Luxurious period house on the shores of Lake Windermere
Built in 1837, the house has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. The lake is less than 50 metre from the property boundary, so there are lake views from many rooms and from the large gardens and meadow. We have 4 luxurious double bedrooms, all ensuite, there is a beautiful kitchen and dining room, and an elegant drawing room. Close to Ambleside (centre of the Lake District), with easy access to other villages, the lakes, and the fells. On site parking. As good as it gets!

Fantastic home on the lake with gorgeous grounds and views. Plenty of rooms to spread out and have privacy yet also large family rooms for gathering together for meals and games. Hosts were excellent and very responsive with tips for local restaurants. Overall a magnificent property and we hope to return!
I called this a home as this is how we felt staying there. The owners are lovely people who are there if you need but give you privacy. They made are Christmas. The views are stunning and the pictures are very accurate. We had from 2 to 9 adults and were great
We had a great time, albeit very short in a beautiful property, very functional but classy and with lots of space and stunning gardens. The hosts were very friendly and had great attention to detail. Highly recommended!
We had three couples stay at Windemere and had an outstanding time. The grounds, property, bedrooms, and common areas were amazing! So clean and spacious! We enjoyed the big kitchen for group meals and took numerous hikes down to the village. It was the highlight of our trip!
The house more than lived up to our expectations. We were a family comprising grandparents, two couples and three young children. Plenty of space for everyone and the garden was a beautiful bonus. The children enjoyed visits from Gillian’s two friendly, well trained collies!
We were lucky to find availability for a couple of nights in this property. Beautifully decorated, cosy and spacious house with everything you could possibly need. Brilliant location close to Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere. I would definitely recommend this property and we would love to come back again.
The house was amazing with enviable views across Windermere. Total luxury. We all really enjoyed the stay. Very close to Ambleside and local amenities. Can’t wait to rebook.

This exceeded all our expectations, a stunningly beautiful period home, we all completely fell in love with it! Perfect location with stunning views from every window. Very well equipped & absolutley immaculate. Gillian & David were so welcoming! We honestly couldn’t have wished for a more wonderful stay, we already cannot wait to return!
Beyond all expectations, beautiful property, immaculate yet so, so comfortable.
Fabulous kitchen / dinning room. Lounge with views to die for.
Many many thanks,
The Fenton family
We stayed here last year and loved it so much that we returned. Beautiful home with everything you could possibly need. Great location close to Ambleside (walking distance) and Bowness and driving distance to many Lake District sights. Lovely owners and great and efficient communication. We'll be back!
This is a perfect holiday home. A stylishly decorated, spacious well equipped house with stunning, uninterrupted lake views. Gillian is a great host and answered any queries we had very quickly. We were made to feel very welcome. EV charging on site was really useful & it’s only a 10 minute walk into Ambleside. There are hill walks possible directly from the house. We loved it.
Absolutely beautiful house and location can’t wait to return
We booked this place for my Dads 80th Birthday and I actually felt emotional when I first walked in as It’s even better than the photos .The ceilings are so high there is a real sense of occasion The attention to detail is really great and you feel really pampered and relaxed The view is amazing Breakfast outside ( even in October) looking at the lake is never to be forgotten. We all had a brilliant weekend My teenage nieces didn’t want to leave! Gillian and David where great hosts. Just need to find an excuse to return soon !
This is an amazing place for my family to spend our Easter weekend. We all thoroughly enjoyed it.
The property fulfilled all my requirements for space, amazing views, peace and tranquillity for a memorable Easter get together with eight members of my family members. The icing on the cake was that we had good weather throughout the Easter weekend, so we were able to enjoy the beautiful garden and walks in the surrounding areas, including a visit to the nearby National Trust park.
We will most certainly come back to the property in the future. Gillian was a wonderful host and did everything possible to make us all feel welcome. I particularly commend her for her efforts to swiftly restore the internet connection when WiFi system went done
Thx for your hospitality.
Great property with access to Ambleside and Lake Windermere
Fantastic property for a family stay. The main positives:
- Beautiful and spacious kitchen...and the front room looks out over the lake.
- Great upstairs with four, large ensuite bedrooms. It only sleeps eight in beds but it's a very large house for eight people.
- Garden is excellent. Mostly dog proof (need to keep half an eye on them), flat lawn for kids to play games, great views of the lake
- Lake shore is fantastic. Large area with relatively little lake traffic. Only slight concern is the fast flowing road into Ambleside which you need to cross to get to the lake. (You can hear it from the house but you can't see it which is great!)
This is an amazing, historic, upscale home in a beautiful area with spectacular views over the lake. Don’t even bother looking at any other homes if this is available. The gardens are a delight and the home is perfect in every way. David and Gillian were lovely and were extremely responsive and helpful. Thank you for a wonderful stay. PS: A must hike if you like hiking is the trek up Wansfell Pike, then down the other side through Troutbeck, where tea and scones at the old Post Office are a must, then down Robin Lane as it meanders back to the home. It’s about a 4-5 hour hike and is quite steep going up to Wansfell Pike, but soft and easy after that. Pick it up in the center of Ambleside just to the right of the waterfalls. And, if you like vegetarian/vegan, Fellinis is as good as it gets.
We hope you enjoy everything about this home and this area as we did. M

This is an absolutely fantastic place to stay. House is absolutely beautiful, nicely furnished and with plenty of space. Fantastic views over the lake. Its also very quiet.
Its in a great location by the lake and very easy to find. the owners provided good instructions ahead of arrival. Parking available for 3 to 4 cars.
I wouldnt hesitate to book again.
This property has wonderful views over lake Windemere with its ever changing landscape. Beautiful, clean accommodation with large rooms. The en-suites to every bedroom are great, along with a well equipped kitchen and large lounge and dining room for gatherings. The large garden is ideal for outdoor bbqs and admiring the views. Everything is provided in the house for you to enjoy an excellent stay. The hosts are lovely and in hand with lots of local information and tips. Local walks on hand. We would love to return.
Fantastic property in an excellent location with friendly and helpful hosts.
