About this property

Kanien'kehá:ka Roundhouse - Unique Cordwood Home - A Nature Lovers' Retreat

Rural, serene & secluded 'Living in the Round' with eclectic, Beatles-themed décor. Unique cordwood Roundhouse with private swimming pool. 7 acres of private forest with wildlife. Ideal for 3 couples or a close family of 6 who want a quiet getaway. Nearby historic & lively Village of Merrickville has Rideau River Canal Locks, gift shops, art galleries, cafés, restaurants & pubs, patios, and live music. Canada's Capital City of Ottawa is only 50 minutes away.

SLEEPING ACCOMMODATION
The house can sleep up to 6 people in *3 bedrooms: 2 guests on 1 queen in the master bedroom; 2 guests on 1 double in the guest bedroom, and 2 guests on 1 queen in the *3rd bedroom which is a 'seasonal' bunkie (available May through September). Note: the bunkie bedroom does not have a washroom but it is just 12 steps from the main house entrance.

MUCH MORE THAN A "COTTAGE"!
Although many people refer to my house as a 'cottage', it is my principal residence, and therefore, my home and castle - nestled within my little slice of paradise! My home is named "Kanien'kehá:ka Roundhouse", which reflects my Mohawk heritage. The house is a unique, energy-efficient, round-shaped house of 'stackwall/cordwood masonry' construction.

Despite my home’s relatively small, yet cozy, open-concept living space, it features many 'creature comforts'; such as pinewood floors, wood-burning fireplace in a sunken livingroom, central heating & air-conditioning, ceiling fans, fully-equipped modern kitchen with island, ensuite soaker bathtub & large shower stall, unlimited WiFi internet, 58" satellite Roku TV, Blu-Ray DVD player and a Super Stereo Sound System which reverberates 'around the round'. The eclectic décor can best be described as 'Cool Rock Star Chic' and even "muzium-like", which reflects my varied life experiences & passions, particularly for The Beatles.

For OUTDOOR LIVING, there is a new ON-GROUND (UNHEATED) SWIMMING POOL, (note: open late May-late Sep), with cedar lanai & (yoga) sun deck; propane BBQ and a screened-in pinewood gazebo, (known as 'Cantina Mexico'), for 'bug-free' outdoor dining.

It's an 'Out of This World' experience! In the spring of 2017, my Roundhouse was used as a 'set' for a home on the planet Mars, in an award-winning independent Sci-Fi feature film, entitled "Blue Skies on Mars", which was released in the summer of 2018.

EXCLUSIVE ACCESS: Guests have EXCLUSIVE access to the ENTIRE property, which includes the Roundhouse, bunkie, gazebo, swimming pool & 7-acre property - it is NOT SHARED with the owner or any other guests during your stay.

CHECK-IN PROCEDURE: There is NO 'SELF CHECK-IN'. You will be met & greeted by your host, in person, who will provide you with a 20-minute orientation tour of the property's features and amenities. At that time, you will be given your own personal electronic keypad access code to use during your stay.

GUEST PRICING: Quoted nightly rate is for 2 people. Extra guests, to a maximum of 4 others, is an additional $15 per person, per night. When booking, please be sure to accurately state the number of adults and children (under 13 years of age). Once your booking is accepted, you will be REQUIRED TO SUBMIT FULL NAMES of everyone in your group, in your booking messaging to the host. No 'surprise/unregistered' guests or pets, please!

PRIVACY: Your privacy is guaranteed. There are no interior or exterior surveillance cameras in operation during your stay.

NO PETS ALLOWED. Regardless of how 'well-behaved' they are, pets, particularly dogs, are not permitted for the very simple reason that they can inherently, by their nature, interfere with the peaceful environment enjoyed by the abundant wildlife which is resident on the property, even when leashed.

TOILETRIES: Toilet tissue is provided. Although, a selection of hygiene travel samples are also provided, guests may want to bring their own shampoo, conditioner & shower soap, (no 'anti-bacterial' soaps, please, as such products are not septic tank-friendly!).

BEDLINEN & TOWELS: All bedlinen, blankets, pillows are provided. Bath, Shower & Pool towels are also provided.

