Too many concerns this year
Our family returned to this house this summer after a fun week last year. Unfortunately, this visit was met with many challenges. When we arrived, there was nowhere to store our rented boat- personal boats that were not there last summer were taking up all the spaces. (The owner knew we rented a boat again, as he had to submit a letter in order for us to receive a permit for Lake Summit.) When we reached out to ask about this, his solution was to tie a boat to the front of the dock which is the only swimming area. We voiced frustration, and the response was, "I appreciate your visit. I'm happy to refund your stay. Please look at the bright side. You chose to return." This is not an appropriate response to someone paying a lot to rent your property.Other issues that arose were electrical safety- a broken bulb in a bathroom that sparked when the switch was on, shower heads did not work, and the dock was in serious need of repair- broken steps, splintering wood that got into many children's feet, and raised nails and screws. These are sizable problems on their own, and once added up, they are unacceptable for such a pricey rental property. It's a shame because the house had been a great fit for our family, but there were too many negative aspects this year to give a positive review.

Camp Mamie 2022
Fabulous location on a lake that is dear to my heart for my children and grandchildren. How is big and comfortable- basically well supplied kitchen. The housekeeping could have been better - not one roll of TP in any bathroom to start and no blankets on most of beds. There were several instances of roaches and one toilet that needed a plumber. Ice maker didn’t make ice in either the big one or the refrigerator. Kershaw was informed of all this and responded quickly but was unable to fix the ice problem. A plumber did come to fix toilet. The house has a great history - but suffers from lack of maintenance on the outside and we had to hammer down a bunch of boards on boathouse deck. All in all everyone had a greta time - yard is fabulous and the kids caught lots of fireflies. Blinds on the main level bedrooms would be nice - mainly for privacy.

Beautiful property on Lake Summit
This is a beautiful piece of property directly on Lake Summit. It has beautiful views of the lake that can be seen from the main rooms, bedrooms, patio, deck, walking paths, and of course the dock. This is an older home that seems to have a lot of family history, plus an updated kitchen and some bathrooms. The home accommodated our large (12 adults) group very nicely. Our group brought some bikes and borrowed some that were available in the garage. We thoroughly enjoyed the 9 mile ride around the lake. Some of the group hiked at DuPont State Park. The only thing that could have been nicer were the bed and bath linens…they were long past their prime. Overall we had a great long weekend and we would highly recommend this lovely property.

Friends-cation weekend
We had an excellent time, minutes the torrential downpours and some minor issues. Details that do not need to be shared publicly as the owner was very communicable. Beautiful setting, I would suggest smaller groups, unless vacationing with family. Friends or not, couples sharing bathrooms is uncomfortable.

One-of-a-kind Property
The house and property are a quirky, fun and interesting place to stay! It's an older lakehouse that has obviously been added to over the years. To start, there are a few less than positive reviews but I think perhaps the reviewers are used to more modern properties that are easier to clean. Overall the house was clean and ready for renters. My super-picky crew was happy here. There were a few other comments about some of the rooms not having blinds -- that wasn't an issue for any of my family either. The owner -- Kershaw LeClerq -- was more than helpful with assisting us with the few issues we encountered. NOTE: if you message him through VRBO, part of the phone number may change to written numbers. One of the challenges with renting this house was figuring out the layout. So here goes: There are two bedrooms (1 with two full beds and 1 with a queen) on the top floor with a full bath in one of them. On the main floor, there are four bedrooms (3 with queen/king beds and 1 with twins). These four bedrooms share two jack-and-jill bathrooms. There is also the tiniest half bath on the main floor -- think airplane bath but smaller. The two big bedrooms are the ones without blinds. There is another bedroom in the basement and a bed in the main room -- so basically two rooms down there. These two sleeping spaces share two half baths -- one with toilet/sink and another with a shower/sink. There is plenty of other sleeping space in the house. With a blow-up bed or two, it could easily sleep 15 or so but not sure if that's allowed. There are several a/c zones so you can put your like-minded temperature people on floors together. We had the ones who like it hot on the top floor, the mid-temp people on the main floor and the snow breaths in the basement. The stars of the show are the awesome deck, the main rooms (living room and dining room) and the dock. All of these spaces were terrific for congregating and spending much-needed, post-covid time together as a family. The steps down to the dock are a little tricky so be careful how many adults beverages you have before you tackle those. On the fun side, we rented the pontoon boat and had an afternoon booze cruise every day!!! There were also plenty of water toys including paddleboards and kayaks that were available for our use. Overall, it's a terrific property for a big group getaway. Something super fun would be to have a murder mystery game going on because there are a TON of places to hide.

