The minuses outweighed the pluses
On the plus side, this house is in a beautiful, quiet, remote setting with a stream, near hiking and other outdoor activities. It is a spacious house with interesting design features and close to Berkshires attractions. On the minus side, this house was rented with no professional cleaner which, given pandemic conditions, is unconscionable. The owner had us simply wipe down doorknobs and light switches with disinfecting wipes when we arrived. When we left he left only a hour between our departure and the next guests' arrival. We found mouse droppings in all the kitchen drawers, on shelves, counters, and even under bedspreads in one of the bedrooms. The mice were regular visitors, running through the house every evening. When we told the owner about the mouse dropping in the drawer with the dishes and silverware, he simply vacuumed it and told us to return the then clean dishes and silverware to the drawer. This is beyond unsanitary, and should be considered unethical by anyone renting property to unsuspecting visitors. The refrigerator was unclean and still had some of the owner's food in it. The bureaux and the closets were also full of the owner's belongings, so no one could unpack properly for the whole week we were there. The bedrooms and the second floor bathroom had glass windows in the doors with only lace curtains on them, offering no privacy in any room at all. We had to hang sheets and towels for true privacy. The bathrooms themselves were not clean and there were hairs on the floors, the toilet, the sink and the shower. We had the misfortune of experiencing both a tornado watch and a power outage which lasted 2 days. In neither case did the owner contact us or return to the property to check assist in any way. We lost running water during this time and had to use water from the creek to flush toilets. The owner said he'd left us a gallon of water in case of emergencies, but with renting to 7 people this was ridiculously insufficient. At the end of the day, the owner should not be renting this property without help. I'm sure he means well, but it is simply too much for him to keep up with at 75 yo. And during a pandemic, the lack of cleanliness is flatly inexcusable and the presence of mice is certainly a Board of Health violation. Stay at your own risk.

House and yard need major clean-up
Cool original house, a lots of interesting things in the house, beautiful woodwork, friendly owner, good location, but needs a clean-up, but on the other hand very fair: no cleaning fee! I'd rather pay for cleaning....

Lovely country getaway!
Andy's house is a lovely, unique handcrafted gem in a gorgeous setting. Thanks to the high elevation and the fine construction (and with the help of a fan) we stayed comfortable through some very hot July days. We loved sharing drinks on the stone terrace and relaxing in the screened porches.

Berkshire Stay
We enjoyed our stay at the property. Andy, the owner, was very responsive and helpful. It is secluded with lovely woods and a brook. Great place to meet our family especially during COVID-19. The rest of the property is overgrown. A maintained landscaped area for sitting would have been nice.. The interior is unique with wonderful hand-crafted exposed wood framing, architectural features, and a great lay-out. However some furniture is worn (especially outdoor cushions and chairs) and the house could use a good overall cleaning and removing his personal items would be more sanitary and helpful.

Wonderful Cottage Retreat
We always celebrate my husband's and sister's birthdays together. This year, we decided to have a little retreat in a semi-isolated cabin, and this is just perfect. The house is pretty big, with 4 bedrooms in total, and 2 bathrooms. We brought board games/playing cards, and groceries to prepare meals together. It wasn't completely cut off from the world though - he has satellite wifi to keep you connected, and Netflix/Prime to keep you entertained. Andy's cottage is like that out of a dream. So cute, and all made by him. We really enjoyed staying there and chatting with him when he came by.

A Place in the woods
I knew from reading other reviews that the house is remote. I did not grasp just how remote it would feel when we got there even though we were less than 30 minutes form the culture and entertainment of the Berkshires, such as Jacob's Pillow and Tanglewood, not to mention Norman Rockwell Museum. Andy greeted us on arrival and showed us through the house he has built for himself. The wood work is wonderful, the furnishings very comfortable and we kept the house open to the breezes as suggested to eliminate the need for A/C. At Andy's suggestion we brought our own bed linens and towels. Since the house is open there tends to develop a film of dust in the course of a day. We walked the trail along the creek and got to chat with a neighbor. We were two couples and the 2 bedrooms we occupied were comfortable. If you are light sensitive, bring eye shades for the morning light. In your toiletries, you might want to bring your preferred cleansers as well. The kitchen is well equipped and we enjoyed breakfast there both mornings. We also took Andy's recommendation to dine at Dream Away Lodge and had a fun time at this old roadhouse with good food and spirited music in the side room. I would definitely recommend a stay and two nights seemed a bit short to us.

