Lovely Brittany Cottage

We had a great week - thanks Joanne and Jim - and lovely weather! The cottage is beautiful, as are the gardens and area. Very relaxing week with extremely helpful hosts. Only slight downside for us was that we hadn't realised from the listing that the bathroom was downstairs - something that folk who might need to use the facilities during the night should be aware of! The cottage is perfectly located for visiting such places as Dinan, Dinard, St Malo and Mont St Michel, all of which we really enjoyed doing. The cottage had everything we needed for a great break.

Week Bretagne

Jo, Jim and Hector: yet again thanks for the lovely stay! We recommend!

Ganz großes Lob an Jo& Jim !!!! Sandra & Markus

Fantastic week in gorgeous cottage and peaceful surroundings

We enjoyed a wonderful week in Saint-Helen, despite not having the best weather! The cottage and surroundings are even better than the pictures look, and Jim and Jo were the most welcoming and friendly hosts you could ask for. Nothing was too much, and they provided lots of advice and ideas of what to do and see. We all enjoyed the pool, garden & games room. Our 2 year old especially loved seeing the chickens, and our dog loved running around in the nearby woods. We also liked Jim's cider and beer, and their home made jam which we took home with us :) The location is fantastic - close to Dinan, St Malo and Dinard which are all lovely places to visit. In fact, it's such a peaceful and beautiful place, we've now started looking at houses we'd like to buy in France! Thank you Jim and Jo!

Wonderful, perfect break !

Our hosts, Jo and Jim were absolutely wonderful. An encyclopaedic knowledge of information on Brittany. They were available when needed, but not - if not. Nothing is too much trouble for them. A file crammed with up to date tourist information was available and a great library of books, music and videos, on the shelves. The cottage was just perfect for myself, father and brother. Comfortable beds and furnishings and as foodies, the kitchen had everything we could possibly have needed - and more. We loved using the range cooker. Two double bedrooms, and a third room with a single and pull-out, creating two singles. A cot and linen, were also available. There were so many thoughtful extras, like a stair gate, highchair, iron and board, laundry facilities, freezer and a dishwasher available, to name a few. The whole house is beautifully and thoughtfully furnished. The location is peaceful and quiet but within a 10 minute, very easy drive of supermarkets, boulangerie, bars, restaurants etc. A perfect cottage to use as a base for touring/walking/cycling and a beautiful garden when you want to relax. A pool is available for cooling off and a BBQ for outside cooking. The internet was strong and there was a huge chest full of board games. An outside barn room had darts and a table tennis table. For colder evenings there is central heating and a wood burning stove in the lounge. We had a wonderful, perfect week here at the cottage and we are now wanting to book "two" weeks next year instead of just the one.

Fabulous cottage. Very comfortable

Having stayed in many gites and cottages in Northern France over the past 25+ years, this cottage is definitely one of the very best. The open plan living area is very comfortable and the kitchen area is well equipped. Upstairs the 3 bedrooms are a good size and the bed was very very comfortable. Waking up to a dawn chorus of birds and cows was a joy and the view from the bedroom window is fantastic. Jo and Jim are perfect hosts - they ensure you have your privacy but are on hand if you have any questions or would like suggestions on where to go. Les Fougeres is well positioned to visit the beaches around St Malo and the beautiful towns of Dinan, St Malo, Dol-de-Bretagne and Fougeres. We loved our 3 week stay and are already planning to return next year.

Fantastic!

Fabulous holiday...the drive from Calais was lovely, the directions provided by Jo and Jim were spot on and we found our way to the cottage with no problems at all. Arrived in beautiful sunshine to a wonderful little cottage set in a small hamlet. Perfect place to either sit and relax but still close enough to be able to go out if wanted. Jim was kind enough to give us some great recommendations of places to walk our dogs. So much to see and do in the area...can't wait to return!

Little Slice of Heaven

We (couple in our 50's) stayed in the gite with our dog Harvey for two restful weeks in September. From first booking the gite to our departure the service from the owners Jim and Jo was exceptional. En route to the gite we received a welcoming text from Jim advising that it was now ready. Upon arrival they were there waiting to welcome us and showed us around the gite they then left us alone to settle in. The gite is attached to the owners property in a beautiful stone house adorned with window boxes, there is a large secure garden at the rear laid to lawn, perfect for our dog. Jim and Jo's knowledge of the local area was so helpful; advising of local shops, bars, restaurants and good walks for us and our dog. Their dog Patch is the most chilled canine - so tolerant with our excited cocker spaniel. The weather was a bit mixed but when sunny it was lovely to sit out in the garden on the patio area. The gite is fully equipped with everything needed for a self catering stay and there is Sky TV should you want to catch up on the news. A separate utility with freezer, washing machine etc is also free to use for guests. We ordered a first night meal from Jo (quiche, salad and sticky toffee pudding) which was delicious as we didn't want to cook on our first evening. Les Fougeres is set in a small countryside hamlet of about 10 properties however large supermarkets, local bakers etc are only a ten minute drive away. At night there is no light pollution and you will be amazed at just how many stars you can see. Jim and Jo are the perfect hosts - not intrusive but always available for help and advice, they even book your dog's vet appointment for the return to the UK. We would have no hesitation in highly recommending both the hosts and the property to future holiday makers - you'll love it! (Thanks for the chutney Jo!)

