About this property

Godolphin Cottage, A Beachside Family Getaway - Dog Friendly

Godolphin Cottage provides everything you need for a great holiday; fabulous accommodation, large child and pet-friendly garden and it’s just a short trip to a variety of local attractions. Located in beautiful Praa Sands, just a five minute walk from a long sandy beach, the cottage makes a perfect family getaway where you can breathe in the sea air and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding coast.

The cottage comfortably sleeps 8, has private off-road parking for four cars, and contains everything you will need for a comfortable, relaxing stay: Superfast Broadband Wi-Fi throughout, central heating and a SMART TV. There are two bedrooms with king size beds, two with twin beds as well as three bathrooms; a central lounge/dining room, kitchen, utility room and conservatory.

You can relax and unwind after a day at the beach in the enclosed gardens around the house or have a drink watching the waves on the raised decking area with its beautiful sea views.

Your pets are welcome to stay for a small extra fee (£15 per dog and a maximum of 2 dogs) and dog sitting may be arranged on request. Please note: dogs are welcome on the nearby beach except between Easter Sunday and 30 September (07:00am - 07:00pm) when a seasonal dog ban is in place. They are, however, welcome at nearby Prussia Cove all year round.

With its four bedrooms, the cottage provides a fantastic location for large or extended families, or groups of friends. Although not wheelchair accessible, the north west and east bedrooms, along with the bathroom and the lounge/diner, are all on on the same level. There are two 15cm steps down to the kitchen, one 15cm step down to the sun parlour, and three 20cm steps down to the two southerly bedrooms and the walk in wet room. The north west bedroom has a large walk in shower in the ensuite. For your little ones there is a cot, highchair, toddler bed guard and a step up stool and toddler seat in the bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need during your stay.

A wonderful destination if you have kids to entertain. They’ll love the beach which is great for sand castles and the shoreline is great for splashing about. Either end of the beach are rock pools with crabs, anemones, shrimps etc, some even big enough for small children to snorkel in. You can rest assured with lifeguard cover during weekends in April and full lifeguard cover from the beginning of May to the end of September. Out of season there is weekend lifeguard cover in October and during the half term week. .

Situated in the south west-facing bend between the Lizard and west Penwith, Praa Sands' mile-long sandy beach is backed with sheltering sand dunes and its easily accessible position is enjoyed by families having fun in the shallows while further out the surf brigade take on some surprisingly big waves.

Praa is a popular surfing beach and is well known for its powerful waves. When the surf is big and blown out on the north coast you will often find a better wave here. When it's good here, it's as good as any beach in Cornwall; the problem is when the surf is good the water gets very busy, particularly around high tide but the lifeguards separate the swimming area from the surfing area. There is a surf school, board and wetsuit hire if you fancy trying to catch a wave yourself, plus kayak and paddle board hire.

You can take the family for unforgettable daytrips to nearby Flambards, St. Michael’s Mount, or for a splash in the UK’s largest lido pool in Penzance. Nearby are sailing at Newlyn and Marazion, and fishing and scenic tours from Penzance. For those that like walking, the south west coastal path takes you along stunning cliff tops, westward to Perranuthnoe and eastward to Porthleven. Further afield the Lizard peninsula boasts an array of fine coastal walks passing unspoilt villages and sheltered coves and beaches.

Minutes from the house you’ll find a lively pub right on the beach front, general stores, a surf shop, a beach café, a golf club and a garage with a convenience store.

There are also some interesting geological features along the beach and it has recently been recognised as a Regionally Important Geological/Geomorphical Site. For example, about a third of the way along the beach is a black platform at the base of the dunes which is in fact a 1,300 year old peat bed made up of the remains of a forest that once covered this area.

Those looking for a bit of history won’t be disappointed - just inland from the middle of the beach is Pengersick Castle. Built for refuge and defence, its four-storey tower dates back to the 16th century and was part of an extensive fortified Tudor mansion that no longer exists. It has some of the interesting features you would associate with this kind of building including facilities for pouring burning oil on your enemies!

Pengersick is also rumoured to be haunted. It's possible this reputation was spread by local smugglers to discourage visitors. However, the bedroom in the tower is said to be Britain's most haunted and is a favourite with ghost hunters. It is said that the ghost of a black-robed monk wanders the grounds. Its possible to arrange tours around the castle and its beautiful grounds. It is also registered for small weddings.

There are ties with smuggling and wrecking and the house at Pengersick is said to have been the birth place of John Carter, also known as the King of Prussia. Contraband was landed at Praa Sands and apparently unloaded at the west-end of the beach into a tunnel that once led to the house at Pengersick.

