About this property

*** Sol du Mazel *** Child Friendly Holidays. Dordogne. DISCOUNTS available!

Sol du Mazel; is made up of two interconnected gites Rose Barn (3 bedrooms) and Hope Cottage (2 bedrooms).

Sol du Mazel has two, connected, wonderful open-plan kitchen and living areas occupying both ground floors. The well equipped kitchens should have everything you need. Though there are comfortable sofas inside, most people sit under one or other of the two abri to relax and dine outdoors.

Upstairs in Rose Barn there is a double bedroom which can take a cot , a twin bed room (which can also take a cot) and a bunk bedroom with full size beds.

Upstairs in Hope Cottage there is a double bedroom which can take a cot and a twin bed room (which can also take a cot) with two sumptuous single beds.

We make a point of being Child Friendly and have pretty well all the equipment needed for babies, toddlers, kids, tweenies and teenagers, though some of this has been removed if it cannot be safely cleaned to provide Covid-19 safeguarding. Please check with us should you require particular items.

Sol du Mazel, is situated in a most beautiful, quiet, isolated, rural setting, yet it is close enough to the village of St Pompon to take a morning stroll down the age old footpath to the local boulangerie for fresh croissants.

Situated in the Dordogne, near Domme, Daglan and Castlenaud, nestled in 2.5 Ha (4 acres) of its own land the two gîtes overlook a walnut orchard and wild flower and grass meadow. On the other side of the valley the woods are the home to deer and wild boars which can often be seen at dawn if you manage to get up that early.
Rest and relax by the gorgeous 12 x 5 m swimming pool (heated from May through to end Sept - so that it is still pleasant).

Watch the children play on the trampoline, play fort or the climbing frame while the grown-ups might build up the energy to read a book in a hammock or from the shaded gazebo overlooking the meadow.

Later enjoy a barbecue outside sitting under the shade of the abri, or perhaps visit the gourmet restaurant in the village (remember to book). Though it is not yet confirmed whether it will go ahead this coming summer, in previous years, from the end of June to the end of August every Saturday evening the village square and road is taken over by the ‘Marché Gourmand Nocturne’ which can best be described as a street party where everyone is welcome and all sorts of food and drink are available to enjoy.

Guests will be completely private and secluded. There is no interaction with our local team and guests unless there is an emergency. We provide contact numbers for this. Social distancing measures will be strictly adhered to to ensure safety and protection of our guests, our local support team and any tradespeople needed.

Fabulous house in the heart of the Dordogne

We had a fantastic week at Sol du Mazel which is located along a small road about 10 - 15 minutes walk west of St Pompom. This very pretty village has a boulangerie and small supermarket as well as a restaurant. You are also just a short drive away from Daglan and Domme The house has a fabulous pool which was a very comfortable temperature and is surrounded by wonderful lawns for football or badminton There is also a wendy house, castles and trampolines and table tennis to keep all ages occupied. The house is fabulously quiet - a real escape for city dwellers. We found some lovely bike rides that start and finish at the house including a nice route down into St Pompom, past eth supermarket then north west along the D60 and then turning back via Duriat Jean Paul. A large part of the D60 can be avoided by using the Chem to Tramway. For the keener cyclist there is a lovely route via Daglan to Castlenaud la Chapelle, Domme and then back round to St Pompom via Daglan. We would recommend Domme for trip as well as Les Jardins de Marqueyssac. We are a family with teenaged kids and we loved the house but it would also be the ideal house for two families to visit together. We were only there for a week but wished that we could have stayed longer!

Fantastic Holiday - Idyllic

We are just back from an Idyllic 2 week stay in Sol Du Mazel and we loved it. Beautiful, rural, peaceful - a real chance to relax. St Pompom is the most gorgeous little village. Hope Cottage is so well set up it is staggering - 'clean and well maintained' does not even half cover it . Everything you need and plenty more besides, our 2 young daughters said they felt like princesses on the first night and adored playing with all the toys and new stories. The outside space is AMAZING, so much fun to be had - they didn't know what to play with first. Hours and hours of outdoor fun for all the family. The pool another dimension again. We did not want to leave.... the beautiful views, the peace, the lavender hedge.... so much else, we would absolutely recommend and would love to return ourselves. Thank you so much

Beautiful family home in huge ‘park’

