About this property
Swiss Cottage/Chatsworth Estate
Part of the Chatsworth Collection
Any cottage in the midst of nature makes you think it comes straight out of a fairytale- and no house on the Chatsworth Estate is more romantically situated than Swiss Cottage. A picturesque building, set up high on the hill behind Chatsworth, it offers a peaceful and secluded site in which to enjoy the ultimate self-catering holiday.
Swiss Cottage boasts an idyllic secluded location and was built between 1839 and 1842 as part of the 6th Duke of Devonshire's many improvements to the Chatsworth Estate. It was designed by Joseph Paxton or his associate John Robertson, as an 'eye-catcher' in the landscape, to be admired on carriage rides or walks around the estate.
The drive up to Swiss Cottage takes you through historic Stand Wood, with its magnificent trees, where you may encounter a 'ruined' aqueduct, and other waterfalls and stone steps, designed by Paxton.
At the top of the hill, there are sensational views and a series of man-made lakes. The Emperor lake feeds the famous fountain of the same name in the Chatsworth garden, but the Swiss lake, from which the cottage takes its name, was dug out to supply water to the 1st Duke's cascade in the 1690s. You have unlimited access to this landscape during your stay.
Built as a gamekeepers cottage, the building has been completely restored by the Duchess of Devonshire, right down to the shelves of books on Swiss themes.
Dogs are welcomed at a rate of £35 per dog per stay, please advise our reservations team when making your booking that you shall be bringing a dog with you.
* Please be advised that the lake is currently drained due to essential maintenance work
Pets - allowed
The keys can be collected from the Devonshire Arms at Beeley
