About this property

PRIVATE BEACH with BIG VIEWS. Adjacent Art Studio

Everyone loves it here! Upon arrival, you enter an oasis of calm. Attention to artistry and comfort is experienced throughout this northeastern Michigan beach house with large windows that provide big views of Lake Huron. Offering a blend of cottage style with sophistication, we are a quiet retreat from the world with many areas to relax and read, sit and listen to the waves of our inland sea, play on the beach, or explore available local activities such as hiking, fishing, or kayaking on the AuSable River. What you will find here is a calm and peaceful natural experience, a comfortable place for some R&R and seasonal fun in the water.

Our private 150' Lake Huron frontage is ten minutes from the finish line of the annual International AuSable River Canoe Marathon in July. We're a half hour from Lumberman's Monument, and a few hours from famous Mackinaw Island. Many beautiful and reliable fishing spots and stellar golf courses are in the surrounding areas of Iosco and Alcona counties.

The rental house has a mid-century look and vibe. The main bedroom juts out on the beach and has amazing views of sunrise and moonrise over Lake Huron. There is an en suite bathroom, as well as an office/dressing room. The large living room has floor to ceiling windows and a sliding door that opens onto the beach patio. The second bedroom has twin beds and is adjacent to the second bathroom. The cottage style kitchen and dining area has a set of original mid-century Saarinen Tulip Table and chairs. The pantry/kitchen is stocked with spices and basic necessities. Behind the kitchen is a full utility room that exits to the garage where you will find flotation vests and kites. The kayaks and paddle board are kept on the beach. Feel free to use the Weber charcoal grill or the fire pit in the evenings! And don't hesitate to inquire about the ceramic studio.

We're on the US 23 Heritage Trail that travels along Lake Huron's coastline. There are numerous art fairs, antique stores and quilt shows up and down this Sunrise Side of Michigan. Drive up to Alpena an hour north and take a glass-bottom boat tour of the Thunder Bay shipwrecks, see the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, or visit the Besser Museum Planetarium.

If you like the arts, please review the workshops offered by Inspiration Alcona, a non-profit organization in Alcona County at www.inspirationalcona.org. They sponsor writers conferences and artist retreats at Lost Lake Woods in Lincoln MI, as well as outdoor concerts and film events. And only a few minutes away in Oscoda MI you can find the renowned Northeast Academy of Dance offering ballet, jazz and modern dance classes to local and international students. They put on two superb performances each year. The Nordic Sports store in Tawas has outdoor gear and keeps the Corsair Ski trails groomed. Visit their website for local weather conditions and hiking information for the Huron National Forest, and a schedule of their Bluegrass concert series.

Please be aware that this 1700 sq. ft. house is not child-proofed. It has breakable art inside and in the garden, and is not appropriate for children under the age of 5. There are some vintage art pieces that can be put away if needed to accommodate the 5-10 year olds, yet the mid-century coffee tables have definite corners as do the brick platforms for the gas fireplaces. We don't want to dissuade you from considering this property if you have older children --- however, let's dialogue about your needs, the safety of your family, and care of the property. Keeping lines of communication open are so important! Thank you!

Our property has a strict No Pets policy due to the fact that many guests are allergic to animals. Unfortunately we cannot accommodate any exceptions, even knowing that your pet doesn't shed and is well groomed and obedient. Thank you for understanding.

Refreshed and Renewed
Helen's home is unlike any other property in this area. Open, airy, and light, we felt more refreshed every morning. For the first time ever, I was disappointed I brought so many books- Helen has stocked her home with books ranging from typical Crichton-esque beach reads to poetry anthologies, design, young adult, and hardbound classics. I wish I would have read through so many more! The beach is smooth and the lake shallow enough to stay warm and play in all day. We will definitely be back!

Refreshed and Inspired
Just wonderful. Great beach for long walks, play, swimming, kayaking right from shore. Garage is loaded with fun outdoor/beach games. Beautiful natural landscape - and a real sense of peaceful seclusion. The house and design are highly nuanced and extremely comfortable (the VRBO photos aren’t able to convey how well curated and considered the full and open space is designed and outfitted): the art, a robust library of very interesting books, puzzles/games. Rejuvenating energy with all the openness, natural light and sound of the surf. Be sure to pay attention so you don’t miss anything. And Helen is fun too - warm and comfortable .

Wonderful stay on Lake Huron!
We so enjoyed our stay at Helen's property. Very unique. Cozy. Quiet Artful! home in a very secluded area. A few short steps to the beach! Very fun towns nearby. I hadn't been to this area before and we so enjoyed exploring the East coast of Michigan. Helen was very helpful and easy to reach, She met us with the keys as we came in and checked in again our last day on the beach to see how we liked the place. Unique fun place to stay!

We’ve been to this area many times and this has been our favorite beach. Pics just do not do this property justice. You go to sleep with the waves crashing and under the stars. Close to restaurants and tons of other things to do. WE HAD A BLAST!

