Cape Breton Sabbatical
My youngest wanted to "frolic in wild flowers" somewhere in the Maritimes after graduating from high school, and chose Nova Scotia. Jan's home was a wonderful base for several relaxing days in a beautiful part of the world. Convenient to Baddeck and anything needed, and a great Cabot Trail starting point. Jan and the on-island folks were very responsive to any concerns and even called to check on us a time or two. No complaints at all. A beautiful home.

Home Away From Home
This property provided lots of space for our party of 8.Situated just outside of Baddeck we were close to the many ammenities the cute town had to offer. We ejoyed shopping, the cafes along with the pontoon boat ride over to the beach. The house itself is secluded on the countryside with amazing views all around and a beautiful fronch porch for enjoying family time. The house was equipped with everything we needed to enjoy our home away from home. The host,Jan,was easily reachable and communicated with us throughout our stay.I would highly recommend and would stay again!

Restful farmhouse close to Baddeck Nova Scotia
Very comfortable large farmhouse. Clean and in good condition, well furnished. Well equipped with towels, dishes, cleaning supplies, and even a few spices/condiments. House is over 100 years old, so does have somewhat steep stairs (with bannister)and slightly uneven floors. Might be difficult if your mobility is limited or you have toddlers. Did not cook much, kitchen functional but no dishwasher/limited room for washing a lot of dishes. A few miles from Baddeck, a charming small village on the Bras d' Or Lake with some very decent casual restaurants (lobster:) Owner and manager both very helpful. Lovely scenery and close to Cabot Trail. Note this is a rather rustic area not "touristy" like Cape Cod etc. If thats whar you are seeking you will have a wonderful stay!

Farmhouse Fantastic
This is a beautiful old farmhouse with modern charm. It comfortably slept 2 adults and 3 children age range between 5 - 10 years old. Had plenty of games for rainy days. Good biking and fishing just down the driveway and an easy ride to town. My family loves the location and took day trips to Highland Village, drove the Cabot Trail and others. Jan was very responsive to any questions we had and the binder with local recommendations helped us plan our relaxing days. The dryer was not working but it didn’t matter with the cloths line on the porch. There is no dishwasher which played into the charm of the home for us. Baddeck, Cape Breton and Nova Scotia may have just stolen are hearts.

Beautiful farmhouse
Loved loved loved staying at the farmhouse. The house is gorgeous, clean, comfortable and full of history. Felt like staying at our own family home - complete with books, board games, and all the comforts of home. It’s a perfect home base for exploring Cape Breton, and Jan has put together a lovely binder of recommendations that we’re super helpful in guiding us during our stay. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Great house with nice pastoral views. Very peaceful and easy to access Cabot trail and town. House is equipped with everything you would need and then some! We brought a screen tent and it was a great way to sit outside and enjoy the views. Host was very responsive with questions. We look forward to returning in the future.

A great place to stay for Celtic Colours
We greatly enjoyed our stay in the old farmhouse. It was very comfortable and with a lot of character. Definitely a good choice for our 9 days during the Celtic Colours festival. Jan was so helpful and accessible in contact to ensure we had everything we needed. Highly recommended!

Fantastic house and host
This was the perfect house for a family stay. Very nicely appointed and includes everything you might need. The location is great for a central base if exploring the island. We have never had such a fantastic host, who made us feel very welcome.

Just fantastic!!
We really enjoyed our relaxing four days at the Green Gables Farmhouse by Baddeck Bay. The six of us had been moving along, sleeping in a different town every night and so were very happy to stay still for a few days here. What a relaxing location! Lovely old home, much loved, nicely set up for us, perfect accommodation for us.

Heaven on Earth
My husband and I and our three daughters (aged 16, 19 and 23) spent a week at this lovely rental in August. We all felt instantly at home. The property itself is large, private, quiet, and offers beautiful pastoral views from every angle. As soon as we unpacked we gathered in the late afternoon on the front porch overlooking the huge, abundant hydrangea bushes and began what would become the most relaxing week our family has ever spent together. We all loved the charming old farmhouse—the downstairs rooms were all tastefully decorated with sturdy antiques and cozy furniture, and the upstairs bedrooms were light, airy and peaceful. The beds were all very comfortable and fitted with nice all-cotton sheets. The outdoor shower was to die for; we barely used the ones indoors after trying it out. The location is excellent due to its proximity to Baddeck (the Cape Breton town with the most to offer), the spectacular Cabot Trail, and the beautiful beaches (our favorite was West Mabou). Many books about Cape Breton lined the bookshelves. This, in addition to the comprehensive binder of information left for us in the kitchen, proved very helpful when planning our days. Jan, the owner, is such a generous host—she really could not have been nicer or more gracious. I would not hesitate to recommend this property to others. (In fact I already have!)

Amazing stay!
What more can we say than our stay at the Farmhouse was PERFECT!! We loved the house from the minute we walked through the door. I was an ideal, central location for our group of 7. Peaceful and serene, quiet and private yet still close to town for whatever we might need. The house was spotless when we arrived and had everything you could possibly need on hand. An ideal get away. We were sad to leave and can't wait to go back!

