About this property

The Castle Bothy, self-catering accommodation next to historic Auchindoun Castle

The ‘ Castle Bothy’ is a luxury holiday apartment created out of the old stone barns (‘steading’) at former Parkhead Farm. It sits high on a hill overlooking Glen Fiddich and the heather covered slopes of The Cabrach moor, just 200m from the impressive 550 year old ruins of one of Scotland’s most iconic hilltop fortresses.

The property is a little unusual in that it has a bright open plan living space, including the kitchen and dining areas, located at first floor level above the bedrooms and bathrooms on the ground floor.

There are wonderful elevated views of the castle through the large windows, and an external timber stair that leads down into the small wild flower garden. When the ‘Northern Lights’ (Aurora Borealis) come out to play this is an exceptional viewpoint from which to experience them.

It is ideal for a couple but can accommodate up to 4 people. For larger groups it can be rented in conjunction with a similar cottage next door - ‘The Castle Byre’ (subject to availability, see separate combined listing for a discounted rate).

The beds in the main bedroom can be pre-configured as twin 3’ singles or zip linked as a Super King size double according to your stated preference. The second (smaller) bedroom has a standard (4’6” wide) double bed.

Underfloor heating throughout the ground floor and radiators at first floor level make this a very cosy little house.

The Area:

From castles to whisky, hilltops to coast, this is an exceptional area of Scotland that encompasses the best of history, hospitality and modern adventure. Principle leisure activities are hiking, cycling, fishing and golf.

The nearest town is Dufftown, two miles away and with six distilleries it is the 'Malt Whisky Capital of the World'. Here there is a range of well stocked grocery stores and places to eat, from restaurants to take-away.

Popular local events that attract people from all over the UK and around the world include:
The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, end of April & beginning of May.
The Moray Walking & Outdoor Festival, mid.June.
The Dufftown Highland Games, last Saturday in July.
North East Open Studios, mid.September
The Dramathon, mid. October

Just 15 miles north lies the world class Moray Firth coastline, with miles of sandy beaches, interesting and picturesque small fishing ports, forests and cliffs. It is one of the best places in the UK to get the chance of seeing dolphins and whales, with boat trips available.

To the east the countryside rolls in to Aberdeenshire with more castles, including Balmoral in Royal Deeside, and Aberdeen (‘The Granite City’), the third largest in Scotland with its restaurants, art galleries, parks and shopping centres.

A few miles to the south is the Cairngorms National Park, the largest and wildest in the UK with a wide range of organised leisure activities, and west lies Inverness, gateway to Loch Ness, the West Coast and the North Scottish Highlands.

The heather blooms from July to September (thought this is dependent on the weather).

From ensuring the accommodation meets the expected standard to providing detailed knowledge and guidance to make best of your time, we are committed to helping you have an exceptional experience.

Short break away after attending wedding nearby
We had the most relaxing and enjoyable stay in The Bothy. It was a real home from home for us, very comfortable and extremely well maintained and stocked. Lots of little added extras to make this a very special place. We hope to visit again in the future.

Lovely comfortable accommodation with stunning views
The Bothy is a lovely relaxing place to stay. It has everything you need for a holiday including whisky and the local delicacies called butteries. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and restful and even has a castle which is a great place to sit and take in the views. Whether you want to just chill or go exploring the area there is something for everyone. Colin and Penny, the hosts, are very helpful especially with recommending places to visit in the local area and are always on hand if there are any issues with the accommodation This is the second time we have stayed and will certainly be going back

Our stay near Dufftown
We had a great stay in this secluded property. It was very quiet and peaceful. Everything was as expected except the clothes washing and drying machine which was not what we are used to but we did get all of our clothes cleaned and dryed. Colin and Penny were very nice and right on property. We would love to go back.

The property was perfect. The location was stunning although not too far from local amenities. The facilities in the property were excellent with everything needed for a break whether exploring the local eateries or cooking in the apartment. The bedrooms were lovely with beautiful views and the bathroom spacious with an excellent shower and bath. The owners were very friendly and welcoming. I would definitely recommend a stay at this property. I certainly will be going back

A wonderful holiday in Scotland
We had a wonderful holiday in that cosy holidayflat, which was very tastefully and individually furnished. Everything was of the best quality. When we arrived we got a warm welcome. We found nice little things for a typical scottish breakfast in the kitchen, flowers and a lot of good tips of every kind and for all interests. It was very clean. We were helped whenever we had a question.

Wonderful
We had a wonderful stay! Such a beautiful home and setting. Colin greeted us on arrival making us feel welcome in the very clean, cozy, comfortable and nicely decorated home. Throughout the space Colin and Penny took great thought and care to ensure we felt welcome, providing many extras including whiskey and lovely shortbread cookies, robes and slippers! The view of the castle was lovely, the hillside scattered with sheep and cattle added to the idyllic stay. We were delighted with our time and so appreciative of the hospitality. Thank you Colin and Penny.

Rural Beauty
The property is unique in that it is so close to the ruins of a castle that you can see it from the window and take a short walk to view it. It is quite isolated, which was perfect for us and we just drank in the beautiful surroundings. Colin and Penny were excellent hosts and provided us with delicious local specialty called a "buttery" along with some butter and jam. They were friendly and gracious and left us with good detailed instructions regarding dos and don'ts. The space itself is as advertised - small but very well appointed. We would love to return for a longer stay to explore the area on foot more!