The habitat we needed
We arrived early evening after a long drive and simply fell into an easy week of much needed rest and relaxation. Helen, our host, offers her lovely house right on a quiet beach and gives you as much space as you need - she’s kind, calm, generous and a special part of the whole experience. The house is so well stocked with amenities that there were no stresses - and a full-service grocery is within a few minutes drive south. More importantly, Helen hands you the schedule for local farmers markets throughout the week, and the fresh pierogis and tomatoes were our favorites. It’s a quiet retreat - for listening to the sparrows and the waves, for reading good books, bobbing in the water, and sleeping in. Enjoy!

Noble Huron indeed!
Truly one of the best vacations and VRBO experiences we’ve ever had! The setting is picturesque and the cottage aesthetics are off the chart! This charming cottage on the shores of Lake Huron is the perfect setting, only to be upstaged by all the artwork on the property. Helen is the most gracious and beautiful host, whose warmth embraces you from the moment you arrive. Lake Huron is only a few feet away and just as amazing as the photos. Kayaking daily was a highlight as the water is crystal clear. Dinners on the patio and nightly bonfires made for the most relaxing vacation. We can’t wait to return! Truly a place to unplug and find peace. The Nicolaus’

Perfect Slice of Serenity on Huron
My husband and I stayed at this serene and beautiful cottage as part of our anniversary vacation. It is much larger and nicer than the pictures show. One of the cleanest, if not The Cleanest VRBO we've stayed at (10+). The views from the cottage are wonderful and the sound of the surf on the beach is the ultimate relaxation aid. We enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and even the sunset hours provided a pink-ish glow in the sky over the water. The beach itself is ultimate perfection. Large and wide swath of sugar sand, plenty of shells and rocks to collect, privacy and solitude. The towels and linens at the cottage are high-end and luxurious. Which we appreciated very much. The bed is also very comfortable. There are numerous throw pillows and throws on many of the chairs, allowing you to make the spot your personal nest of comfort. We loved being disconnected here. Although there is WIFI, there is no TV; or even clocks anywhere. Since my husband and I don't have cell phones there were times where we didn't know what time it was. We depended on our bodies to tell us when to get up, eat, nap, spend time on the beach, et cetera. Which might be a once-in-a-lifetime thing in this day and age! Helen is a lovely person and super-accommodating. Don't be afraid to reach out to her with special requests or concerns. She was very prompt and thorough in all her communication with us. We highly recommend this cottage as the perfect place to unwind. Thank you, Helen, for your hospitality and thoughtfulness! YHWH Bless You : ) Mrs. David Schwartz

Front row seat to nature at its finest!
We had an amazing week at this lovely house! The star attraction was nature, the colorful, quickly changing colors of the sky and water, and taking long walks along the beach. The house is enchanting with everything you need plus a fabulous, eclectic collection of art. We can't thank Helen, the property owner, enough for making this gem available!

Beyond our wildest expectations!
The description of the property is detailed and accurate, but seeing it for ourselves, we were blown away. The home is much bigger than we expected with wonderful surprises left all over the property by Helen. We enjoyed all of her art that is throughout the garden and in the home. She has a spectacular eye for detail and quality. For example, the sheets, blankets, mattresses, and pillows are high quality and comfortable. The kitchen is well appointed with beautiful barware and everything you'd need to prepare a lovely meal. Helen thinks of everything you might need like distilled water to drink, your first bundle of firewood and lighters, charcoal for the grill, beach towels, chairs, toys, extra sweatshirts for the unexpected cooler days, plenty of games in great shape, and loads of fascinating books for when it rains. Honestly, the best part about the visit was Helen. She is a marvelous host. Attentive when you need her, but gives you plenty of space to enjoy. She gave us loads of tips on where to shop and what to do. We miss her and can't wait to return. Thank you, Helen for the most wonderful vacation. Our only regret is that it wasn't longer.

Beautiful Lake Views and Relaxation!
My family loved our stay here...the house is so clean, thoughtfully appointed, and overall really relaxing. The views of Lake Huron are simply spectacular. We have never stayed so close to the lake prior to this visit--you can hear the waves at night...they literally lull you to sleep! It rained during our stay but Helen was so helpful to point us in the direction of Tawas for some shopping--her tips provided a lovely itinerary and we had a great time. The sun came out for our last day and our girls enjoyed kayaking, walking along the shoreline, and simply digging in the sand. We have never experienced such tranquility and privacy on a beach--simply fantastic. Helen's home is so peaceful with her beautiful ceramic pieces throughout. Our evenings were filled with reading, playing games, and SLOWING DOWN to just sit and be with one another. We were able to prepare all of our meals at the house and enjoyed the thoughtful touches that made cooking super easy and enjoyable. Helen, thank you. Your beautiful, unique home and hospitality provided us with just the relaxation we needed to reconnect after a trying, difficult year! We hope to come back next summer!

