About this property

Bagenal Harvey Cottage- Norman Castle Cottage Beautifully Restored

The castle cottages, newly refurbished, are on a heritage site, flanking a superb 1500s castle (Tower House). Butlerstown has been in the ownership of the same family for many generations, and it has been the wish of the current owners for many years that its beauty and tranquility should be made more available to the public. Set in 100 acre farm and woodland, in the sunniest corner of Ireland, we are just 10 mins drive from the closest good beach. The castle cottages have their own private Herb Garden and Lavender Haggard, and there is a small soccer pitch for children to play on. Good local restaurants, pubs (such as the Lobster Pot pub/restaurant), riding stables, golf courses, museums and bird heritage sites (such as the Saltee Islands, North Slob and Tacumshin Lake) are all within easy striking distance. Donkeys and other pet animals, and a traditionally run vegetable garden, ancient well and other special features all help to make Butlerstown a unique place.

Wonderful spot - definitely will come again
This is an absolutely gorgeous place to stay, Jim and Anna couldn’t be kinder and were incredibly generous with their time - the house was toasty warm and neat as a pin, the kids had a great time feeding the donkeys, playing soccer and cards. So much to do in the area - thanks so much Jen and co

Wonderful Stay
Our group of 5 had a great stay at the cottage. The cottage itself is large and comfortable. We all thought the beds were the most comfortable of any vacation rental we've stayed at. The kitchen was well appointed and we cooked each day. The grounds are gorgeous. The kids loved feeding apples to the donkeys and the whole group loved Jim's castle tour. The cottage is only a few minutes drive to shops, 15 minutes to Kilmore Quay harbor, and 20 minutes into Wexford town. A cozy few days with family and an overall wonderful time.

Historically Wonderful Stay
What a wonderful experience! Anna was such a kind and thoughtful host, and graciously spent time with us touring her property and teaching us all about her ancestral home. Exploring the 15th century castle was a once in a lifetime experience. The accommodations were cozy, comfortable and had all we needed. I would highly recommend a stay at Bagenal Harvey cottage. Memories to last a lifetime!

Great experience
This property is idyllic. The hosts are fantastic and show they are passionate about their property and giving guests the best experience possible. The pictures do not do the cottages justice nor the area around. It is a bit out of the way from big city living but that’s exactly what we wanted. Our children were treated as special as the adults and made use of the legos Anna had made available. We loved the fireplace and the beds were super comfortable. We are planning our next stay!

A real home to us
We had a very delightful stay and sitting by the fireplace in the beautifully arranged livingroom or at the large kitchen table, the whole atmosphere had a certain magic that impressed the whole family. Anna and Jim were perfect and warmhearted hosts who made us feel really comfortable and Jim's tour of the tower gave us so many insights into the past together with a spectacular view. Highly recommended!

More beautiful and cozy than we could have imagined!
We loved our stay at the Banegal Cottage! Anna and her family were very accommodating hosts during the Christmas holidays. The cottage itself was beautifully finished and decorated, we loved every detail. It was extremely cozy in the winter with the beautiful fire place. My toddler loved going for walks around the property, jumping in puddles and feeding the donkeys. We would absolutely come again and will recommend to any friends travelling to Ireland!

The absolute highlight of our trip!
There are no words to describe how perfect this is. Anna and Jim are a delight and Jim’s tour was hands down the best thing we experienced in Ireland. If I had been traveling with a family, this cottage would have been perfect for kids. A beautiful garden to explore, animals, an orchard. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

Off the beaten path for a reason
Anna and Jim were the best owners. Anna was willing to pick us up at 4 am at the harbor if we could not find a taxi. Jim gave us an amazing 2.5 hour tour of the castle. The tour was incredible with so much history of the castle and Ireland. Home was warm and cozy. They even provided us firewood for a nice evening in front of the fireplace. Only negative would be that the WiFi is slow and second bathroom does not have a shower just a tub. The farm was beautiful. The sheep and donkey were fun. Only about 5 miles from the beach. We hope to go back one day.

