About this property

Cooperage Cottage - Peaceful & Family Friendly, Oceanfront

Our quiet oceanfront Cooperage Cottage sits sheltered by tall oak, pine and spruce trees on five private acres of forest and salt marsh. The surrounding area is mostly summer cottages with some year-round residents. It is conveniently located 45 minutes from Halifax and it is close to Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg.

An oceanfront two story, south facing, fully equipped chalet-style house perfect for couples or families. Each level has a living area, bedroom and bathroom.

The upper level bedroom has a queen bed. The lower level bedroom has two extra long twin beds which can be placed together to make a king bed.

The galley kitchen is fully equipped including an induction stovetop, quartz countertop, wall oven, microwave oven and dishwasher.

There is a deck off the upper level living area. The lower level living area includes satellite TV, games, propane fireplace, and a heat pump (heating and cooling system).

There are two full bathrooms, one on each level. The washer & dryer are located in the lower level bathroom. Bathroom towels, beach towels, and linens are provided.

WIFI and BBQ are on site.

At the shoreline of the property you can see the ruins of an old working cooperage. A century ago, wooden barrels were built here for the fishing industry and Chester Basin was well known for its many cooperages. Here, chairs welcome you to enjoy the lovely island views and in the summer you will discover why this area is a popular boating destination. The water is accessible so maybe you prefer to go for a swim or rent a kayak.

One of the islands you can see from here is the legendary Oak Island which is famous for many theories of possible buried treasure. Treasure hunters have been searching for the past 150 years.

a week at Cooperage Cottage

We had a lovely time at this cottage. The managers are welcoming and friendly without pressure in any way. The cottage was super clean and had everything we needed. And my husband and I loved the board walk and poking around on the rocky beach!

Clean and Quiet Cabin By the Shore With Amazing Views!

We spent a week at the Cooperage Cottage and enjoyed it immensely! This delightful cabin is located on the waterfront and has beautiful views of Borgels Cove and Mahone Bay. We found the location to be perfect for visiting the area attractions. During our trip, we visited Lunenburg (30 minutes from the cabin), Peggy’s Cove (1 hour), Mahone Bay (20 minutes), Truro at the top of the Bay of Fundy (2 hours), Bachman’s Beach (40 minutes), Lightfoot and Wolfville Vineyards (1 hour), and Hall’s Harbour (30 minutes from Lightfoot and Wolfville Vineyards). At the shoreline of the property, there are two Adirondack chairs that sit in a small stand of trees. We found this spot to be especially peaceful and relaxing. We sat there a few times in the late afternoon reading books and searching for sea glass. It is a surprisingly good spot for collecting sea glass! The bed in the upstairs bedroom was quite small and felt more like a full-sized bed rather than a queen. We got used to it, though, and were able to make it work for us. This is not really drawback to the cabin—just a “you-may-want-to-consider”. Also, the kitchen is a little small as other reviews have pointed out, but it is very well equipped. We cooked several meals during our stay and had no issues with the tight space. We really enjoyed having the barbeque grill located on the back deck. We would definitely book this place again, and we highly recommend it for your stay. We had an amazing week!

A perfect seaside holiday location

Cooperage Cottage is an excellent property in a great location and we had another lovely stay. Explore the shore or just stay and relax... I highly recommend it. But I can't recommend ever booking any property with VRBO again. Hurricane Fiona caused an unexpected multi-day power outage at the cottage during our stay, and we had to move to a hotel. While the hosts graciously refunded their rental cost for those days, VRBO refused to refund the fees and taxes they collected, and as a result I lost several hundreds dollars.

We tore ourselves away.

Almost everything about our stay exceeded our expectations. The location of the cottage is utopia for those who long to connect, or re-connect, with Mother Nature. The cottage interior was left spotless for us by the Spechts and/or their cleaning staff; the furnishings are comfortable and nothing feels cheap, including the towels and bed linens. Yes, the kitchen space (not the appliances) is a challenge--if you wish to prepare elaborate meals, this may not be the place for you. My only disappointment was one the hosts have no control over: the noise of the traffic on the highway, though it is not close by, is ever-present. It was so out of keeping with the sense of privacy and sanctuary--but then, that's the world we live in. And you'll still hear the owls and the loons at night!

Relaxing stay by the ocean

Lovely, well appointed cottage. The two floors (each with own bathroom!) allows the kids their own space. Note, that the kitchen is very well equipped, but in quite a small space - good for one chef at a time!

Marvelous place!

I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful property. The house is beautiful and equipped with all your needs. Modern kitchen, large dining and lounge areas with comfortable furniture, nice bedrooms with comfy beds, and sizeable closets. Balconies have Adirondack chairs with comfortable cushions and a great view of the water. BBQ grill worked great. It is conveniently located for trips to surrounding attractions, including Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, as well as Chester. Wonderful host .who keeps the place spotless and comfortable. Would gladly stay here again.

A very comfortable base from which to explore the shore and see the sights. The view over the bay is stellar and the wildlife in the saltmarsh was a constant source of entertainment. Two thumbs up.

