About this property

The Hoolet - luxury holiday house in the heart of beautiful Perthshire

The Hoolet is a comfortable, contemporary home ideally situated in a quiet conservation area within Crieff itself. It is a few minutes walk from the local supermarket, the shops and the many excellent restaurants and pubs available in the town. In the opposite direction, also a few minutes from the door, is Macrosty Park with its walks and play area leading to the beautiful Lady Mary’s Walk alongside the River Earn.

4 star Visit Scotland Award again in 2023, Silver Green Tourism Award (EPC bands C, 77 &74). STL Licence Number: PK12163F. We can accommodate up to 6 adults plus a toddler under 3 years old.

Our home offers spacious accommodation with a large, comfy lounge, well equipped kitchen and dining room, a utility room with a roomy hot cupboard, a king bedroom with en-suite, two twin bedrooms and a large family bathroom. There is a study with a desk which can also double as a baby room. Outside there is a drive with ampleoff-street parking for four cars and a beautifully planted private garden accessed by steps.

We have allergy issues ourselves, so we have tried to minimise the allergen load in the house. The bed linen is luxurious 100% cotton, and cleaning materials and procedures are eco-friendly. No animals are permitted in the property.

The Hoolet is generously equipped -

Gas-fired central heating, log burner effect electric stove in the living room fireplace

Smart TV, DVD player
Superfast fibre broadband with WIFI
Bluetooth stereo radio/CD player
Selection of DVDs, CDs, books and games

Washing machine & tumble drier, dishwasher, gas hob, electric ovens, microwave, coffee maker with filter papers, fridge-freezer, teabags, instant coffee, salt & pepper, herbs, cooking oil

Bed linen, towels, hand soap and toilet rolls are provided.

Travel cot and high chair are available on request in advance.

We have a pay-as-you-go 7kW EV charging point for the use of guests.

Garage space for storing bikes, canoes, golf equipment etc is available on request in advance.

This is a house with three flights of stairs internally and many more steps externally, so it might be a challenge for people with significant mobility problems. There is wheelchair access from the pavement to the front door: that level of the house has the lounge and a bedroom with a king-size bed and an ensuite with toilet, wash basin and shower. The other bedrooms (both twin-bedded) and bathroom are one and two flights of stairs above, while the kitchen, dining room, utility room and back door are all on a level which is flight of stairs (with seven steps and a handrail on one side) below the level of the front door. The front doorway opens to 640mm, and can be opened to 1300mm by using the second leaf. The internal doorways are 700mm wide. There are four steps to the back door on the outside, and two flights of stairs with eight steps each down to the back garden. The openings in the front wall onto the street do not have gates.

No pets or animals are permitted (this is because some of our own regular guests have severe allergy problems with a wide range of animals, even "hypoallergenic" ones, unfortunately: one is particularly sensitive to hair and dander from cats and dogs, especially Labradors).

Crieff offers an excellent base for touring, walking, cycling and golf. In addition there is a wide range of alternative activities from whisky tasting at Glenturret (Scotland's oldest working distillery, now with a Lalique bar and Michelin-starred restaurant) and Tullibardine Distilleries to quad biking at the Crieff Hydro. There is no shortage of history here either, with standing stones, Roman camps, Scotland's oldest lending library at Innerpefferay, the world's first earthquake detector and the only preserved British WWII Prisoner of War camp at nearby Cultybraggan. Crieff Visitor Centre has more information about the history of the area, including it's past as a centre of cattle droving. You can pop in and see their glass blowers working at Caithness Glass at the Visitor centre. The Strathearn Art Space just up the road often has cultural events from comedy to film nights to plays and the Leisure Centre has a public swimming pool and courts for hire.
See http://www.visitcrieff.scot/walking-in-crieff/ for more walks from our front door. Or you can see the sights by hopping aboard the excellent local bus service (no.45).

The Crieff Hydro's 900-acre estate provides a fantastic backdrop for horse riding & pony treks (all abilities catered for), mountain biking, archery and golf, and boasts a 4 star Spa and Sauna for those wanting a little rest and relaxation.
There are challenging golf courses to be found nearby at Crieff, Muthill, Comrie and St. Fillans, but Perthshire boasts many, many more golf courses – see https://www.golfperthshire.com/

Perthshire is a great place to cycle - see https://www.cyclinguk.org/cycle/cycling-perth-kinross for more information and ideas.