INTERNET SPEED: Although unlimited WiFi is available and adequate for average household use, the internet speed in this rural area can fluctuate and service can sometimes be unreliable. If you need to conduct important online work, business or Zoom calls during your stay, internet service may prove frustrating at times.

WILDLIFE ALERT! It is not unusual to be visited by wildlife, (field mice, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits/hares, groundhogs, skunks, raccoons, turtles, snakes, grouse, wild turkeys, many songbirds and even deer!). We respectfully ask that you DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS because that would interfere with their routine natural feeding habits.

MOSQUITO ALERT! Bring insect repellent, especially in the months of May & June.

TICK WARNING! As the property is rural, all guests must be aware of the possibility of encountering ticks. Please research prevention methods.

CLEANLINESS & TIDINESS: I have a very low 'cleaning fee' due to the fact that most of the 451 guests I have hosted in the last 6 years have left my home so clean & tidy that its as if they had never been here! Some have even left gifts in appreciation of how much effort & pride I take in presenting such a clean, tidy & orderly home for their visit. To those SUPERGUESTS, a sincere, heartfelt "Nyá:wen" (thank you), for caring for my home so well. For your efforts, you will always be welcome to return... to clean my home again!

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD:
The Roundhouse is located 9 km east of Merrickville, 15 km west of Kemptville and 2.8 kms south of the primary arterial county road which runs between Merrickville & Kemptville, on a rural, well-maintained secondary road. There are several secluded homes on large wooded lots on the approach. A neighbouring private stable frequently exercises their horses along the road. A nearby railway line features the occasional 'mournful' signal horn of a passing freight train.

GETTING AROUND:
A car is essential if you want to visit nearby villages, towns and attractions. There is no public transportation, taxis or Uber. The village of Merrickville is 9 km west of the Roundhouse and the town of Kemptville is 17 km (16 min) east. Smiths Falls is 26 km (27 min), Historic Perth is 47 km (44 min.), and Parliament Hill, in the nation's capital city of Ottawa, is just a quick 50 min. drive north via Hwy 416.

Amazing and one of a kind home

We had an amazing experience staying in Paul Marc's home. Very clean, peaceful and truly a paradise home. This home is full of memorabilia, everyday we would discover something new to enjoy at or learn from. Paul's recommendation to try Iron Forge pizza and their citrus herb chicken wings is a must try. Recommend eating this delicious dinner in the Cantina Mexico to truly enjoy your evening! We also loved sitting outside watching the sunrise while enjoying a cup of coffee and a croissant, and also got visited with all kinds of birds. We can't thank you enough for giving us this opportunity, and we would love to come back again! Paul Marc is truly a SUPERHOST!!

Wonderful and relaxing holiday

We really enjoyed our stay at the roundhouse. The property was exactly as presented in the listing. The house contained everything we could need except for food and drink Paul-Marc took his time to show us around the property and tell us the history of the house, which was very interesting. He was available in case of any emergency, which was very reassuring. The property is beautiful, quiet and private. We enjoyed all aspects, from walking in the bush and collecting firewood, to relaxing by the pool and on the porch. We enjoyed eating in Casa Mexicana... outdoor dining with no bugs! We had fun building a campfire and roasting marshmallows. The indoor atmosphere was fun and eclectic. It was comfortable and relaxing. We felt safe at night. The town is so nice! We enjoyed an afternoon walking around and having a drink on a patio. We also watch the locks in action, allowing the passage of boats. We had fun fishing in the area and caught some sunfish and pumpkinseed. All in all, it was a wonderful little vacation and we hope to return! Thank you Paul-Marc 🙂

Amazing Accommodation

What an incredible place! Beautiful eclectic decor, friendly hosts, perfect location, and all of the amenities a family could need. Master bedroom with ensuite and soaker tub, second bathroom, laundry facilities, separate bunkie area, fire pit, clean pool, great trails on the expansive property, screened-in gazebo, WiFi, connected TV, piano and guitars, full kitchen, and more. We immediately felt relaxed and “at home, away from home”. We had a wonderful time here connecting and getting away from it all, and we hope to return soon!

Peaceful Creative Oasis

I stayed here with some friends; we are musicians and had concerts in the area. The roundhouse was so lovely and peaceful. The morning walks are lovely and the little cabana is great to hang out in. It is obvious that Paul-Marc has taken the time to care for both the inside and outside of the home. I loooooved this house and will definitely book again if I travel to eastern Ontario in the future.