A perfect week

We had such a lovely stay, I can't say enough about it. From morning coffee on the balcony overlooking Chester basin, to afternoon dips in the ocean, to evening campfires, we didn't want to leave! The cottage was clean and beautiful with a pitcheresque view and an ideal location just minutes from downtown Chester. We couldn't have asked for a better stay! Out hosts were quick to return any messages and more than accommodating. I highly recommend staying and can't wait to come back next year!

Chester on the Sea am amazing place to Be

We arrived to this lovely spot and were thrilled with our choice! The cottage was immaculate and host responsive and attentive to our needs. We would absolutely recommend this location to anyone looking for a base in Nova Scotia and are hoping to book again sometime this year. We truly enjoyed our stay.

Perfection

That is what my husband said when we walked in. The cottage is quite lovely, with a wonderful ocean view and separated from neighbors. Close to so many things: great hikes, nice restaurants, terrific bike path (and the house comes with very nice bikes! with helmets!). Lots of light, comfortable chairs and beds, it was all terrific. Shelley left a bottle of Nova Scotia wine to greet us, was a great communicator. We were sorry we could not stay longer.

In spite of Dorian!

We had a terrific stay at Cooperage Cottage in spite of Hurricane Dorian. We arrived two days before the storm. The property owner, Shelley, and her husband, Merrill, informed us that the electricity was almost certain to go out during the storm and the cottage water supply uses an electric pump. They recommended that we go to a hotel for a couple of nights and offered to refund the nights that we were unable to stay in the cottage. After the nights in a hotel, the power was back and we returned. They had obviously spent a lot of time and effort cleaning up the outside storm damage - downed tree branches, leaves, etc. The cottage itself was very clean and comfortable. The view is terrific. The location is great for visiting locations on the South Shore... about equal distance from Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg. As you can see from the photograph on the listing, the kitchen is small, but it is very well appointed. Cooperage Cottage is a great find and we would definitely stay there again.

Nova Scotia Beauty

We had a wonderful time in this beautiful home. The house has everything one could need, all is super clean (10*) and everything in it is new or very well maintained. You can tell thus is also a family vacation home, not just some income property. The kitchen is small, but has everything and we made good use of it. The views and location were fantastic. Couldn’t be better. We launched our canoe directly from the beach in front of the house. The hosts are easy to deal with. All info and communication was provided in a timely manner. As a very special touch we were greeted with a bottle of wine and a handwritten card. Thank you so much for making our stay so comfortable and beautiful.

A home away from home.

Best place ever. Loads of property with mother nature all around us. The view of the ocean was awesome and we were able to get together with my whole family without ever feeling crowded. This is my new "best place to stay" when visiting the south shore of Nova Scotia. So close to everything yet far enough away to be quiet and relaxing. Loved everything about it.Ralph and Jill

Loved it!!

The cottage was fantastic! It had everything we wanted - waterfront, lots of space, a ton of amenities, and was very private but still close to town. Very relaxing. It was perfect for us and our 5 year old son and we hope to return next year for a longer stay.

Nova Scotia Paradise

The Cooperage Cottage is quite a find! Everything about it is special. Shelley was an excellent hostess, great communicator, and thought of all our needs ahead of time. The cottage is just as pictured or better, and unbelievably clean - everything looks and feels brand new. Waking up to the sounds of birds all around and then seeing that gorgeous ocean bay view from the living room and bedroom windows was superb! We all loved walking out on the boardwalk to the little "island" and exploring or just relaxing in the Adirondacks. We felt we had found a little slice of Nova Scotia paradise and never wanted to leave! The cottage is also perfectly situated for day trips to Halifax, Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg among other fun places. Thanks Shelley for sharing your amazing little place with us! We loved every minute we were there.

Wonderful week in Nova Scotia

Arrived at a spotless clean place with stunning view of the water. The location was very practical as it provides easy access to south shore area like Lunenburg and Peggy Cove as well as short drive to Halifax and Bay of Fundy. We liked the place so much that we decided to stay home the last day of vacation and just take in the view.

Fabulous, secluded spot by the sea

Stayed here for 4 nights in September. It has everything you need and is clean and well maintained. Very helpful owners and very quiet. The boardwalk out to the point is very handy as the point and beach are great places to sit. Grocery and liquor stores are about 10 minutes away in Chester or Lunenburg about 30 minutes away.

About the host

Hosted by Shelley Specht

Host profile image
I am a Bluenoser, born and raised in Nova Scotia. One of five siblings who spent our childhood summers at our parents cottage in Chester Basin where we developed a deep respect and love for the area. (Bluenoser is a nickname for Nova Scotians.)

Why they chose this property

Together my siblings & I purchased a cottage property nearby our childhood cottage and this is the rental listing. My sister (Karen) and I are the contacts for the listing. We love the area and we want others to enjoy all that Nova Scotia has to offer.

What makes this property unique

The house is very comfortable and quiet. Having a living area on each level is great for families or couples who would like some privacy.

The southeast facing oceanfront portion of our property was once a Cooperage many years ago. The building is gone now but the large stones of the fireplace remain. It's a gorgeous spot to spend time relaxing overlooking many of the islands in Mahone Bay.

The property is bordered on one edge by a salt marsh which is visited by a variety of birds. You may also see an occasional deer or two stroll by.