Rose Barn is every bit as good as everyone says. As we approached for the first time, our 9-year old said ‘what’s that park?’ And indeed, the grounds look like nothing so much as a grassy children’s park, scattered with climbing frames and slides, and with a beautiful large pool. It was the pool that proved the real highlight for our children (9 and 11): it’s clean, modern, very well maintained, and warmer than other outdoor pools we’ve used. And because we were sharing it with only one other family, we often had it entirely to ourselves. The barn itself was brilliant. It’s very spacious, with loads of room for relaxing and dining, and the best equipped kitchen I think I’ve ever encountered. For smaller children there are plenty of toys, books and other equipment such as high chairs and stair gates. The location is also perfect: easy walking distance to the pretty village of St Pompont (with baker, butcher, pharmacy and small supermarket) but separated enough to be completely quiet. The crickets take over at dusk - quite a sound! It’s a short drive to some of the Dordogne’s most famous sights. Our neighbouring family were delightful and we enjoyed sharing a barbecue together one night. In short, we thoroughly recommend Rose Barn for a very comfortable and relaxing stay.

Superb holiday retreat

Stayed out of season (October 17) to use both cottages between extended family. This meant we could open the intervening door during the day to enjoy meals together and close it at night for more privacy. The property was immaculately presented and very comfortably furnished. I particularly liked being able use the log burning stove in evenings although a useful addition would be a bin for the ash. This is an ideal place for those seeking a quiet break but still within walking distance of a village with a butcher, restaurant and supermarket. The easiest way into the village is to follow the road but do try the old footpath for a better view. We no longer have small children so can't comment on that area other than there seemed to be plenty of activities available. I was impressed by the construction of two small play forts in the grounds complete with arrow slits and battlements. This holiday is ideal for seclusion hunters

Tranquillity personified

Rose Barn - Sol du Mazel gave us everything we needed for our family holiday plus 70th Birthday celebration. Last year we visited Hope Cottage (next Door) and enjoyed ourselves fully, so this year we wanted to repeat that and have both Hope Cottage & Rose Barn so more of our family could join us. The garden and pool looked superb and the new gazebo was excellent for breakfasts, quite times and our birthday party. We also found plenty to do in the area i.e. Eating out, The Dinosaur park, The Zoo, The Aquarium, canoeing on the Dordogne and Saint Emilion.

French perfection for the whole family

This place was amazing. We've stayed in a lot of places in Dordogne and wider France. It was by far the most idyllic and best equipped place we've encountered. You've thought of absolutely everything. We couldn't fault one single thing. Top effort and thanks for a wonderful holiday. The imperfect weather did not detract from the enjoyment for any of us; children and adults. We took the car and loaded it to the gunnels with games, toys etc to ensure kids were entertained. We needn't have bothered. This place has the lot. Highly recommended. And obviously the area is typical Dordogne: BEAU

Summer fun in Rose barn

We stay in the Dordogne every summer and this is the best gite we have found. The barn is beautifully positioned, away from it all but not too far from local facilities, on a large plot with a good size pool, beautifully finished and well equipped with everything you could ask for. Our children are 19, 17 and 14 and they loved the gite, pool and local area too. The owners are very helpful. We aim to be back! We went canoeing twice from Castelnaud (Bernard, the pool maintainer, recommended it and got us a discount) and visited the castle at Castelnaud. Monpazier on market day was fun as was market day in Daglan (a beautiful little village close by).

Great family rental

We rented out Rose barn and Hope cottage with friends. There was everything and more we could need especially with young children (potty, high chairs, toys, kids cutlery etc). There is a large outdoor space with lots to keep the kids amused in a peaceful setting. There is a boulangerie (highly recommend the almond croissant)and lovely restaurant within walking distance (15 min). It was a real home from home.

Wonderful comfortable very well equipped cottage

In June this year we enjoyed a fantastic week at Rose Barn, the cottage was lovely. Comfortable, clean, spacious and furnished and equipped to a very high standard. The weather was great very hot and sunny and the lovely pool was a real blessing! Lots of toys and swimming aids provided and plenty of loungers and hammocks to relax in. Our party didn't include anyone under 18yrs but the grounds had lots of toys and equipment to keep children amused and happy. There were also plenty of toys and games inside for cooler/rainy days. I have been recommending the cottages to everyone I know with a young family! The Dordogne is a beautiful area, the Chateau at Castlenaud was worth a visit. We also enjoyed Sarlat, which we visited on market day and canoeing on the river was great fun. We had a wonderful holiday at Rose Barn and would definitely love to return!

Stable Cottage in Kent vacanza indimenticabile!

I dont' know if it's better to write in french or in italian, my family live in Brussels and we are franch/italian speaking!Anyway it was a fantastic holiday....