Wonderful stay
We had a wonderful 5 night stay at Kershaw’s place. We had 8 adults and 8 kids and the house blew away our expectations. Everything you could possibly need the house has. We did it all, used the pontoon boat(very affordable added bonus), fire pit, spike ball in the open grass area, brand new grill, etc. Kershaw was very responsive when we had questions. We couldn’t have scripted a better weekend for the wedding we attended at Camp Greystone. Make sure you’re well conditioned because you will get a great work out going up and down the stairs to the dock. I can’t recommend this place enough. I’ve read other reviews about bug issues at the house but we didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Thanks Kershaw!

So much potential
I stayed at this house for 7 nights through New Year’s Day. The good: Very spacious Plenty of beds Great lot around the property for sports and exercising Responsive owner. Great communication The view is beautiful The bad: Dirty. Unfortunately, the house was very dirty. The house has many rugs and they were all dirty with lots of dust under them. The very high in my opinion cleaning fee makes matters worse. When we arrived at the property, there were two ladies cleaning and that’s when it became evident that two people is not enough to clean such a big house in less than 6 hours since there had been a large party staying there before us. Roaches. This made it very difficult since we had kids that just didn’t want to sleep in certain rooms because roaches had been killed there. In total, we killed 10 Richard during the stay. 4 in the rooms on the third floor and 6 in the kitchen. I contacted the owner about the roaches problem and he said there’s a company that fumigates quarterly. Maybe this is something that needs to be done more often. 10 roaches is unacceptable and made the stay difficult. No blinds, anywhere. The house description does not state anywhere that the house does not have any blinds, not even in the bathroom upstairs. That makes it very uncomfortable to have kids go to that toilet since they can be seen from the distance. The rooms do not have blinds either, so if you want to sleep the morning just know that the sun will not let you. Some people may enjoy not having blinds but that should be included in the house description so that people are aware before booking. All in all, the house could be a dream vacation home but needs work. Dirt and roaches just didn’t do it for my family. If we could have left early we would have.

Fantastic COVID Family getaway
After so many months apart, our extended family was eager to come together for Christmas in 2020! This Lake Summit home was the perfect venue for us! The house is right on the lake and offers beautiful views of Lake Summit and surrounding mountains. It has beautiful grounds to explore and the house is within walking distance of a great park and a Dollar General with basic grocery / supply needs. A short 10 - 15 minute drive takes you into Hendersonville for more shopping options. The host is extremely responsive and addressed any questions we had very quickly. The house itself is very conducive to multiple families with large bedrooms and plenty of space for children and adults alike. The basement has a HUGE selection of toys which the children in our group aged 3 months to 8 years enjoyed very much. The kitchen has high end appliances and was well stocked with plates, cups, cutlery, coffee mugs, utensils, pots, pans, etc. Only suggested improvements would be new / sharper knives and gladware in the kitchen for leftovers accommodating large groups. Most rooms do not have window coverings, so when the sun is up you are up. While the views are amazing, window coverings would be an improvement to this home. We had a wonderful holiday celebration in the perfect Lake Summit home! We will be back to explore the area more and enjoy restaurants post COVID! Thanks for a great trip Kershaw!

Great old house. Classic!
The house is amazing with fabulous views. We loved the fireplace and lots of dry wood for making a fire. The patio is so pretty off the living room with great chairs and the very best of views. The area had a wicked storm the morning that we arrived but the crew came quickly and it was cleared up in a jiffy. Kitchen well stocked and spotlessly clean. Owner is very responsible and responsive. For an older mountain home, it’s great and would be great fun with a large group. Location is just what we wanted. We will come back.

