About this property

Central Bar Harbor. Family and pet friendly

Central Bar Harbor one block from Shore Path and Village Green.
Arbor House is one of two charming, attached houses which comprise Derby Lane Cottages (Stork's Nest, 4 br, 2ba is a separate listing). It has its own entrance, porch and private yard. It is just steps to restaurants and shops and a short walk to the free Island Explorer bus with service for all of Acadia National Park. One the best locations in Bar Harbor.
We do all the cleaning and maintenance ourselves and live nearby year round.
Non-smoking property. Pets may be allowed. This house is over 150 years old and does not have AC but the proximity to the ocean typically keeps the whole neighborhood cool.

Great Bar Harbor location

Chose this property for its location, which allowed our two tween/teen kids to have some independence in town, and it was perfect. Loved being able to bring our dog too, and the fenced backyard was a favorite hangout spot for all of us. The beds were very comfortable, which isn’t always the case in a rental.

Great location!

We had the best time staying here. The location couldn’t be better. We had music playing right around the corner everyday. It was easy to walk to any location in the village. The best part was the convenience for the dogs. There was a great little fenced in back yard that my dogs loved. The only issue is the bathroom is on the second floor. The only problem with that is the stairs are steep. Could be difficult for an older person. Would definitely stay again in a heartbeat!

Cozy cottage

This property was a great location to enjoy Bar Harbor. The home was immaculately clean. We enjoyed spending time on the front patio and the private back yard. Would stay here again.

Convenient location

Great location if you want to be downtown Bar Harbor. Walk to shopping, eating and easy access to the bus or to drive into Acadia National Park. House was adequate. Took us a couple days to get used to the noise as the front of the house is only the driveways distance apart from a restaurants outdoor dining, and live music. Biggest complaint is the poor quality twin mattresses which made for bad sleeping for my kids. The fact that it is dog friendly made our vacation so much better. The backyard is fenced in, has a nice patio and much quieter than the front. Easy place to relax after hiking the mountains.

Location, location, location!

Just returned from a week-long winter stay at Arbor House, and it was just great. The location is perfect - steps away from the main street shopping area; a 10 minute walk to the grocery store; an easy, 1.5 mile walk to the entrance of Acadia (accessible only in limited areas during the winter months). Despite it's proximity to the stores and restaurants of B.H., the house feels very private: You're not aware of the activity outside your windows unless you actually look for it. The house was bright and spotlessly clean when we arrived. And toasty warm! (This won't matter much to summer visitors, but off-seson guests will appreciate the many baseboard heaters and responsive thermostats.) Downstairs is an open floor plan of living room/dining room/kitchen. A comfy couch and some not-so-comfy wicker chairs are available for t.v. watching and socializing. (The t.v. could be bigger - it's pretty small.) A DVD player and VCR are available. A nice farmhouse-style table and chairs comprise the dinining area. The kitchen is bright, cheery, and *pretty well* stocked for cooking. More on that in a moment. Upstairs (Note: The staircase is quite steep and the risers are narrow ) you'll find the master bedroom with a full-size bed, and a second bedroom with 2 twin beds. There is tons of closet space and plenty of hangers (in addition to chests of drawers), so no need to live out of your suitcase. The bathroom has super-capacity washer+dryer in it. There is an awesome shower! Nothing fancy about it, but it has a heavy, forceful spray and plenty of hot water. Perfect for tired hikers/bikers/skiiers! We don't eat in restaurants, so having a well-equipped kitchen is a huge plus for us. This kitchen lacks a couple of "basics" such a good cutting board and some sharp knives (there are plenty of "Ginsu" type knives, but if you cook, you know these are worthless....) The stove is a very old electric model - charming to look at, but the burners are uneven and wobbly so pans don't sit flat on them. Kind of annoying if you're cooking pancakes, etc. There was a decent selection of pots/pans, plenty of cutlery and dinnerware. Fridge, micro, and toaster are just fine. My gripes with this property are minor and limited to the small TV and the kitchen issues mentoned above. I can easily recommend Arbor House, and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Clean, comfortable, good value, excellent location.

Awesome!!!!