Lovely house, great location
We had a wonderful week in Green Gables. The house is exactly as it's pictured. It is old, but very solid. The stairs don't creak, the plumbing is excellent, and it is impeccably clean and tidy. We have stayed in many places that are only a few years old and many of them lack any kind of character at all. This place has loads of character and everything works like a charm. The setting great. It is secluded without feeling like you are completely cut off from the world. There are neighbours across the road at the end of the long driveway, and Baddeck is a short drive away. There are great beaches both nearby and a little further afield. We loved both Big Pond beach on Bras D'or and the one at West Mabou. Kidston beach, also very nice, is a short ferry ride from the town dock, but dogs are not allowed on the ferry or on the island. There are many things to see and do in Baddeck if you decide to explore the town. The Alexander Graham Bell museum is awesome, there is a theatre company, ceilidhs are held in a few locations and archery a few nights a week at the curling club. Our kids loved the archery. Our fifteen year old said that the key to a good vacation for him is good WiFi. Green Gables has it, and he used it - a lot!

A nice location with a lot of Cape Breton charm
We enjoyed our nine day stay in this old farmhouse, which was built around 1900. The house has wood slat floors that slope a little due to age, but this just adds to its character and quaintness. It brought back memories of when I used to visit Cape Breton with my grandmother when I was a kid in the 1960's. It was very clean when we checked in and was well stocked with everything you need for an extended stay. The beds were quite comfortable. The land around the house is picturesque and quiet, which makes for a very relaxing setting, and it's a pleasant drive of only 5-10 minutes to Baddeck for restaurants and shopping. Wifi connection was excellent. Two modern conveniences missing were a dishwasher and television; we didn't miss a dishwasher that much, but for the price I think the house should have a TV. In summary, I recommend this place; it was so much nicer than staying in a hotel.

Clean, comfortable and private
Green Gables was everything promised and more. The home was comfortable, very clean and situated in a quiet, intimate setting, so near to all the bustle of tourism. It allowed us to relax after well filled days of touring the Cabot Trail, golfing, visiting historic sites, enjoying Celtic music and of course fine dining. Our hosts were warm and hospitable folks, who were a pleasure to meet. I would recommend Green Gables to any travelers to beautiful Cape Breton!

Lovely farmhouse and ideal location
If you are planning a week in Cape Breton and want to stay in one place this is the ideal location for you. Centrally located, it is a short drive to the highway (but very private and quiet). The farm house is exactly as pictured. Baddeck is close by for groceries and fresh sea food on the wharf. The owners are wonderful to deal with. The cottage is well stocked with books, games and a binder the owners have put together of recommended restaurants and activities.

Wonderful Week in Baddeck
We decided to vacation in Nova Scotia this October - Cape Breton Island, specifically. Three couples, (I should mention that 3 of the 6 of us are originally from Edinburgh, Scotland) and we wanted to see “New Scotland” firsthand. And the timing of our stay with the Celtic Colours Festival couldn't have been planned any better. We chose Baddeck because of its central location and by chance found the Green Gables rental property and could not have been happier with our decision. From start to finish, the owner and the local property management person could not have been more accommodating. The house was exactly as stated (and portrayed in the photos). It was quaint, yet well equipped, clean and well maintained. And, while in a very pleasant quiet country setting, the house was only a few minutes to town or to a major roadway. We would recommend, if you visit, to stay in centrally located Baddeck . And we would highly recommend the Green Gables property. The Cabot Trail is a must see (just like the Highlands of Scotland); the Alexander Graham Bell museum (he was Scottish, too); lunch or dinner at The Red Shoe Pub in Mabou; or lunch at The Chowder House on the Cabot Trail in Neil’s Harbor. The Gaelic College in St Ann’s is worth a visit as is the Glenora Distillery in Glenville, just to mention a few. From the morning coffee on the front porch to the crackle of the logs in the fireplace after a day of sightseeing, our first trip to Cape Breton will be one that we’ll remember and cherish, always. We’re already planning next year’s visit. Matt, Southbury CT

Great stay for a two families!
We loved this cottage. We had a large group visiting family members on different parts of Cape Breton. This was a perfect central location for our travels. There was ample space for three adults and four kids. The house was clean and well-stocked. Felt like we were staying with family. We did have small kids (twins 18months, plus a 3yr old and a 7yr old) so we had to hide a few valuables during our stay. If the kids were a bit older we would not have worried. Private beach was wonderful for the kids. Very short drive to the town. Lots of bugs but the owners graciously made sure enough spray was available. Owners were very nice and promptly dealt with our questions. Nice guide in the house to local attractions and restaurants.

Charming and Comfortable
Nicely furnished, tastefully decorated, comfortable amenities, peaceful setting, ideally situated. This quiet and lovely property incorporates all that is the essence of Cape Breton. There is nothing more to ask for in a "home away from home". In addition, the owners were professional and personable to work with making the transaction a very pleasant experience. Highly highly recommend this property to those looking for a real taste of Cape Breton.
