to spend money on better restaurants than on lodging. Brought my own small fan which helped air circulation too.

New Orleans

The property exterior and garden were great. Super private and quiet. The space itself was more cramped than it appeared in the photos. That being said as a home base for our trip it was sufficient. There were not any extra linens/towels. For a 4-day trip 1 towel per person was not enough and the towels were old and ratty.

Owner has the cutest 2 doggies! Location was walking distance from Magazine street, which had plenty to do. Rental space was pretty small but just went there to sleep. Hot tub was great. Shower was not great. HOST was really nice to talk to and let us drop our bags off early.

Nice

Location was nice, within walking distance to dining and night life, space was a little dark, we came in at night and had to use our cell phones to see the walking path. We tried to get some of the lights on the trees to work but none would. Other than that it was clean, decent spot.

You get what you pay for

The blankets were stained. There was hair on the floor. The Wi-Fi network didn’t exist. The pillows (so thin I don’t know if you can call them that) were stained yellow. There are some cute but noisy dogs on the property that will likely wake you up early in the AM. No privacy from the host/owner. I highly recommend staying anywhere else.

Avoid if you like privacy

Very disappointed, wish we had read the reviews we just looked at the pictures. Needless to say if you want privacy this is not the place to stay. This rental has so many cameras it’s a bit uncomfortable. The studio is tiny, and when you add the fees and cost of rental it came out to be more expensive than a luxury hotel room. But the luxury hotel room would have came without roaches. My wife and I had three roaches that I took pictures of and also noticed that the studio doesn’t have a door sweep under the door so bugs could just get in through under the door. Also the shower seems like it was installed by a diy’r because it doesn’t drain very well and after we took showers and came back to property it smelt like mildew. My wife and I felt horrible the next day. Speaking of the next day we were woken up by the owner and their friend when we wanted to atleast try to sleep in but a 8am all we heard was two men talking outside as if they were right next to us. The bed is a cheaper very firm mattress with a cheap bed frame that makes a lot of noise just getting into it. Then there is the hot tub which is one of the reasons we booked this place and when we saw how the two cameras that are pointed directly at the hot tub it made my wife very uncomfortable. I get the need for cameras but there is a reason you have my card on file if something gets broken I wouldn’t want someone having footage of my wife and I in a hot tub just creepy. Needles to say it wasn’t a good stay.

Do you research? Would not recommend.

I wanted a weekend getaway for just me and my wife. We wanted something with a hot tub and that’s why this was one of our options. When we arrived to the house, we actually walked into the wrong house, but the 725 number was on front of the house. Very embarrassing. The room that we had reserved was only the size of the large bathroom. More like a small shop that was converted to an efficiency room. Literally had to squeeze in and walk around the bed. My wife had to squeeze her self in between the vanity in the bathroom to get on the toilet. The homeowners had two dogs that barked and barked, and was so disturbing. The hot tub was built into the back porch of the house that was next to this room. Zero privacy for getting in a hot tub. We did not even sit in the hot tub because of it. I would not recommend this house to anybody unless it was the absolute last thing available. We would feel so much better if we would have just rented a room at a motel.

Anniversary trip!

Host was a great communicator. He upgraded our room and gave us a cookbook he wrote as he was unable to manage our meal/ wine pairing during our stay. House was clean and beautiful backyard space like the photos showed. It was within walking distance to a streetcar and tons of bars/ fun activities to do. Great location! Great host! Will be back and stay again

It was very basic...

I am usually not a review person, but thought I'd give more insight to the rental than previous travelers as I wish I had known a little bit more of what the place was like. Here are a few examples: absolutely no where to put your luggage - the studio is very little so if you put suitcases on the floor anywhere you will have to step over them - we ended up using the small table as best we could to keep the bags off the floor. No closet or anywhere to hang clothes. We had nice clothes we brought for a graduation that we really want to hang to shake out the wrinkles from packing. Ended up borrowing a couple hangers from our friends that live locally and used the shower bar as our make shift closet. Ladies, to do your make up is very difficult in the bathroom. There is one overhead light that isn't bright so hard to see using the mirror, As another guest mentioned...bathroom very small. I am 5'6 and had to use the door frame to hold on to slide between the wall and the toilet. There is another rental room behind the studio and you can hear the people in that room very easily - coughing and talking. There is a nice courtyard, but when the other guests are using it - they are right outside your window - I looked out and there was a back of a head ....you can hear them on the patio and smell the smoke if smoking etc...It's not a bad location and the price was great but it is very basic...not even a box of klennex or a bar of soap. Just be prepared to not expect much. The sheets didn't match, comforter seemed old....Just wish I had known some of this...hopes this help another traveler make their decision.

Upper Garden District units

This was the perfect location for some reunions and visiting with friends that I grew up with. I was in the studio unit. I just wish that it had had a coffee maker or a ceramic mug that I could have heated up water in for coffee! Unit had a microwave and small refrig, which was great.

I have lived in this wonderful city for over 20 years and am happy to call New Orleans my home. Cooking will always be my first passion. I also enjoy soccer, traveling, biking, swimming, & love the outdoors. Manchester City is my team.

I was born on the island of Mauritius, which is in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar and South Africa.
I am a classically French trained chef. I grew up with Creole,Asian, African and Indian home-cooked dishes. I am also a sommelier and really enjoy white burgundies, Pinot Noirs, and Washington state red wines.

Please inquire about my availability to create a special menu during your stay, wine tasting, or a cooking class using house-grown herbs, peppers, local ingredients, & local seafood.

I have a cookbook called "Tropical Latitude".
It's about cooking with the tropics from Africa to Brazil, Caribbean, Southeast Asia, New Orleans and quite a few recipes from Mauritius. If interested, I have copies at the house for $29.99.

Why they chose this property

You will definitely have a local experience There are restaurants, wine lounge coffee shops, shopping just steps away.