Fantastic accommodation in beautiful surroundings

The accommodation was first class. Literally everything has been thought of and there was nothing we needed that wasn't there. The cottage was bright and beautifully decorated. The kitchen was well equipped. The lounge area was perfect for comfortable evenings in. There is even English TV! The pool area is very well thought out with plenty of seating and toys for the children. The kids loved the trampoline and swings and being able to ride their bikes around the vast garden space. We really enjoyed a bike ride from Daglan to Chateaunaud, it was flat so very easy to cycle and beautiful scenery all through the corn fields. We had an excellent week and will definitely be going back!

Rose Cottage is a quiet haven – great for families

The living space is light, airy, homely and really well equipped. A kitchen with everything you need, a large dining table when you want to eat inside and a large table outside (where we ate mostly). Sofas are comfortable and a TV with UK channels (if you have time to sit and watch them). Upstairs is wooden floors and tranquil – all the bedrooms are well fitted out and fans in each of them (needed in the summer). A decent sized and well appointed bathroom, with a great separate shower and bath (and plenty of hot water). Linen, towels and everything was of good quality and made us feel very much at home. The outside is a great space for kids to play (safely) and for adults to chill. The pool is perfect with a huge number of inflatables and toys for children (and adults so inclined). Saint Pompont is an attractive small village with the everyday basics you’ll need and easy access to the what the rest of the Dordogne and Lot have to offer.

Amazing holiday

We have had a wonderful stay at Rose Barn with our 3 year old and 16 month old - our first holiday with our children. The house is beautiful and equipped with everything you need for a family holiday with young children. We spent our mornings visiting local markets, afternoons relaxing back at the house, and evenings eating al fresco on the terrace. The garden and pool are fabulous, with so much space for the children to roam safely, and lots of play equipment for them. Katie and Andy (and their local team) could not have been more helpful both in the planning of, and during, our stay. We can highly recommend the personal chef service - a delicious and very welcome meal on our arrival. We have had a truly memorable holiday and hope to return again!

Absolutely Stunning

Rose Barn is an absolutely stunning property with a gorgeous pool and fantastic outdoor area. It is situated in a stunning part of the Dordogne with some beautiful towns nearby. The property is so very well equipped for children. From toys and equipment inside the property to inflatables around the pool. We have never stayed anywhere that catered so well. The kitchen is very well equipped and the bedrooms beautifully furnished. I would highly recommend this property to all friends and relatives

We wanted to create a holiday home that was a happy place; overflowing with love and laughter; safe but filled with adventure. We wanted a place that can be special for someone at every age. Whether still feeding from a high-chair; learning to dive or swim a width for the first time; climb a tree fort; explore the woods; sunbathe ,read, walk, cycle or canoe; or simply drink fine wines and taste gourmet local cheeses.
We designed our holiday home to be like this because we knew that as our family grew we wanted it to be the place each person could look forward to returning to the following year. We wanted a place where memories could be created, where the photos are simply aide-memoirs to the joyful experiences shared together.

Why they chose this property

Sol du Mazel is nestled into an idyllic rural setting , with the two gîtes looking over the meadow up towards a small woodland from which deer and wild boar can sometimes be seen at dawn. Sol du Mazel is just a short walk from the beautiful village of St Pompon, is nestled into the lovely mix of undulating land covered in woods and meadows, where poppies add a splash of colour to every roadside. The textured sandstone houses of the villages in the area are so picturesque they could easily be described as the ‘Cotswolds’ of France. Yet when we bought the place in 2010 the property was a far cry from what it is now. The cottage was, to say the least, in ‘a state’ and the barn was just that, a barn which years ago had been used to dry tobacco.

We set about not just restoring but re-invigorating. The two gîtes at Sol du Mazel are Hope Cottage and Rose Barn. Both have huge open-plan downstairs rooms built to the highest of standards and quality. Large doors connect you with the outside living space where many a meal is enjoyed in the cool of the morning or warmth of the evening sun. The bedrooms, with the chestnut wood floors and wrought iron beds are so quiet and peaceful it is hard not to have a wonderful night of sleep.

What makes this property unique

Its a simply beautiful setting. Somehow we manage to notice how loud the birdsong seems to be, yet never breaking the peace and quiet we feel.

Normally the loudest noise is the splashes from the pool and the laughter of our children.

Previously used as two holiday gites, the property was often used by larger families, enjoying the interconnected door and the shared pool. Since Covid-19 has changed everyone's need for seclusion, exclusion and privacy within a family unit/bubble, we decided to only rent out Sol du Mazel as a single unit. Now we show as a new listing, but if you look at Hope Cottage (unit 10068586) we had 14 ratings at 5* and Rose Barn (unit 10068584) had 18 ratings at 5*