Absolutely Fantastic!

Paul Marc was a gracious host and his home was simply the best. Everything came as advertised. The attention to detail was second to none. As a music lover, I was impressed by the sound system and the acoustics in the roundhouse. Paul Marc has it dialed in fabulously and the local radio station had my partner and I dancing and singing along all weekend long. The trails on the property were so cool. Merrickville was such a sweet small town where all the people say hello and genuinely care for one another. Jenn and I could not have had a better time, thank you so much Paul Marc!!! Definitely will be back... Al

Anniversary Get-a-way - Kanien'kehá:ka Roundhouse (Nature Lovers' Retreat)

We could not have asked for a better place to celebrate our 48th wedding anniversary, Sep 1,1973, and our 55th first date anniversary, Sep 16,1966. Upon arrival Paul Marc was there to greet us and give us a short tour of the property. Paul Marc also handed us 2 pieces of paper when we arrived and we could not believe he had been so thoughtful The first sheet listed the Top 30 UK pop charts from Sep 16,1966. Boy did that bring back memories. The second sheet was a little history of event since then that have happened in or around that date since Sep 16,1966, e.g. Who the UK Prime Minister was, US President was and other very interesting facts. It finished with Sep 16,2021 indicating our arrival at The Roundhouse. We could not believe how beautiful is was inside, just as good or better than the pictures posted on VRBO. The attention to detail it must have taken Paul Marc and his partner to have The Roundhouse decorated with all the musical instruments and Beatles info and decoration, as well as very informative books on the First Nations peoples. WE could not have asked for better weather as well as The Roundhouse was a terrific location for visiting Merrickville, Kemptville and Kanata. It is only about 3kms from Burritts Rapids where we were able to walk the Tip-to-Tip trail and the small island. The Cantina Mexico was ideal for eating out without any insects or bugs getting in your food. The trail around the property keeps you excited to see what is coming next. The swimming pool while not heated did not stop Elizabeth from going in. At 70F a little too chilly for me. We also got to visit nearby Kilmarnock and Kilmarnock Island. This was special as we were both born in Kilmarnock, Scotland and Ian is a big Kilmarnock Football Club fanatic. Kilmarnock Orchard was a great place to visit. In closing we could not have picked a better location to spend this special time together. To Paul Marc a big thank you. Niá:wen .

Peaceful getaway surrounded by nature

Words cannot express the absolute peace and respite we got from out stay at Kanien'kehá:ka Roundhouse. Paul is the perfect host and story teller. We could have sat and listened to him talk for hours. The house and property are super-clean and well taken care of. The surroundings provided a quiet, relaxing escape from the noise of the city, putting us in soulful state of calm. We almost forgot what the night sky looked like after being confined to our apartment for far too long. It was great to see what a beautiful area we live near and help us heal from a lot of pain and tragedy over the last 3 years. We would go back to Paul's beautiful roundhouse again in a heartbeat when the world permits. I highly recommend Paul's property if you need an escape and love 60s pop culture. The house is a shrine to the greatest era of music and art. We will miss are peaceful getaway. All the best and peace.

Mini Museum

My husband and I celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary at this quaint and quirky cottage, it was supremely peaceful. Just what we needed that week. Paul lived up to his super host status explaining some of the history of the unique building, giving us a welcoming tour and even had the wood prepped in the fireplace for us when we arrived. We enjoyed the fun trails outdoors and taking in the eclectic decor of the cottage. It was a great getaway and would definitely suggest it to friends and family.

Beautiful and quiet refuge with touch of whimsy.

