About this property

Captain Niko's House Apt 1 within large renovated house with spacious courtyard

Located in the very center of Jelsa, this century-old property of Jelsa’s famed captains consists of two newly renovated adjoining houses, both accessed through a large courtyard. The magnificent spacious courtyard, a hidden gem of the property is the essence of true Mediterranean living: outdoor living with full privacy in the most centrally located property.
Surrounded by exceptional cultural and historical heritage, the property full of character offers a special holiday.

Apartment # 1 (ideally for 2, max 4) consists of a fully equipped kitchen with bedroom, living and dining area, bathroom (shower + WC), and half-bathroom (additional WC and washbasin). The air-conditioned apartment is accessed by a staircase through the 70m2 courtyard that is dominated by one of the oldest bougainvilleas on the island.
The spacious bedroom has a large double bed (160 x 200) and a beautiful antique wardrobe and dresser. In the living area, there is a double sofa bed, TV, dining table, and chairs.

Free WiFi is available.

The 5m long apartment terrace above the inner courtyard provides peace and privacy. Both the terrace and courtyard are used by guests in Apartment # 1.

The Sea has been an inseparable part of our ancestor's lives – a vocation, devotion, and inspiration that can still be felt in every corner of the house. Appreciating it ourselves too, the house has been renovated with great care and attention for every detail.

Please note that both apartments share the same entrance and passage through the courtyard. The courtyard is used by guests in Apartment 1 while the rooftop terrace is used by guests from Apartment 2.
Apartment 1 and 2 can be also rented together by the same party.

Getting around: While staying on the island, don’t miss Hvar, the town of exceptional monumental heritage, and if you’re looking for more dynamic evenings, it’s best to be there when the night falls.
For those who wish to discover the beauties of Hvar Island, in Jelsa, you can rent a car, bicycle, or small boat.
Local buses also operate to Hvar Town, Stari Grad, and Vrboska daily.

From Jelsa, you can easily visit Brac Island in a day: there are daily excursions by boat (a 60 min ride) to Bol where you can spend the whole day at the well-known Zlatni rat beach.

Owing to its perfect central location, the apartment is equally suitable in the low season when the town is quieter, and the favorable climate of the island offers you a possibility to discover the nearby villages, either driving or walking through the rich vegetation along the vineyards that yield the island's well-known wines, olive groves, and fields with a multitude of medicinal herbs.

Arriving in Jelsa: The nearest airport is Split with a shuttle service from the airport to Split harbor (30 km). The bus stops near the Jadrolinija ticket office where you can buy tickets either for the catamaran to Jelsa (via Bol) 2hrs or for the passenger/car ferry (2hrs) to Stari Grad and then continue by direct local bus to Jelsa (20 min). We do advise buying the catamaran/ferry tickets in advance online.
If you would like a taxi collection from Stari Grad this can be arranged.

The sound of the church bells can hardly be heard as all windows have double glazing. Still, this could be an issue for light sleepers.

Perfect retreat in idyllic Jelsa

Ideally located, this charming apartment is just steps away from all the restaurants, bars and cafes that cluster around the town’s scenic harbor. My wife and I absolutely loved the town of Jelsa, and the sanctuary of Lada’s home. If you are planing a trip to the island of Hvar, visit Jelsa and stay with Lada, you will not regret it! We will definitely return if the opportunity arises.

The most fabulous stay at this authentic, historic Jelsa home!

My mum and me stayed at Lada Laura's historic house at the centre of Jelsa for a week. Upon arrival we were very warmly received by our hosts, who, throughout our stay, made us feel most comfortable and welcome. The flat itself was in immaculate condition and I have seldom experienced such attention to details regarding cleanliness. Concerning the location, we could not have wished for a better situation: there was a parking spot right in front of the house, the 'centre' of Jelsa was right outside the doorstep with authentic local 'Konobas' in short walking distance. We were mostly interested in an active holiday, which proved most feasible in combination with our accommodation: there is beaches to walk to in various distances, ranging from 5 minutes to 2-3 hour trips. A place that rented out stand up paddles was right in the harbour and on various occasions we paddled from the harbour to the beaches and rocks that we fancied. Regarding activities, local tips, recommendations on food, olive oil, restaurants and a myriad of other enquiries, our hosts were an inexhaustible source of inspiration and indispensable local knowledge. We visited several sites (restaurants, beaches, etc) that we never would have found without them and in addition to that, we learned a lot about the local life on Hvar (the 'Bura' wind, Prosek, Lada Laura's grandfather, Captain Niko). Without our host's hospitality and interest in their guests, our stay would certainly have been very different. As a reaction to our interest in local sea salt and herbs, we even got to take home a whole lot of bay leaves from their garden! Honestly, we couldn't have wished for better hosts, both on the practical but also on a personal level. From our bedroom windows facing the plaza, we got to observe religious processions taking place in the church opposite of the house, which was an event noteworthy by itself, despite not having experienced a religious education ourselves. How beautiful to see that right outside our window, we witnessed a local social gathering spirit, proving that Jelsa is home to a diverse community. We will certainly come again. Thank you so very much for hosting us and we hope to meet you again soon!