Eclectic, unique getaway
We spent a few days here and really enjoyed our stay. The home is so uniquely decorated that you feel you are staying in a place that was constructed through a series of life experiences. Many cute towns are within an hour away not to mention Appalachian Trail access that is super close and Tanglewood.

Family weekend getaway
A beautiful and unique home. You will feel at ease and away from it all. Bring a book and pick from many reading spots — one of the screened in porches or comfy chair to pass some time. If it rains, which it did for us, the sound of it was lovely! The walk to the lake is a nice short + flat adventure stroll. Bring bug spray. Andy is a great host, with many recommendations and suggestions if you need any. He's an interesting guy with a good sense of humor, getting a tour was one of our favorite parts of the weekend.

A total escape
The perfect escape to the woods for some peace and quiet in a breathtaking setting. A beautiful brook flows right by the property, whose babbling can be heard throughout the house. And following the stream down to the path to a secluded lake was a great way to spend some time exploring the area. The home itself is a work of art - Andy has clearly put a lot of work and many years into making it. It's designed in a way that makes you feel welcome the moment you step in the door. And the area had so much to do - hiking, museums, great food - but we almost didn't want to ever leave the house! And Andy was a fantastic host - communicative, accommodating, and so welcoming. We definitely want to come back.

AMAZING
We traveled to Becket MA from Buffalo Ny and stayed with 2 other couples in the house Friday - Monday the first weekend October 2017 for a wedding our friend was having at the nearby Pillow Dance grounds. Everything was perfect. The house was more than large enough for 6 people, super clean, hiking trails all over thru the woods with all kinds of surprises along side the brook out back. I took a long walk with my wife out there pretty far and was amazed by some of the old growth Pine. The trunks were massive. Don't grow them like that back in Western NY. Back to the house. We stayed in the master bedroom upstairs while the other couples, very large, spacious, amazing views out the multiple windows. The bedroom down stairs came equipped with its own bathroom / sauna. we didn't use the sauna but we did use the fireplace inside, as well as the BBQ, and the small firepit out on the porch. There is enough wood stocked inside the garage to fire a riverboat all the way up the Hudson. You could tell right away that the owner is a carpenter / wood worker and left subtle touches all over the home. Home comes with WiFi, HDTV (Starwars marathon on all day Sunday so the moments that it did rain, everyone was having a blast inside). We did have an issue with cell service, but its to be expected, a small price to pay for being steps away from miles of hiking trails and birdsong. We had a small issue with the hot water tank, but the owner got back to me within minutes on how to reset it. no big deal. All in all a PERFECT weekend. it couldn't have gone better. Massachusetts is truly beautiful in October and so is this Home and the expansive grounds it sits on. The price is EXTREMELY REASONABLE for everything that comes with this property. If you have a medium sized group with you the price works out about $50 less a night per person than at one of the local hotels in the area!!! I would book it again in a minute. Thanks Andrea for everything!

Relaxing beautiful place
Went on a trip with 3 friends and had a great time. Amazing house with hand made furniture. Lovely kitchen but we did most of our cooking on the charcoal grill. Various walks right from the house. State park can be accessed by foot. Nice secluded area but close enough to supermarket and restaurants. Would definitely go back.

Great getaway for R&R could use a little TLC
First off, why only 3.5 stars? On our first night we saw a mouse (or mice, we couldn't tell if it was the same one or more than one) run across the kitchen floor a few times. With a few people unaccustomed to more rustic living, there was a lot of comedic shrieking. When I contacted Andy to see if he had traps we could set, he was deeply apologetic and said he had bait and poison set out but didn't have traps on the property. We enjoyed the rest of our weekend, but we did spot some mouse droppings on the floor, in a drawer with ziploc bags and plastic wrap, and on the kitchen table we'd eaten off of. We saw the mouse/mice again on Saturday night and while there were less shouts, it still made a few people squirmy. Other than that, the soap in one of the bathrooms was a bit weathered with cracks, the kitchen floor could use a good scrubbing, and the bathroom shower could use a spray-down with bleach. But the 3.5 stars are full of what we loved: Being unplugged -- For our bachelorette party of 7 women, this was a great house to disconnect from our reliance on daily technology and connect with each other and our esteemed bride-to-be. We enjoyed the board games we brought, grilling, sitting in front of the wood fire outside, and taking a nature walk. Nature -- From hummingbirds on flowers around the house to mushrooms growing in the woods to listening to the sounds of rain in the morning, we fully appreciated soaking up some fresh air. Andy -- Quick to respond, pleasant to communicate with, and friendly when we chatted upon our departure. Also, the many notes throughout the house were helpful reminders like wearing slippers inside, where to find firewood, where to place cell phone for best reception, what not to touch, how to turn lights on -- all reminders that someone does indeed live here in between guests. The architecture -- A lovely house with so many built-in shelves, 43 (yes, we counted) chairs and options to sit, exposed beams, tables, cupboards, asparagus mirror and leg lamp (how has no one mentioned these in reviews -- they were our favorite part!) the sauna, it's a sight to behold. Location to Becket Beach -- A short, 10-minute drive to the lake was perfect for our kayak, swimming, and soaking up the sun. The beach is all sand, no mucky sludge, and clear to the bottom. The beds -- While one twin bed has a severe case of the squeaks, everyone still commented about how great they slept.