The Club at Gleneagles provides the opportunity to play a little more golf, shoot, fish and try your hand at falconry.
Perth and Stirling are close by and Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow with all their many attractions are little more than an hour away.
Why not visit the fabulous V & A Museum just beside Scott's polar exploration ship the "Endurance" on Dundee's riverside? HMS Unicorn, a Royal Navy frigate built in 1824 lies nearby and is also well worth a visit.
Perth, the Fair City, has an active cultural life – see https://horsecross.co.uk/ for more information

Brotherhood Jolly

The property was a short walk to the town, and central for what we wanted it for. nice place as a base for the 3 days we had it for. We didn't really interact with the property manager whilst there everything seemed quite self explanatory

Lovely house, great location

A cosy home from home with everything you could possibly want. Easy key handover process on arrival. The house is modern, really clean and spacious with lots of different areas to sit, both outside and inside. The undercover outdoor area is a great space which we used a lot despite some inclement weather. It was great to have the town and park within short walking distance. We had a lovely holiday.

Fabulous stay at The Hoolet in Crieff

We had a wonderful holiday staying at The Hoolet in Crieff. The accommodation was ideal for us as a family with young kids and also having my retired parents staying with us. We had all the necessary amenities at our disposal. The kids loved running around in the garden and playing at the nearby park. The property is also very nicely located within Crieff with only a short walk to the main shops and supermarket, where there are a reasonable number of very good lunch and dinner options. Crieff is also ideal for venturing out on longer journeys in any direction, e.g travelling up to the highlands or venturing east or south for city day trips to St. Andrew’s, Dundee, Edinburgh or Glasgow. Overall a great holiday!

Great location and great home for families

Our family (my husband and I, his parents, and our 4- & 8- year old boys) stayed at the Hoolet for two weeks in August, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. From the moment we arrived, Hamish made sure we were comfortable and understood everything we needed to know about the house. It was spacious, spotlessly clean, the beds were comfortable, and it was incredibly well equipped. The kitchen had every tool you might need to cook comfortably at home. Our boys made full use of the back garden and loved getting to explore (and sword fight) amongst the landscaping. The location was also great. We were able to walk to the shops and restaurants in town. The included parking meant we didn’t have to worry about the car after our adventures further afield. We also used some of the maps provided to explore the walking trails close to the house, and they were absolutely beautiful – highly recommend! You can tell the owners use the house themselves – everything you would want in your own home to make your life easier was there. We all enjoyed the house and location, and we will definitely be back!

About the host

Hosted by Andrew, Heather and Hamish

Host profile image
We've recently retired from public service and have family near Crieff, and more recently become grandparents to a wee lad who lives near The Hoolet with his parents. Our interests include music, canoeing, woodturning, cooking and being outdoors. We love the walks round here and canoeing on Loch Earn. We've been proud to get a Green Tourism Award for The Hoolet as sustainability is a subject close to our hearts.

Why they chose this property

THe Hoolet is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding very beautiful area which is steeped in much history and interest. Glorious scenery, good walking, wildlife, pre-historic and Roman remains, country houses, gardens, etc etc! The house is very comfortable with interesting design features and is well equipped.

Some of our recent guests have left the following reviews -

"Such a lovely place. Loads of space, spotless and really tastefully designed. Walking distance to centre of town and good walking routes. We were here on Highland games weekend, it was loads of fun. Hosts were very helpful."

"I couldn't recommend The Hoolet highly enough. The house was spotlessly clean, really well-equipped and very comfortable. It suited my family (including two children under 6) perfectly. The owners were really responsive to messages and go out of their way to leave helpful information at the house. The Hoolet is in an ideal location for exploring Crieff and we're really glad we've discovered it."

"Beautiful house with lots of space. Sparklingly clean. Creiff is a great location as well."

"This is a fantastic holiday home with everything you could possibly want. It’s spotlessly clean and exceptionally comfortable. Andrew & Heather are also wonderful hosts."

What makes this property unique

Some more reviews -

"This is a beautiful, stylish home within easy walking distance of Crieff town centre. The house is spotlessly clean , very stylishly decorated, welcoming and very well equipped with everything you could need, and a lot more beside. Cannot fault the Hoolet or its hosts. We've only been back a few hours and have already recommended the Hoolet to friends, and we hope to return again too."

"I stayed in the Hoolet with a few friends for a holiday over Easter. The manager of the property, Hamish, met us as we arrived and was very welcoming and helpful. The same goes for many of the locals who we bumped into around the neighbourhood and had spontaneous friendly chats with. As for the house itself, it's really lovely. The beds are comfy, everywhere was immaculately clean and all the furnishings looked brand new. My favourite parts were the social spaces like the living room, kitchen and dining room which were all great to hang-out in. Overall a really great place to stay. Highly recommended."

"Wonderful home, much larger than the photos suggest. Spotlessly clean and a lot of nice touches like games, dvds, tea/coffee etc. Andrew & Heather were super prompt in their replies and always super accommodating and friendly. We had a wonderful time over a weekend stay. Cheers guys."