Many thanks to the owners for letting us bring our furry kids, which truly increased the quality of our vacation. This was our first trip to Maine and we stayed both in Bar Harbor and Booth Bay. The description of the property and pictures provided actually did not give a completely accurate description, because it is MUCH BETTER!!! Literally downtown Bar Harbor is a step away, yet the adjacent property and foliage leave you feeling miles away from it all! My husband enjoyed many naps on the front porch in the mid-afternoon in this little town filled with Cruise activity. The living space is actually much larger than the photos might indicate. It was very clean and well maintained. Traveling with a special needs animal, who will find the dust, there was no dust to be found. The house was extremely clean and very welcoming :-) When I had a question and e-mailed the owners, I had a quick response! My husband and I often rent cottages while traveling and I have never felt so compelled to write a review, that is how much we loved it!! Clear instructions were sent to us on access, the owners were quick to respond, we loved the property, the location is amazing. Tips for those looking to enjoy Acadia as much as we did: Skip the Great Meadow Loop Trail. It is really just a walk around a golf course. Don't miss the hike around Jordan Pond or a trip to Cadillac Mountain. Jordan Pond is listed as a Moderate hike, but there is only a short bit of walking/climbing around rock formations. We passed many healthy 60-70 year olds enjoying it. If you can't hike to Cadillac Mountain, drive up and walk around the rock formations there, and walk a bit of a trail! If you are a moderate hiker, don't miss Great Head. Walk out onto Sand Beach and head left. Little more climbing on this one, but well worth the views!! For fast access, head south through Otter Creek and enter the park there. Park Loop Road is one way through much of the Park, and this makes for much quicker access to Jordan Pond, Cadillac Mountain, and the Stables. We plan on enjoying more of our National Parks in the future, but if you look to Bar Harbor, this is an awesome place to stay and we hope to be back!!

Arbor House on Derby Lane

We spent a week at Arbor House on Derby Lane in May 2012. It’s in a superb location allowing us to walk everywhere in town. The cottage is nicely furnished and although we didn’t cook we could have, as the kitchen is well equipped. The two bedroom, one bath cottage is also comfortable and roomy, especially for two adults. Arbor house is a very short walk to Main Street. When we first arrived I feared evenings might be noisy especially since we were there for Memorial Day weekend. But our nights at the cottage were quiet and we slept quite well. We traveled with two dogs and both were welcome at Arbor House. We were also grateful for the grassy areas around the cottage for early morning and before bed bathroom calls. Maine is especially dog friendly as our two were frequently invited into shops, and Bar Harbor was no exception. Dog friendly inns, hotels, and rentals houses are especially interesting for us, and I think this is a growing trend across the US. Arbor house met our dog needs quite well. JR and Courtney are wonderful “landlords” and left information in our cottage. We followed their advice and enjoyed some topnotch restaurants. We had one issue with Wi-Fi, but it was the server that was malfunctioning. JR made some calls to confirm the issue and visited the cottages to ensure that our connection was working. This was a minor inconvenience, and not a long lasting one, and the cottage Wi-Fi worked well. Arbor House is a wonderful cottage and we loved Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Barbara

Comfy, Quaint, and in the Heart of Bar Harbor

What a memorable vacation! Our stay at Arbor House with our Labrador and two Yorkies was...perfect. The home was clean and well maintained and its location--just one block from the heart of downtown Bar Harbor--was so convenient. Scenic walks along the harbor shore were only a few blocks away, and sunny afternoons spent sitting and reading on the comfy front porch pups was so relaxing for us and our sleepy pups. The proprietors even provided great restaurant recommendations--a nice touch. We seldom write recommendations, but this experience was just so great ...

Arbor makes Bar Harbor even better!

We occupied the Arbor House for 3 weeks and that wasn't enough!! The house is in the BEST location in downtown BH, close to the water, all restaurants, shops, bars, parks, great running routes. Not having a car didn't at all present a problem, even for trips to the grocery store (about .5 miles away). The house has it all, and if it doesn't, JR or Courtney will have it on your porch by the time you return from hiking! The layout is great and very conducive to cooking, entertaining (inside the dining area or out back in the yard). The front porch was my favorite for reading or journaling (of course with a glass of wine from a bottle purchased at the cute, local wine store right around the corner!!). I can't say enough good things about Arbor House and its owners. A few weeks after I left, my friend and her family (husband, 3 kids) stayed a week at Arbor and they all loved it and were totally comfortable. Great places for dinner - Side Street Cafe, (upstairs and outside at) Parkidse Grill, Gringo's (fresh, mexican take-out), but my favorite might have been cooking many awesome dinners at the Arbor House with different close friends and family. The kitchen is cozy and fun to cook in, or the grill out back was great too. In the mood for some good coffee/lattes?...try Trailhead Cafe (Cottage St.) or The Opera House (aka 'Internet Cafe)..the people who work there are so nice and it's fun to hang and play a game of scrabble if you're stuck inside due to bad weather or just want to chill. You HAVE to get a Blueberry soft serve cone from CJ's Big Dipper (again, right around the corner from Arbor). Try to walk the Shore Path daily, it's sooo beautiful and relaxing, and sooo close! Not one day went by (in my more than 3 weeks in Bar Harbor) that there wasn't something different to do (I never repeated one thing). Between biking the roads or carriage trails of Acadia National Park, hiking the many mountain trails, kayaking on the bay, visiting the different harbor towns and villages on the island, taking a boat tour, and so much more - one can never run out of things to do in Bar Harbor. It can satisfy anyone from an extremely physically active person to a person who likes to window shop, sight-see, and do lunch. I/we plan to return to BH next summer (5th summer visit to BH) and we will have an awesome time all over again...and I hope it's at the Arbor House. Thanks Courtney and JR for making our vacation fabulous!!!