When in Jelsa do as ...

...located in a very heart of beautiful town of Jelsa, experience how the locals live. I bet no other apartment will give you that in Jelsa. Few steps from main square to get a morning cofee, fresh baguette and sincere smiles from locals. Leave your mobiles, watches in a drawer..forget about time..just enjoy. Lada will make you more then welcome and a book on the table will give you tips about everything you need to know about Hvar. Apartment is well presented with pictures. Highly recommended!

Amazing

We had an amazing stay and Captain Niko's house! Lada is a very helpful and knowledgable lady, she was fantastic, helping us before we arrived and was helping us with timetables and ferry information for reaching Hvar island and Jelsa. Lada and her Husband take great pride in their home and the courtyard and it is kept immaculately clean. It couldn't be situated better with a short walk down to all the bars and restaraunts or beaches just a few minutes away. The folder that she has taken the time to put together is also very useful, clearly she loves the island and all that it has to offer. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you staying here and we will be back next year!

Magic Jelsa

We had a wonderful stay here but a week wasn't long enough. Had we known how much we would have loved the apartment, located right in the middle of the gorgeous village of Jelsa we would have stayed two weeks. Everything was perfect, it was spotlessly clean, comfortable, 4 supermarkets, too many restaurants to count, beaches, shaded walks, ferries, buses, temperature was high 20's to 30's and Lada is extremely helpful and generous- her elderly neighbour was so lovely she kept plying us with her home-grown tomatoes and cucumbers. This is a place we would love to keep coming back to if only it wasn't so far from Australia. Thankyou Lada for the best week of our 8 week holiday.

Lovely, relaxing holiday destination

We would highly recommend Jelsa as a great place to stay. Beautiful, peaceful, and everyone was extremely welcoming. The apartment was just what we needed. Perfect, central location, well decorated and well maintained. It was the perfect base for us to explore the island by car (one day's hire was enough), by bus (great way to get to and from Hvar Town), by bike (cheap to hire and the perfect way to get around) and on foot. Will definitely come back!

Perfectly located apartment in Jelsa

We had a wonderful week staying at Captain Niko's Apartment No.1 which is right in the heart of Jelsa. The apartment is in a fantastic position - a 3 minute walk from the restaurants and shops, but it's position behind the main church in the town shields it from the noise and bustle of the harbour. Lada was a great host, leaving lots of information about where to eat, sight-see and how to get around the island. The apartment was clean and had all the facilities you need. The air conditioning was welcome for the week that we were there as the temperatures soared to high 30's. We travelled from Split via the seaplane - the most elegant way to get to the island! This visit we hired bikes to travel to beaches/rocks which were mostly crowd free and had the most wonderfully relaxing time. Would highly recommend.

Charming apartment in the heart of Jelsa

My boyfriend and I stayed in apartment 1 at Captain Niko's house. Lada and her husband were very welcoming, with Lada kindly waiting for our arrival at 11pm to take us to the apartment. The courtyard of the house is stunning and the apartment we stayed was homely, clean and had everything we needed for our stay. We used the kitchen and the freeze blocks provided were a god send for our picnics. Lada has provided a whole folder of information and tips on things to do, which is great and includes everything you need to know about the buses and the ferry to the mainland. The apartment looks over the church, which is beautiful and provides you with an authentic wake up call. We arrived just before the summer season really kicked in and Jelsa was wonderfully relaxed, and while the town is much smaller than Stari Grad or Hvar Town there are still plenty of bars and restaurants a stone's throw from the apartment. The majority are around the harbour side which was just two or three minutes walk. The nearest sandy beach - Mina - is well worth the 20min walk. While the sandy part is small, the cove is large and sheltered making it perfect for swimming. We would highly recommend hiring a boat from the harbour side and exploring further north of Jelsa. The fee was around £35 for the whole day and we found some beautiful coves which you practically have to yourselves. The waters are crystal clear and perfect for snorkelling. The bus service on Hvar is great value and reliable, if sometimes a little late. We used it to go to Hvar Town and Stari Gard. We loved our holiday to Jelsa, which was exactly the laid back week we were hoping for, and Lada and her husband were the perfect hosts.

