Beyond an old iron gate, a private south-facing courtyard offers shade from its trees to arriving soujourners. The murmur of water that runs in an old stone tank coaxes guests into the main salon of a centuries-old village house - a restored wine cellar where people used to bring their grapes to turn into wine. This alchemic spirit still lives in the house. Inside, ancestral furniture is mixed with modern pieces, making for contemporary functionality while keeping the integrity of the place alive. The living-room opens out onto a cozy porch on the north side of the house. The Sun beams play upon the natural stone and wood structure, casting shadows at different hours of the day. The outdoor surrounds are inviting as the quaint interior. You can see the ever changing Sintra mountains in the distance. One can find inspiration in the somewhat monastic and contemplative atmosphere of the space.

The property is charming and comfortable. It’s in a wonderful area and an easy drive to Sintra and the whole region (we visited Obidos, Cascais, etc). The hostess is immediately nearby and was available for every question. She was extremely gracious and helpful. We loved it!
We stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of our Portugal vacation. The home was very comfortable and well situated for day trips to Sintra, Cascais, and other surrounding areas, and the garden and patio outside were a pleasant retreat from the tourist spots we visited. There are supermarkets nearby with everything we needed during our stay.
Peaceful and colourful oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Sintra sites. Easy access by train to Lisbon and Cascais and the small rural community of Colares.
Beautiful gardens to enjoy in front and back, spacious rooms. Close to many sites, yet not in the city. Grocery store close however a but car is required. Hosts were very gracious and close by. Library, piano and harp adorn this stone decor. Truly worth the stay.
We had 2 weeks enjoyable weeks here, despite the rain, and appreciated the space , the fireplace, the washer and dryer( rare in Europe) and our host. A car is essential as the village has no amenities.
The property is lovely and the host was great and even the location was away from typical tourist areas.
I love the idea of preserving history and this house has done that perfectly. I also believe you can preserve a lovely home and still provide fresh atmosphere and updated furniture. Unfortunately there was no where we felt comfortable sitting - between the musty smell and the extremely old/ uncomfortable couches and chairs - really that ruined it for us.
Some people maybe okay with the musty smell and enjoy the older feeling home.
We really enjoyed this home. It oozes atmosphere and comfort and was a pleasure to spend time in. The garden is a tranquil retreat. It is located in a lovely area convenient to the local villages and to Sintra. The information provided on local restaurants, supermarkets etc is comprehensive and we would not have discovered them on our own. We had our own car. Sofia is a terrific host.
What an absolute gem this place is.The photos speak for themselves; the house and gardens really are as beautiful as they look. it's like having your own private botanical garden for 4 days. The work that has clearly gone in to them is mightily impressive and was greatly appreciated.
Sofia is lovely. There was not a booking either side of our arrival and departure dates so she was very flexible with check in and out which we really appreciated.
Truly a remarkable stay. Sofia has done an amazing job inside and out of this historic home. It is evident throughout that she has a special eye for how elements and color can work together. Very unique. Extremely relaxing. A great find for sure. The colorful blooming landscape variety all around the house was a particularly nice treat. We felt like we were hanging out in a private arboretum. Bonus points for that!
It’s perfectly located about halfway between Sintra and the beach communities to the west. Short drives.
Fantastic host too. We loved it all!
We had a lovely stay in Sofia’s place. Good communication and responsive to all our needs and questions. The house itself is a Portugese gem, very stylish furnished and all kinds of sitting areas to hang out. The outside areas we did not use at all since the weather was not that great, but I can imagine it will be just as comfortable in the summertime. We were very happy with the fireplace which we used almost every evening.
The only downside of this location was the neighbors dog which barked a lot. It is really sad to see how the Portugese handle their dogs, I would bark all day to draw some attention.
But overall we had a very satisfying stay! Thanks again Sofia!
A very nice house in a village outside of Lisbon near Sintra. The house was very clean, with 2 good size bedrooms downstairs and one upstairs. The lounge area was very comfortable. The kitchen is a bit small but had everything we needed. The key feature of the house is that its cool. Even in April it was quite hot outside so it is a bit of an oasis inside, particularly if coming back from the city. The village has a couple of restaurants but no shops so its 5 mins by car to the nearest small supermarket. A car is essential for the area anyway. Our host Sofia lives next door and was super helpful and speaks good English, as does everyone in fact. Theres parking directly outside the house and its about 35 mins drive from the airport so pretty handy really. And you can drive to the beach in less than 10 mins. So all in all a very pleasant stay.
If you really study the images for this listing you know it’s a special place. Sofia has imbued her home with wonderful art and furnishings that will make you feel at home. There are a couple of marvelous outdoor spaces with a profusion of landscaping. Sofia and her husband are next door so readily available if you need anything.
Nafarros is the neighborhood you are in so you are close to Sintra which has a wealth of historical sights and Lisbon is an easy 40 minute train ride for all there is to see there. Going west from the rental there are lots of beaches and small villages to explore. You hardly have time to enjoy Sofia’s place!
Our family of four truly loved staying at historic Stone & Cal. The home was comfortable and had everything we needed for our 8-day stay. We especially loved the outdoor areas and spent lots of time relaxing in both the front courtyard and in the rear seating area overlooking Sofia's lovely yard. Sofia is such a gracious host and we enjoyed getting to know her. She was very responsive to our needs and her extra touches ensured that we had all that we needed for a great visit. The location of the home is very convenient to all the sights in Sintra (we suggest taking an Uber to avoid the frustration of driving and parking in congested Sintra) plus very near a number of gorgeous beaches. Colares is a nice stop for groceries, a brewery, etc. We also appreciated the daily outdoor visits from the neighbor's sweet orange cat and viewing Sofia's chickens from a distance. Thank you, Sofia, for the care you take in ensuring that your guests are well taken care of and happy! You helped make our vacation memorable!
This spacious, thoughtful accommodation was perfect for our family reunion. Sofia is a gracious, available host. We found this property to be stunningly beautiful with incredible views, and the perfect spot for our trip of 4-5 days - you can easily access any point of interest for sightseeing or the less-touristy attractions as well. Simply gorgeous! We highly recommend this property and host :)
