About this property

RHYD-YR-EIRIN, spectacular Snowdonia cottage in mountains by the sea

Chosen by 'The Sunday Times' as one of the top 14 off-the-beaten-track holiday cottages in the British Isles, Rhyd-yr-Eirin is a modernised but unspoilt 17th Century cottage situated amid some of Snowdonia National Park's most spectacular scenery. Surrounded by mountains overlooking the sea, Rhyd-yr-Eirin is a mile from the nearest house and is very peaceful and secluded - yet the historic town of Harlech, with its busy shops, famous castle, golf course & magnificent beaches, is just 3 miles away.

Rhyd-yr-Eirin has been lovingly restored by our family since it was found ruined and abandoned in the late 1950s. Today it remains primarily a family home, rather than a commercial holiday let, and its many personal, family touches give it a very special atmosphere. Lots of people who visit Rhyd-yr-Eirin end up holidaying here regularly every year - some people have stayed with us, first as children and now as adults, for over 50 years!

Rhyd-yr-Eirin comfortably sleeps six people in three large bedrooms and is ideal for families, while the cosy, romantic atmosphere of the cottage and its isolated, very peaceful location, makes it perfect for couples too. With a brand new bathroom and a traditional homely kitchen & dining room, the cottage remains genuinely historic - a beautiful oak-beamed sitting room has a comfortable sofa and armchairs surrounding a warm and cosy C17th fireplace with a wood-burning stove. Bookshelves are filled with interesting books to read, including many reference books on local history, wildlife, visitor attractions, and nearby walks.

Outside, surrounding the cottage, is a lovely stone-walled garden with beautiful flowers and a BBQ overlooking the sea, as well as a separate garden surrounding the natural mountain spring from which our delicious (and UV-treated) private water supply flows. For children there is a home-made half-sized ping-pong table in the barn, a seesaw in the garden, a small playhouse converted from the old pigsty - and a sand pit in the old feeding trough! In addition, all around the cottage, the fields are a wide open natural playground and children can run around in complete freedom.

Situated amidst spectacular mountains at the heart of Snowdonia National Park, there are many excellent walks that start from the cottage, often with fantastic views of the ocean just 3 miles away. Harlech Beach, with its four mile long stretch of golden sand overlooked by Harlech's historic medieval castle, is often acclaimed as one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the UK, with excellent, safe swimming. In the local area there are a lots of other activities to enjoy, including golf, fishing, sailing, horse-riding, mountain biking, climbing, white-water rafting and wildlife watching. There are many historic narrow gauge steam railways nearby, plus the spectacular rack & pinion railway up Mount Snowdon. There's also lots of fascinating local history to investigate, including many ancient forts and stone circles, quirky Portmeirion, and of course famous Harlech Castle.

NB: We rent Rhyd-yr-Eirin for a minimum stay of a week, Saturday to Saturday. Duvets and pillows are provided, but you need to bring your own sheets, duvet covers, pillow cases and towels. There is a private track leading to the cottage from the nearest road, but this is easily drivable by almost all cars except very low-slung 'boy racer' models! You can bring one well-trained, sheep-friendly dog. Electricity used during your stay, and any telephone calls, are charged extra at standard rates, payable at the end of your holiday, but we're pleased to provide wood for the wood-burning stove free of charge... If you come to stay at Rhyd-yr-Eirin, we hope that like us you'll fall in love with its unique charms, and will want to return year after year!

Wonderful house
We loved staying here, the house has been done with such care and attention and is very comfortable. We particularly liked sitting by the excellent woodburning stove on the few grey evenings and walking up the hills behind. It is idyllically situated and the perfect place for a holiday.

Rural, rustic and really lovely
The electricity was out when we arrived due to storm Darrah but we were able to light a fire and there were torches there to help light our way. We were greeted on Sunday morning with a flask of hot water and an update on the situation. Communication was excellent and the issue was resolved by Monday and didn't affect our stay at all.

Fantastic Seclusion
It was good to get away from it all in this remote secluded home. Everything we needed was here including plenty of wood for the burner which was needed to warm the living space up after we arrived. Great location for walks with dog and exploring in all directions. A unique place with only the peaceful sound of nature that I hope we will be able to visit again one day.

Perfect escape for some nothingness
What a fabulous location. Tucked away and really felt away from the real world. The cottage itself is very cosy and contains everything we needed. Plenty of walks from the door. Highly recommended.

Tranquil getaway
Rhyd-yr-Eirin is a truly special and unique place which exceeded our expectations (We really needed to switch off and get away from it all). We loved reading the history of the cottage and its renovation throughout the years, very inspiring. A holiday we’ll never forget and hope to be back in the future.

Remote and romantic
High above Harlech in the mountains with good walks and bike rides nearby, this place is heaven. You feel as if you have been invited to stay by the family - it is lived in, old and comfortable. A wood burning stove keeps you cosy, whatever the weather. If you want to get away from it all - this place is perfect.

This has been one of the best holidays I have ever had. The location is outstanding and beaches are the incredible. The cottage is everything you could wish for. There is no working TV as advertised but it didn't matter as we were out having fun. Our dog also had a very happy time. Please be aware though that your dog must be FULLY TRAINED around sheep and livestock.

Wonderful Location - Beautiful Cottage!
Our family of four adults all had a lovely week at this cottage which is one of the best locations and cottages we have stayed at over the last 20+ years. What stands out for me is the location. We saw one group of walkers all week, other than that we were totally remote and off-grid. Just what we wanted. We trucked off to the mountains of Snowdonia, saw beaches, ate at local pubs, and conquered castles! Shops close by, and walks in to the fells straight from the front door.. which was great having a working cocker spaniel that never stops. Would highly recommend.

Hidden gem
We loved our stay in this cosy cottage. It was very well equipped, comfy beds and a log fire, with free wood provided, for rainy days. Exquisite isolated setting with walks in every direction from the cottage and 20 minutes drive to the beautiful beach at Harlech. We recommend the delicious ice creams (and hand made chocolates) opposite the castle and the deli/grocer in the centre. Excellent communication with cottage owner. We very much hope to go there again.

Vielen Dank Chris. Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt.

Wunderschönes Haus in sehr einsamer Lage

Fantastic Xmas Getaway
We stayed at the cottage over Xmas and could not be more impressed the location is stunning the property itself was fantastic and had everything we needed. The location is not to far from Harlech Beach which is also fantastic for dog walks. We would recommend this property to anyone who wants to get away from the pace of modern life and relax in some stunning scenery.