A wonderful holiday

We are a couple in our early 60s and stayed at Captain Niko's House for two and a half weeks from mid September to early October. We ended up at Jelsa because we were booking late and Hvar town had nothing much available. As it turned out we were delighted with our choice and would definitely consider going back another year. The house was exactly as described; it is right in the centre of town, three minutes from the catamaran, two minutes from the bars and one (crucial ) minute from any noise or disturbance that you can expect in a tourist resort in high season.I'll mention the Church bells because I notice that others have. The church clock chimes on the hour and the bells call people to mass. They absolutely did not disturb us! Lada was friendly and helpful with excellent English. She is based in Split and has local friends who can help with any problem. We had one day's difficulty with the wi-fi and it was fixed as soon as we mentioned it. We didn't take a car and used buses to visit Stari Grad and Hvar Town but we loved Jelsa best. Jelsa is a functioning town, not only a tourist resort: it has a school, the houses have vegetable gardens, there are weddings in the church and working fisherman use the port. There are bars and restaurants, five supermarkets and other stalls, boats and bikes to hire, fantastic swimming in quiet bays, wonderful walks in the hills along the old roads, and (during the grape harvest) a heady smell of new wine. We don't actually want to encourage lots of other people to go there. We'd like to keep it for ourselves.

We love Captain Niko's House

This is a wonderful, quiet, unique place to stay in the beautiful town of Jelsa. Lada, the owner welcomed us with a host of traditional Hvar delicacies and made us feel at home right away. The air conditioned apartment is beautiful and combines the modern with the traditional in this family owned ancient mariners home. The downstairs courtyard is cool and peaceful in the heat of the day and the rooftop terrace is a special place to enjoy early evening drinks while watching the sun go down with the swallows performing their evening aerobatic rituals. Jelsa harbour is a delight with its many bars, restaurants and cafes but do not come here if you like all-inclusive, discos and partying. This is a much more sophisticated sort of place that would suit romantic couples and those whose children have left home. You can hire a motor boat for 50 euros a day, motor up to the charming Verboska for coffee, take a picnic and then lose yourself on a deserted beach or cove. The water is warm and clear and the snorkeling superb. Eating out is a treat too. Visit the Me & Mrs Jones restaurant on the far side of the harbour and the Dubokovic restaurant in Plitve, a 5 minute drive away up in the hills behind Jelsa. The welcome, food and sunset views here are out of this world. Return to Jelsa for a coffee and ice cream in the cafe on the corner of the square and just watch the beautiful people go by until bed time. Captain Niko's House and Jelsa are special places for special people.

Wonderful apartment in a stunning location

My boyfriend and I, a couple in our twenties, had the most perfect holiday at Captain Niko's and would highly recommend it. The apartment is situated at the heart of Jelsa in a beautiful courtyard, only a short walk from the nearest beach. It is spotlessly clean, comes with everything you need for your stay, and Lada couldn't do enough to help us. Jelsa is a small and very pretty town, with several supermarkets, markets, and lots of bars and restaurants. We hired a car to visit some of the other towns on the island - and found Jelsa to be the nicest! We will be recommending Captain Niko's to all of our friends and family.

Excellent apartment close to centre of Jelsa

This is one of the best places we have stayed. The apartment has everything you need and was clean and well maintained. It is located very close to the bustling centre of Jelsa but in a quieter part of the old town. It is opposite the church so you do hear the church bells occasionally but that didn't disturb us. The owner was very welcoming and friendly and happy to chat if we wanted to. There are 2 small supermarkets, fruit and vegetable market and a baker within 5 minutes walk of the house and several good restaurants and bars in the town - so everything you are likely to need is close by. We used the local beach quite a bit which is less than 10 minutes walk and there are also some lovely beaches slightly further away and we hired bikes to reach some of these. We chose to travel without a car which is perfectly feasible using the ferry from Split and the bus connection to Jelsa although you can hire a car for a day if you want to venture further afield. Hvar, and in particular Jelsa, is a gem of a place and we can recommend Captain Nikos house as a lovely place to stay

Perfect Get-Away!

Beautiful apartment - one of the nicest we have ever stayed in. Beautifully decorated, well equipped and nicely laid out. The landlady was very helpful and provided us with all the info we needed for our stay and onward journey. Excellent location although we didn't quite get used to the church bells. Would Definately recommend.
