About this property

The Castle, Thornham, Norfolk

Located in the charming coastal village of Thornham, this hideaway is an arresting brick and chalk detached property, featuring a distinctive turreted entrance porch. Dating from the Victorian era and beautifully restored to an exceptionally high standard while retaining characterful original features, The Castle boasts enviable far reaching views to the coast.

Entering the house via the spacious hallway featuring a striking original architrave, and very soon realise you have found a stylish, luxurious and rather fabulous coastal holiday house. The Castle is a double fronted house. On one side is the light-filled, L-shaped dining kitchen with enough space to include a comfortable seating area; an ideal spot for relaxing, chatting and keeping the head chef company. The bespoke hand-built kitchen features natural stone worktops, a large island unit and full-size wine fridge (absolutely vital!), and enjoys views to the coast from the front and into the sunny courtyard garden at the rear, through the bi-folding doors. There's a very useful utility room adjoining the kitchen with a handy external door - so handy for when you return from a day on the beach and need to pop your sandy towels and salty attire straight into the washing machine! To the other side of the house is the sitting room which is a cosier, more intimate space with a warming wood burning stove to light for when the nights draw in. Upstairs are three capacious bedrooms (king-size, king-size zip-and-link and double) and two roomy high-spec bathrooms (one of which is en-suite). The two bedrooms to the front of the house enjoy glorious open views across the marshes to the sea in the distance - an extra excuse to lie in bed! Outside, the south facing garden is just the spot for enjoying a glass of wine while catching the last of the sun's rays.

The Castle is an ideal base for a family, couples or friends looking for a special place to stay on the North Norfolk coast. Thornham is a picturesque village made up of traditional and rather smart Norfolk properties. Located almost midway between the seaside resort of Hunstanton and stunning village of Burnham Market, Thornham is a popular holiday destination that's known for its sandy beach, some lovely local walks, a small harbour and a nearby marshland bird reserve. From The Castle it's an easy five to ten minute stroll into the heart of the village, where you have your pick of some excellent places to eat and drink, whether it's just a coffee and snack or something more substantial. Stretch your legs a bit more and walk to the beautiful wild beach to take in the lovely sea air and stunning views along this beautiful coastline. It is well worth the extra effort.

Spring Escape
We had a great time and really enjoyed staying at The Castle. Having locked ourselves out, the team responded really quickly. Thank you for that. This is an exceptional property, well laid out, beautifully furnished and well equipped and there are plenty of very good places to eat out locally. The road noise can be a bit much at busy times of day - if you have the front windows open. We just closed them and used the rear windows which was fine. An excellent stay.

Fantastic home away from home!
Absolutely lovely family home in a fantastic location. Very comfortable beds and overall layout for a family to stay in and explore the area. The only suggestions we have to improve the experience are (and these are minor, but do add to the overall quality of the stay): for the price of this property, you should include more than one batch of firewood; and it would help to add a small spotlight on the property sign(s) that say "The Castle" (we found it incredibly hard to see either sign, which were both dark slate against a dark exterior, especially when arriving without much daylight and without adequate outside lighting it was also tricky to navigate steps etc.).

Great location and house for 4
This was a great place to stay: a very well-appointed house in a great location. I would definitely stay here again - but next time I would need to remember some kitchen equipment - there were lots of plates and glasses, but hardly anything to serve food out of or serve it with (just one serving fork?!) Also, I wouldn't recommend this for 6 people, for 4 it was perfect, but there wouldn't be enough sofa/comfy seating for another couple. We hope to return again!

Relaxing break
Everything was as described and the property more than met our expectations. A couple of domestic issues were resolved very swiftly when we rang the Hideaways team. We had a fabulous week exploring Thornham and the surrounding area and were fortunate to have some very sunny days to enjoy the surroundings.

2 week summer break
We stayed at the Castle for two weeks in August 2021. We’re a family of 4 with two small children. It’s a beautiful house in a fantastic location. The utility room with washer dryer and clothes airer was particularly useful. Great showers, comfortable beds. There was a real sense of space in the kitchen area, hallway and landing which we loved. The rooms were a good size and the furniture was stylish. Garden is very well maintained with great furniture. Thornham village is one of nicest villages along the coastal road, and comes with great pubs, the deli with play area and Drove Orchards which are some of our go-to-places when we’re in North Norfolk. 25 mins drive to Holkham, Burnham Market and Wells. Holme next the Sea (Norfolk wildlife trust car park is the best but needs booking) is an absolute gem of a beach too & great facilities. The only downside we found of the house was that there wasn’t salt and pepper or any bin bags which would’ve been really convenient, but it’s a minor point as the Castle is the best house we’ve stayed in so far in 3 years of north Norfolk travel! Thanks!

Comfortable house.
The house was very comfortable and well furnished. It was well placed for exploring the area, local food shopping and good eating. We particularly enjoyed the bifold doors at the back of the house and as the weather was very good we enjoyed sitting out in the garden and having a drink there in the evening. We felt that there was a lack of information about appliances, most notably the tv, which needed more detailed information in the house book. This was the only cottage we have been to for many years that had no welcome pack. Not a result of coronavirus we felt as the cottage we moved on to provided its usual generous gifts.

Great accommodation in prime location
We had the most relaxing short stay at the Castle. The views are amazing and the house is ideal for a family with children.

7 day stay with family(all adults), January 2020
The purpose of this holiday early in January was to celebrate a special birthday. The house was spacious and well enough appointed to enable us to cook, socialise and relax in comfort. It's location in Thornham, within walking distance of the coast, was good, set back from a busy road but well insulated from any noise. There are several excellent places to eat within a short distance - The Lifeboat Inn, Thornham, Titchwell Manor(Sunday lunch) - and for a special occasion, further afield, The Gunton Arms at Thorpe Market was fabulous! It is possible to have wonderful coastal walks in the direction of Hunstanton or Wells and then use the local buses for the return journey.

Stylish Accommodation to match a truly fabulous Norfolk Village
A truly stylish yet incredibly comfortable holiday let, up there with the best that I’ve stayed in. Lovely attention to detail and a real plus were the comfy beds. Within a few hours of arriving felt truly relaxed and at home. Located in possibly one of the best villages I’ve stayed in in Norfolk in relation to local amenities, three good pubs all serving excellent food, a great deli and a local farm centre. On top of this there are great walks all around. Only downside was the road outside which does get very busy quite early but we stayed in Oct so didn’t need to open the windows so you didn’t notice this really once in the house, so felt very snug.

A cracking week in Thornham in a wonderfully well restored house
As above, a great house, very well equipped and set up. Great service too from the Hideaways team. Just one concern was that the position of the house on the coast road meant that there really needs to be a road side mirror positioned so that it can be safe to drive out of the driveway. it was a bit like dodging a bullet in that regard given that cars are moving pretty fast along the road, into the village at that point but there is the exit is on a blind corner. Other than that, great house itself,, really comfortable and well done to the restoration team.

Fantastic
Had a fabulous three generation holiday here. There was plenty of room for the six of us. The Castle is a beautiful house. Kitted out with everything you could need.