Wonderful Family Time in the Berkshires
Colesbrook Manor is an absolutely charming destination. Andy was a wonderful host, happy to share his paradise with us. We loved the tour of the property and house, so many hidden treasures. My favorite activity was drinking coffee and sitting on the patio in the early morning watching the birds, butterflies, and hummingbirds visit the gardens, it was so peaceful. There are porches off 2 of the bedrooms where you can sit and listen to the brook. The quiet is bliss. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. We loved our stay and would recommend the house as a vacation stop.

Serene and Beautiful Getaway in the Berkshires
My dearest friends and I wanted to get away from the world for a weekend, and Colesbrook Manor was just the place! As soon as we walked in the door we had a cozy feeling of being home. Andy has taken such great care in building a beautiful, warm, and peaceful oasis on this beautiful piece of property. We were truly delighted to sit by the fire, play music, and share a bottle of wine. We enjoyed exploring the trails and creek located right out the back door, as well as stargazing at night. The beds were cozy and the sauna was a treat, especially after taking a walk in the snow on Saturday. If you visit, check out the Dream Away Lodge (open seasonally from around April to Thanksgiving) for delicious food, a quirky atmosphere, and excellent music. However, we were happy that we bought groceries because we did not want to leave the house on Saturday. Andy, Thank you for being such an accommodating host and for building such a lovely home. We will be back!

Beautiful house in the woods
We had a great time with family at Andy's amazing Berkshires house, situated in view of a pond through the trees. State park with trails down the road, but also lots of great walks nearby and with some patience in late afternoon, you might see the pair of beavers come out of their lodge and swim around the pond like we did. Andy also has a canoe and kayak, but we'll do that next trip. Too relaxed on the patio and busy in his well-equipped kitchen cooking up some meals for everyone. He had fridge and closets empty for us and we felt right at home - comfy beds and furniture, plus lots of porches and indoor garden with available herbs! Andy is nearby if you have questions. You'll get the answers and some great stories about how he built the house, one of a kind, that is worth the trip from anywhere.

Take me to the river
Well, it is more like a large very bubbling brook - you get the gist. Andy, the owner, is warm and super helpful. The house is large, bright, funky and built and decorated with love. Absolutely bring all the food you will need or plan to go to the grocery store. I would even advise bringing extra for dinner because once you get there you will not want to go back out. There are too many cozy comfy paces to sit. I felt like I had to check them all out. I played my UKE on at least 5 different chairs moving with the sun and the views. We had cocktails in one of the several seating areas by the river, read inside and out side in spots with sun and views, had conversations by the indoor herb garden and felt like we were living inside and outside in the beauty of the Berkshires. The house is remote and so sweetly quiet. We hiked during the day and cancelled reservations at night because we were too relaxed to make a move. I would definitely go again. Thank you Andy!

Great Get Away in the Woods!
This is a great getaway house in the woods! There is a beautiful lake and hiking paths that are only a short hiking distance from the house. The house is very eclectic, cozy and comfortable, it's spacious enough to fit 10 people. It's very well maintained and clean. It's a very open floor plan, but there are a lot of nooks and crannies to sneak off into to read or just to relax and take a nap. Andy was always helpful with whatever questions we had for him. It's a definite do over and may become an annual visit!

An amazing weekend getaway!
The house is absolutely beautiful - eclectic and charming, but spacious and definitely room to sleep 10 people. The house is well maintained and everything worked as planned - and Andy is always a call away if needed. I would definitely recommend this property for a long weekend getaway, or even a week to unplug and walk the hills or sit by the fire! The only note: Take showers before you wash dishes just to be sure you get hot water! We will definitely be returning to this house in the future.
