Town: The lovely, picturesque, 'Maypole village' of Ovington is situated on the south bank of the River Tees, between County Durham and North Yorkshire boundaries. Barnard Castle stands on the site of an ancient Roman fort, which crosses the river Tees. The medieval ruins of the castle still tower over the river and are well worth a visit. Known affectionately as ‘Barney’ by residents and visitors alike, the town boasts cobble streets, yards and back lanes, which were first laid out in the 12th century. The Pennine and Teesdale Ways, the medieval Raby Castle with deer park and magnificent waterfalls at High Force are all nearby, and Durham, Richmond and Ripon are within driving distance.
