The Neighbourhood:
The condo is on the top floor at the Ridge, a luxury condo development that sits high on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Big Beach. The only sound you hear is the waves in this quiet neighbourhood.
Big Beach:
Ucluelet's largest beach is across the street and down a quick path. You can bring wood down and have a beach bonfire when it's permitted by the parks board. There is also an 1890's shipwreck on Big Beach to explore. It's an amazing feeling to stand on it and think of how survivors must have felt when it was nothing but forest.
Wild Pacific Trail:
The trail head to the world famous Wild Pacific Trail is just on the side of Big Beach, a quick walk from the Ridge. Within minutes you are deep in nature, surrounded by trees and looking down at the waves crashing on the rocks from high on the trail. Local artists have built unique viewpoint crows nests all along the trail. Hike it for a just short time, or take the 2-3 hour round trip.
Big Rock Hotel, Restaurant and Bar:
The Big Rock hotel is just a quick walk up the street. They have a great restaurant for fine dining and really cool bar/lounge where you can get a drink or order food.
Ucluelet:
There is a new community centre half a block away that offers drop in classes for yoga and exercise and other local events. The main Ucluelet market co-op is a 3 minute drive or an easy 15 min walk for groceries or other supplies. The centre of Ucluelet is just another 5 minutes walk for restaurants, cafes, galleries, whale watching and fishing tours, and in summer, the aquarium is open for visits.
Tofino:
Gorgeous Tofino is about 40-45 minutes away by car.
SURFING:
There are two surf shops in town that rent boards and wetsuits. Long Beach Surf Shop and Relic Surf Shop.
The main surfing beaches are all nearby:
Flow Bay - 20 min drive
The Wik - 20 min drive
Long Beach - 25-30 min drive
Cox Bay and Chestermans - 35-45 min drive
There are other right point surf breaks that break in the winter on the inside of Barkley Sound. These are for more experienced surfers only, as it's rocks not beach, and often barrel. It's not far, and accessible through gravel roads. The local surf shops can tell you how to get there.