Lovely quiet place to relax

The place is great to relax and very quiet. You only might hear a car passing by sometimes and think that you are in a very remote place. On the one side this is true but on the other side it takes you less than 10 minutes drive to the very nice ancient town of Dinan and a big supermarket and less than 5 minutes to the motorway which brings you to St. Malo and to the coast. Except for the owners and maybe guests in the other house they rented you won't see anybody if you don't want to. Jo and Jim are great and very helpful. One minor defect with the shower we mentioned had been fixed immediately. The two give you the feeling that you are more a friend visiting than a guest who paid for. The pool, table tennis, dart and the big lawns are perfect for children. It was no problem that your dog emptied their dog's feeding dish in their kitchen several times or that we dried our big rubber dinghy on their lawn. The house was equipped like advertized. In general everything was perfect (except for the weather ;-) )

On arrival we were met by Joanne & Jim and made to feel very welcome. The cottage was very comfortable and had all the amenities for an excellent stay. The cottage is in an idyllic position with some fantastic walks and cycle rides. Should you prefer to sit and relax the lawns and garden are superb. All the beaches and historic towns including the famous Mont St Michel are just a short drive away. A fine supermarket with some wonderful foods fresh fruit and fish just 10 minutes away. We had a very pleasant and rewarding holiday and we will certainly visit the cottage again. Bob & Maggie

Beautiful set and well equipped Brittany cottage

The cottage is a wonderful place for a restful holiday and we were fortunate in the Spring weather. The house is beautifully set and the sunny table in front (see the photo) keeps the evening sunshine which meant that a drink outside even on early May evenings was still a pleasure. It is a fantastic place for a dog as there are terrific walks on the doorstep and the immediate area around the cottage is well away from the road. Patch the resident dog is also very welcoming! Joanne and Jim, who Patch keeps an eye on, are tremendous and helpful hosts providing a wealth of information on the area and - particularly significant for us - great guides to local restaurants and markets. They arranged our visit to the local vet before returning to the UK with our dog and overall could not have been more helpful. This part of Brittany is a delight. Dinan the closest large town is wonderfully atmospheric and walks along the Rance from it are fantastic after lunch. Cancale on the coast is glorious and a must for anyone who likes oysters. The astonishing number of 'wild' sandy beaches along the coast, set in glorious scenery are fabulous. I am sure in July and August the roads and towns are more crowded but we found traveling about easy and pleasant. And the bright, cosy, cottage is a great place to chill out - very comfortable, clean and well equipped. The only thing I would point out is that the bathroom is on the ground floor and the bedrooms upstairs. This was not an issue for us but I can imagine it might affect those with mobility problems. We have rented gites, flats, cottages and houses in Britain, France, Italy and Spain for some 30 years and I would unquestionably put this one in the top 5%. We look forward to returning.

Fantastic family holiday

We had a lovely family holiday in the gite. It was very clean and had everything we needed - including a cot, high chair and stair gate. The enclosed garden was fantastic for small children and the pool was wonderful. It was a short drive to several good beaches. Jo and Jim were really friendly and made time to chat to both us and our children. Our 3 year old loved collecting eggs from the chickens! They had lots of great ideas for days out. Thank you for a wonderful holiday.

Excellent base for exploring north Brittany

We stayed in the cottage, which was well appointed, clean and comfortable - including wifi and dishwasher. Although there was no air-con the cottage was lovely and cool despite high temperatures. Jo and Jim were excellent hosts - available for help if and when required but not in your face (happy to have a beer and a chat if you want!). Supermarkets within 10 min drive, and only a half hour or so drive to all the main attractions in the area (Dinan, Dinard, St Malo, Mont St Michel etc). The "back" garden with open air pool is hared with renters of the gite but this didn't cause any issues during our stay. The cottage has its own garden area to the front and owners are also happy for you to use their shaded pergola area. Dog friendly (owners have their own dog and local farm's dog also makes regular guest appearances, so beware if you are anxious around dogs) and ours had a great time - can particularly recommend St Colomb beach about 20 mins away as a dog friendly beach. Would not hesitate to recommend to others