Perfectly placed cottage for exploring Cornwall
Our experience using VRBO wasn’t good at all, but the liaison with the owner was great. I am hobbling about whilst due for a knee replacement so the cottage was perfectly laid out for my wobbly mobility. We were able to take our 2 dogs with us too and so the proximity to Praa Sands and its beautiful headland was a definite bonus. the cottage is perfectly well equipped and even has beach towels for use (the weather wasn’t great for swimming LOL). We have given further feedback to the owner but would certainly return and definitely recommend the cottage to others. We had an amazing Sunday lunch at the Queens arms in Breage (just wonderful) and an equally great meal in the Packet Inn. For breakfast/ lunches, the Cabin at Perranuthnoe and the cafe at Marazion are really good and they even cooked extra sausages for the dogs!

Quaint Cottage
Wonderful time at Godolphin Cottage which is a 10 minute stroll down hill to Praa Sands beach. Plenty of space to park 3 cars off road. Barbeque area is small but it worked well for us. Patio area was also small but had the afternoon sun and we could all just about sit and enjoy a drink. Very much a beach theme to the decor and the lounge/dining room had ample space for us all to sit. There were 8 of us but unfortunately there was only 7 dining chairs, however, this did not stop us have a great time.

Wonderful Cosy Cottage
Very welcoming cottage, well stocked kitchen with everything you need to cook with. Thank you for the teas, coffee, milk, biscuits and toiletries! Big sofas and table …enough space for 8 people and the dog. Big Coop close. Comfy beds and plenty of towels .. and beach towels too ! Pete and Sheena excellent hosts. Weather wasn’t great but we got a few walks on beautiful local beaches which were a quick drive away. We probably would have done more walking from the cottage to beach but had a disabled elderly relative with us. She uses a Walker and coped with the steps, which are wide enough for a tri walker down to the front door. Just 2 steps up to the lounge from kitchen, where she could then move directly to the en-suite double room. Lovely enclosed Garden too.

Excellent vacation home. Accurately described in VRBO. Great communication with hosts.
We are a family of four with a daughter 19 and a son 15. We stayed at Godlopin Cottage from July 9th to 16th 2022. The cottage is very spacious, comfortable, nicely decorated, well equipped, and very accurately described in the VRBO listing and the photographs. We were very comfortable at the cottage with more than enough room for all of us. There is also ample car parking in the private and gated drive. The cottage is located in a particularly beautiful part of Cornwall with many great things to do and see very close by, including Praa Sands beach, St Michael's Mount, Gunwalloe Church, Gwithian Towans, Coast Boat trips, Seal Sanctuary, etc. There are also many great pubs and restaurants within a few minutes' drive and in particular, The Sandbar at the beach and The Packet Inn are great places to eat with very good menus and food. Our hosts Peter and Sheena were excellent and attentive, with great support and communication before, during, and after our stay. We would definitely come back to Praa Sands and stay at Godolphin Cottage again for a great family vacation. Thank you, Peter and Sheena.

great stay

Superb Family Holiday
Godolphin Cottage is in an excellent location a few minutes walk down to the beech and only a few minutes drive to many of the main South West Cornwall attractions in particular one of our favourites Porthleven with its beautiful harbour and many good restaurants and takaways. The proerty itself is a good size with a large well kept garden, BBQ and seating surrounding the property. Certainly spacious enough for our 6 adults and 2 young children with 3 cars. The cottage was clean and well equipped with just about everything you need plus a few nice little extras such as toys for the young ones and a selection of books. The only thing that would have made the stay a little easier would be a tumble dryer particularly as we had a few rainy days. Overall a very enjoyable visit.

Stay in Cornwall
We loved our time at Godolphin Cottage. The location was great, peaceful with a beautiful garden to enjoy. Our hosts were very thoughtful and went out of their way to ensure my 97 year old mother-in-law would have everything she needed. And the cottage suited our party of 6 perfectly.

Pretty and well maintained cottage and garden
We really enjoyed our holiday staying in this lovely cottage which was a short walk to Praa sands beach which is a stunning beach. The cottage and garden was in a great location and well maintained with all facilities we required and communication with the owners was efficient, helpful and welcoming. They were particularly accommodating with providing extra bits for our 3 year old and the garden was safe and enclosed which meant we enjoyed BBQs and it felt secure for our dog to wander. Thank you Pete and Sheena for a great stay.

it was so nice to get away as we thought we would have to cancel yet again because of this covid virus. we know the area pretty well as we have been holidaying in surrounding years since childhood. lovely property with everything we needed and the owner introduced herself to us whilst out walking which was lovely and then we kept bumping into her. the most important thing for us was safety for our youngest daughter and our dog and with a fully enclosed garden we were able to ensure this thankyou