Great setting, beautiful views, responsive owner
The property owner was responsive to our many questions and the issues we discovered during our stay. We traveled with five couples. The upstairs bathroom was not suitable for sharing by adult couples as it is not jack/jill. The four main floor bedrooms have two shared baths. Both master bedrooms on the main floor and the basement bedroom have no window coverings, so not ideal for privacy. We really enjoyed our stay, however! The large fireplace, awesome deck overlooking the lake, nice dining room table, and use of the pontoon boat (extra fee) made the trip. Thank you.

Perfect house for our family getaway
This house was spacious enough for our whole family to spread out including three large bedrooms with great views in addition to 3 smaller bedrooms and the basement. The kitchen was well stocked with pots/pans/knives etc.... so easy to prepare meals at home. The back patio was great for eating outside and enjoying the lake view. The dining room has a large table which fit all of us for when we ate inside or played games in the evening. It also has a large window over looking the lake which provided a nice view. We enjoyed the living room to watch football and sit by the fire. We also enjoyed using the canoe and paddle board for a quick time on the lake between hiking and shopping. The house is close to the highway so easy assess but is off a gravel road, tucked in, and very quiet and private. Because the house is older it doesn't have an open kitchen to the other living spaces but it does have a counter with two bar stools and a little seating area where people gathered while we cooked. Overall, the house was perfect for our family and our needs for a long weekend.

Perfect Thanksgiving Space
This is our second year staying in this spectacular house for Thanksgiving week. It overlooks the lake with views of fall colors and distant hills. The walls are covered with original art and the home is filled with lovely antiques. Honestly, it feels less like a “rental house” than it feels like we were visiting a grandparent’s beautiful home. The kitchen has been redone and worked great for our meal preparation. The large sectional that has been added to the den was cozy for our large extended family. The huge stone fireplace came in very handy on chilly days as did the generous piles of firewood. There are plenty of comfortable beds distributed through multiple bedrooms. The bathrooms are clean and well-appointed with plenty of clean towels. The two masters have cozy sitting areas. The location was perfect for getting to the DuPont area for cycling, Oskar Blues for brews, and to the Palmetto trail for hiking, as well as to Asheville and Hendersonville for shopping and sightseeing. Kershaw was immediately responsive to any issue we encountered and went above and beyond to address them. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to gather. Thanks for another lovely family gathering in this incredibly special home!

Wonderful retreat! Great house on a great property.
Three couples stayed 4 nights and a forth couple stayed 1 night. We loved the modern kitchen and public spaces, especially the dining room and living room. To us, the house was set up as two very nice two-bedroom suites on the main floor, an upper floor queen bedroom with ensuite bath with another bedroom across the hall. The lower level sleeping areas were not as comfortable as the other accommodations. Sleeping in the main floor suites was like sleeping in the middle of a forest, since two walls of the bedrooms were large windows. The views from the living room, dining room and the outside decks and veranda were absolutely beautiful. Very convenient to Flat Rock and Hendersonville. We saw plays at the Hendersonville Community Theater and at the Flat Rock Theater, and had some meals at the fine local restaurants. Three flat screens TVs (two very large) were perfect for watching ball games. We four couples get together for a reunion at a different venue every year, and we all agreed that this was one of our best times in the 15 years we have been getting together.

Beautiful location... large estate
This Lake Summit Estate is a large, stately home on a beautiful piece of property. Easy access to town and steps from the lake make it a great vacation home. A few negatives are the amount of steps to navigate the property, may not be ideal for older guests and small children. The strong moldy smell in the basement really made it unsleepable and the lack of window treatments in the bedrooms was a little unnerving. The plus side is this home could easily sleep four separate families with the connecting bedrooms and baths. The views were spectacular and the kitchen is well stocked. Hendersonville and Asheville are an easy drive. The owner was wonderful to work with and addressed a small plumbing issue in a timely manner. We would definitely return to this property.

Why they chose this property

We've been around the world and back. There is nowhere quite as nice as Western North Carolina.

What makes this property unique

This home provides a wonderful location for a family to get together. There are many places to have a meal together or just enjoy the lake view. If you want time on your own, there are plenty of places to hide out and read and let the day pass by.