Great Stay Next to a Castle
What a GREAT place to stay. To start, the rooms are super comfortable, adorable and historic. Everything we need to use was explained so we had no trouble. It is located in a great spot. We easily visited the Dingle Peninsula one day and the Beara Ring the next. We were so pleased, but the topper was our tour of the castle. Jim was such a great tour guide. You could tell from the way he talked that he truly loves the place and has dedicated a lot of time to researching and reconstructing it. When we went to the second floor, we had seen a lot already and because the next two levels didn't have flooring rebuilt yet I thought the tour was over. But then he asked if we were ready to go to the roof. WOW! Although the view was amazing, it was Jim that made this tour one of the best parts of our trip to Ireland. Thank you Anna and Jim!

Somewhere special
A unique and special place. Jack greeted our arrival and was so helpful, and Anna welcomed us to share the beautiful spaces of her home grounds. The information provided in the cottage was excellent. The cottage was so homely and beaitifully created and crafted by Jim and styled by tbeir love of old furniture. Great water direct from well supply and the comfiest of beds. The tour of the castle with Jim sharing his knowledge and wisdom of old crafts was a superb bonus to our holiday. Some beautiful coastline and beaches to explore.

Amazing stay
We have stayed in quite a few properties in Wexford and this was by far the best! The location was perfect for the ferry and town as well as exploring the local area. The property is very well restored with lots of original features and home comforts that made it such a lovely stay. Anna was a wonderful host and made us feel so welcome. Allowing us to see the inside of the castle was a highlight of our stay! We will be recommending a stay here to all our friends and family and we will be back ourselves! Thank you Anna!

Wexford stay
Wexford was the second stop on our tour of Ireland. We enjoyed our stay at the butlerstown castle. The property is simply spectacular! We took evening walks and picked black raspberries, and fed the sheep and donkeys. The cottage was well appointed and centrally located for everything we wanted to do.

We cannot wait to return again soon!
Three generations of our family stayed in Bagenal Harvey Cottage for two nights. We loved the historic surroundings and the rural setting. The cottage had everything we needed. The garden walks were amazing. We all enjoyed an amazing dinner in Mary Barry's in nearby Kilmore as well as fish and chips from the Saltee Chipper in Kilmore Quay. Not forgetting the donkeys and sheep who all enjoyed chomping on apples each morning. Unfortunately Anna and Jim were away during our stay so we will just have to return again for another stay and a tour of the castle and gardens.

Wonderful historic stay
Beautifully resorted castle with all the amenities while still retaining all of the charm of the original building. Situated on a farm there are friendly sheep and donkeys and relaxing and beautiful grounds. Ask Jim for a tour of the keep and he will give you the entire wonderful history and what they have don to restore the castle. Brilliant man and such interesting history!

About the host

Hosted by Anna Skrine

Host profile image
Anna's family has been living at Butlerstown Castle for many generations. It has been her wish for many years to be able to share the tranquility and beauty of the place with others. Her husband Jim worked for years in London restoring heritage buildings, and running an architectural salvage business. He has done all the restoration and repair work himself to the two cottages (originally a 1600s cowhouse). Anna works with complementary therapies - and organizes workshops at Butlerstown.

Why they chose this property

We moved back to Anna's family home some years ago. People often say it is like stepping into another world coming here, it is so peaceful! The castle, or Tower House, is remarkable in that it is in such good original condition.
We are a mile from the sea as the crow flies and there are a number of good beaches within a 10 or 15 minute drive. There are also places of great natural and wild-life beauty nearby, such as Tacumshin lake, and the world-heritage Saltee Islands which are accessed from Kilmore Quay.
Anna has a range of pets, including donkeys, free range hens and sheep.

What makes this property unique

We are just 20 minutes from Wexford, and15 minutes from Ireland's main port, Rosslare Harbour. There is good access to excellent restaurants, pubs - the Lobster Pot is a well known pub/restaurant - riding stables, Johnstown Castle museum, Kilmore Quay fishing village and golf courses.