Stay with Colin and Penny
It was just amazing to stay at Bothy Castle in the beautiful surroundings of Speyside / Dufftown. Colin shared with us a very friendly and warm welcome and our group enjoyed very much the cozy and spotless apartment. We immediately felt like being home and even one day of heavy rain could not dim at all our feeling of wellbeing - on the contrary: we took advantage of spending one day "home" in this comfortable apartment (and of the offered local whisky :-)). Thank you so much, dear both! Going to almost the end of the worls is definitely wort it !! Caroline, Andreas, Patrick and Kerstin

Loved loved loved it!!!!
The setting was absolutely incredible - where else can you go to have a castle close by - right out your window. The hills were beautiful and the wild flower garden right outside was so pretty too. The bothy was super clean and comfortable and the hosts provided everything we needed. Peaceful, private and relaxing.

Awesome Place
I've stayed in a lot of VRBO property's over the years and this is by far one of the best. Well designed and appointed, with awesome views and close proximity to a great deal of great places to visit! Colin and Penny are awesome hosts and are a wealth of knowledge about the local area as well as Scottish history.....can't recommend their place enough. If you love Scotland as I do, this is a must do location. The Bothy is very comfortable, the right size for two to four and has everything needed for a very comfortable stay. I love to cook and it has everything needed to be at home in the kitchen. The beds are very comfortable, as well as a great living space and bathroom. I was impressed with the detail and care put into this place. There are many venue's within a couple of minutes to a couple of hours from here that are well worth the time spent. Stay, go, see and do....and enjoy! You won't regret the decision made or money spent!

As good as one could expect of a rental property.
With two bedrooms and bathroom downstairs, the living room is on the first floor which offers a wonderful view from the balcony - peaceful, serene green rolling hills (with cows and sheep) looking up to 1500 Castle Auchindoun. One could not have asked for a better setting to unwind. The accommodation is well designed, in excellent decorative order, sparkling clean, and provides everything one could hope for and more. I would not want to change anything. On arrival, we found everything we need for the following morning including tea/ coffee (standard & decaffinated), milk, biscuits, butter, Malted Brown Multi Seeded loaf (rather than a plain white loaf) and even a bottle of Virgin Olive Oil ! All the toiletry are also there, bath towels, hairdryer. For the drinker, there is a bottle of Malt Whiskey. Essentially, one does not need to bring anything except one's personal clothing - and even dressing gowns are provided. It just goes to show how thoughtful the hosts are. I would go to say Colin and Penny represent the "model hosts" ! They respond to any "pre-arrival" queries within 24 hours; well documented directions and arrival instructions. The leaflets and printed information provided were also very informative. Upon arrival, Colin & Penny were there whenever we wish to raise an issue, take benefit of their local knowledge or simply to have a friendly chat ! We did have a good chat because we "pre-retirement professional interests." However, Colin and Penny know where to draw the line and leave us "in peace" and have never knocked on our door during our one week stay. I can go on .... We will certainly stay with Colin and Penny when we visit that part of Scotland. I have no hesitation at all to recommend their holiday accommodation.

Just the perfect bolthole
Lovely warm welcome - we really valued knowing in advance what would be in the fridge etc, ready to use, when we arrived, too. A particularly comfortable, big bed ensured a good night’s sleep. Very well equipped and designed accommodation - even exceeding expectations. Very friendly, helpful hosts: appreciated more than ever in these strange times! Wonderful setting if you like landscape and photogenic views as much as we do. Recommend wholeheartedly - we hope to return, with like-minded friends.

Excellent attention to detail. Perfect location. Beautiful views!
The cottage is excellent. Tastefully decorated, a lot of tiny detail which makes it feel homely (tissues, robes, slippers, shortbread, tea, coffee, milk, etc). The views were breathtaking in all weathers. Walking to the castle is a must, such a great place. The hosts (Colin and Penny) were great. Nothing was too much bother. Such a friendly couple. Thank you both for everything. The location of the cottage was also perfect for us as we like to drive out to the coast as well as have days in towns. There’s a full functioning and well equipped kitchen for those who need it. Bed was comfy. Would highly recommend for a highland getaway.

Superb
Our stay at the Bothy Castle was everything we had hoped and more. From the initial booking through to leaving the property, communication with Colin and Penny was excellent. We were afforded a friendly welcome when we arrived and were wowed at the size of the bothy, with a very good layout allowing us to eat in on each night of our stay. The property was superbly appointed, spotlessly clean and had a very modern/new feel about it. Even the smart tv had been configured so that access was easy to bbc iplayer! It was superbly situated for a very relaxing Stay with walks on to it doorstep and short drives to other towns close by. Colin and Penny were extremely friendly and helpful during our stay without being overbearing and could offer advice on a range of places to eat and visit. It was a perfect getaway and we would highly recommend to other couples and families. Superb!

The Bothy - August 2020
The Bothy is set in a beautiful location among rolling hills and overlooking the ruins of Auchindoun Castle. It is incredibly peaceful and calm up there and a great antidote to City life. The cottage is cosy and very comfortable, and a great place to bed down for the week and relax. The owners, Colin and Penny, have clearly given a lot of thought to what someone staying there might need, and the cottage is very well equipped and has everything you need. The decor is done to a high standard throughout, with a modern bathroom with excellent shower pressure. The master bedroom is very comfortable and it was a joy to wake up, open the curtains and see the view of the castle from your bed. Colin and Penny were excellent hosts: charming, respectful and extremely helpful. The internet briefly went down as a result of a heavy storm one night and Colin was there the following morning to fix it. He also immediately replaced the coffee machine when a minor issue arose. And he has a fantastic knowledge of the local area and of whisky (including its history), so can point you to the best distilleries! I cannot recommend The Bothy highly enough. It exceeded all of our expectations - including the photos on the site, which do not do it justice, in our view - and we would love to go back some time.