Mary and I had a very enjoyable stay at the Roundhouse. Our mornings commenced with sitting outside on the porch with our coffees enjoying the warmth of the sun, birdsong and bees buzzing. The Roundhouse itself was very comfortable, with many interesting photos and artefacts of pop / rock history. We greatly appreciated the TLC and attention to every detail and hard work that Paul-Marc put into the Roundhouse itself as well as the nature paths with their occasional whimsical "ornamentaiion to make this place truly special. We also enjoyed exploring the area and many of the sideroads viewing the fall colours. Our several trips to Merrickville exploring it's historical landmarks and sampling the some of the best ice cream my Wife and I have ever experienced at the old Ice Cream Shoppe on the main street. All in all an amazing getaway for us from the London area as this was our first real opportunity to travel away from home since the beginning of the covid lockdown. Further to that Paul-Marc's diligence with regards to sanitizing, physical distancing where appropriate and generally providing a very clean and safe environment for our stay was greatly appreciated. Many thanks again Paul-Marc! Rob and Mary (Morgan)

Wonderful getaway

The real deal. A beautifully maintained, immaculate residence the owner lives in. Painstaking attention to detail, clearly takes hosting responsibilities on board. Beautiful property and house full of delights and surprises - eclectic, warm, welcoming and well provisioned. Country home, very quiet save for occasional traffic of the non bunny/squirrel type. Great south facing skies for the stargazers with minimal night pollution. An hour's drive to downtown Ottawa if wondering if it makes sense to rent to have both country and city experiences. Book it, you'll thank yourself for it.

Saved our family vacation!

Paul-Marc was understanding when we booked that this was not what we had planned for our 2020 family vacation but was willing to allow us to book/stay at his roundhouse. We couldn't have been happier and our 2nd choice quickly became top of our list of places to stay! His home has everything for cooking meals at home, close enough to town for a take-out treat, a perfectly sized pool which we enjoyed daily as well as the firepit & screened gazebo. Great interesting house

Very remote, nice and quiet, the "central" house, is very interesting with a lot of personality in the inside with all what a music connoisseur would enjoy! everything is there that you need for cooking etc... Host is very friendly, and easygoing, and will tell you everything you need to know when you arrive. While this is not at all anything the host can do, there is a lot of mosquitoes at night, ( you can still enjoy dinner under the screened area), so make sure to brink a lot of mosquito repellants/ citronella!

WONDERFUL GETAWAY!!

We loved our time at Paul's roundhouse. We needed a get-away-from-it-all, and this gem just fit the bill. We were close enough to town, but felt like we were in our own world! Paul has decorated the home with many intricacies.....even after a couple of days I continued to find new things to look at. We loved the pool and the deck outdoors, plus the jacuzzi inside; what a treat they were! Paul has stocked the basics in the kitchen, which proved to be needed, despite our careful packing. He really has thought of everything to make one's visit complete. He is a wonderful host and was so gracious when we got stuck at home an extra day before our trip. Thanks again, Paul!

About the host

Hosted by Paul Marc

Host profile image
She'kon! (Hello!)

I am a Mohawk Canadian who was born in the United Kingdom. My Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother & Great Great Grandmother all hailed from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in Eastern Ontario, Canada. My father was French-Canadian. My daughter is Danish. My 'significant others' have been English, Scottish, Dutch, Danish, German, Swiss & Polish. My current partner is of Anishinaabe heritage.

I have lived in 10 countries & areas, (England, Canada, United States, The Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Turkey, France, Southern Africa & Southeast Asia), and I have experienced life, at length, in another 45 countries. After 30 years of living abroad, I resettled in Canada in 2006.

"Don't Dream It, Be It!" has always been my life motto. So, I became, in this order, a world traveller; a travel agent & guide; a radio broadcaster; a rock singer & bass guitarist; a father; an English teacher; a professional yachtsman; a beach bum; an alpine ski & snowboard guide and a music school manager.

These days, I'm retired & yet revitalized - and focussed on making your stay in my home a memorable one. So, please come to my 'little slice of paradise', (which was found after 30 years of nomadic global wandering), and be one of my "Super-Guests"!

Niá:wen! (thank you)

Why they chose this property

I have always sought to live in unusual accommodations, in unusual places. When I was born, I lived in a tudor-style house in England. I once lived in an 18th century coach-house and later, in a converted windmill, (which, of course, was round), in The Netherlands. I have lived in French chalets at 2000 meters above sea level. At sea level, I have lived on a variety of sailing yachts for 6 years in Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Italy and when I sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean. My friends are not surprised that I now live in "The Roundhouse".

What makes this property unique

The greatest benefit of living in this area is being surrounded by the serenity and quiet which allows one to actually experience nature and wildlife intimately. And then, moments away, is a busy little village with craft stores, restaurants, cafes, patios, artists/artisans & musicians. The best of both worlds!