Perfect Trip!
Walking into the house, the photos don't do it justice. So well decorated - the host has a great eye! Beautiful textiles, great midcentury furnishings with modern updates like bedding. The beach is beautiful and you could walk for hours along the shore. Great little shops around Greenbush, Oscoda, and Tawas. It rained pretty much the entire time we were there but the lake was still wonderful and the cabin was well appointed with interesting books and games. Definitely hit up Wellmans for smoked fish and their whitefish dip is incredible.

Our adult family of four truly enjoyed staying here. The property has lots of nice spaces -- fire ring, sandy beach, hanging swing, garden, patio, etc -- with lovely special touches all around. The house itself was also lovely with appealing decor and artwork and great views of the water. Strongly recommend this for a quiet, relaxing time by the water.

Relaxing, confortable, clean accomodations, great host
We had two adults, and a 9 year old and 13 year old (male) kids. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Helen is a gracious host, available when needed, but allowed us to have the multiple quiet days we needed. We both work with the public and as a result were looking for solitude and minimal interaction with anyone outside our family. We did two short excursions....Oscoda Canoe Livery and trip down the AuSable which we really liked. In addition the kids fished the AuSable in Oscoda behind Wellmans which was also fun. The property is great value for the money, the beach pristine, water clear. Helen has plenty of beach toys for the kids to entertain themselves. We did not need half the water toys we brought with us as there are plenty there. The house is nicely stocked with paper products which helped us as we had forgotten to bring much in our rush to get there! I highly recommend the property and Helen if you are looking to get away in a beautiful location on the water. Amazing sunrises every day!

Beautiful, quiet beach stay
The whole family loved this place (even the teenage daughters). Great cottage feel and beautifully decorated. The place was perfectly clean. Wonderful private beach with crystal clear water. I grew up going to Lake Michigan in the summers, but the water and quiet atmosphere of Lake Huron is my destination now. Our host was beyond charming and made sure everything was taken care of. I really can't say enough about this place. We'll be back for sure.

A wonderful place for a relaxing getaway
We stayed at the cottage for 9 nights and had a wonderful time. The surroundings with the private beach on Lake Huron are outstanding. Helen's unique artwork in the garden sets it apart even more. The cottage fulfills all the promises with a very warm and stylish interior. And waking up with a view of Lake Huron from the bed is spectacular. If you are looking to wind down and relax it is the ideal place! We'll definitely come back again.

About the host

Hosted by Helen Hierta

Host profile image
We feel so grateful to live in this area of northern Michigan, to enjoy year 'round amazing weather and views of Lake Huron. This is truly an inspiring retreat from the world! As a ceramic artist, I'm fortunate to have my art studio next to one of the world's five largest inland seas. If you are interested in clay, sculpting, wheel work or hand building, just let me know. I teach privates, workshops, and sometimes host birthday parties. Many of my sculptures are on the property, and have been exhibited in national galleries.

I love to see families enjoying the beach and toys. This is a safe haven from the world, a place to relax and renew. Please see many more photos of this property @noblehuron on Instagram, or my art @helenhiertaceramics

Why they chose this property

WHAT SETS THIS PROPERTY APART FROM OTHERS? We have 150' of private beach! The rental house is large and comfortable with big windows and expansive views. Across the way is a lovely flower garden, sculptures everywhere, and wherever you find yourself on the property there are beautiful views of Lake Huron.

A guest in 2019 wasn't able to submit his review to VRBO before the 14 days review allowance ended, yet he wanted you to know this: "My family and several good friends enjoyed our week-long stay at Helen’s property on Lake Huron last summer.  The understated mid-century décor and quiet surroundings put us at our ease and fostered a very relaxing and peaceful visit.  It was a great antidote to our normally hectic lives. We enjoyed reading, playing games, cooking, napping, kayaking, taking pictures, swimming, an open outdoor fireplace, guitar playing,  exploring nearby State Parks for day hikes, canoeing on the Au Sable River, etc.  The lake was very high last summer, and the dock was partly awash, but didn’t diminish our enjoyment of the sandy beach and shoreline.  Helen was attentive but unobtrusive, a great host."

A BIT OF HISTORY: the property has been in my family for 50 years. It was originally run as a vacation resort called "Cherokee Trails" by my stepdad, a Detroit auto designer, who purchased three beach lots as an adult. Over the years two of the lots were sold, and some of the original guest cottages were combined into single structures. When the opportunity arose to repurchase one of the lots, we did so. There are now two adjacent properties that total two acres with 150' of private beach. I live on one property that also has my ceramic art studio. The other property, separated by numerous trees and a large flower/sculpture garden, showcases the 1700 sq. ft beach rental house.

What makes this property unique

The sky is always changing, the water reflects the moods of the seasons, and the shoreline goes from dramatic to calm within hours. It's never boring here. There is a large sandy beach as well as a natural ecosystem. One summer we had a kildeer nest. Deer, fox, pileated woodpeckers, heron, owls, eagles, terns ... it is naturally perfect here. Quiet, private and laid back.
