About this property

Sermoneta, Historic Stone Village House with Pool, in a Medieval Hill Town Close to Rome and Naples

Come to one of the most perfect medieval towns in Italy and enjoy living in a unique 12th century house, available for rent by the week or month. An unforgettable experience in the mild climate of this fairy-tale like town and area, only twenty minutes from great beaches, and a half hour train ride from Rome, awaits you.
Sermoneta is a rare and wonderfully preserved medieval hilltop town, with the ambiance of earlier epochs and a beauty for the ages. Domus Doull is a restored house in the oldest part of the town, near the dramatic "Caetani" castle, and with views over the Pontine Plain to the Mediterranean. Not far from the Via Appia, and countless other historic sites, and with feasible day trips by train to Rome and Naples, this is a great location for sightseeing. The 40 kilometres of beaches in the are make it a great location for summer holidays too.
The house includes a charmingly painted living room/dining room, a fully-equipped kitchen, and two romantic bedrooms, each with modern baths. Its shady garden is deliciously scented by Jasmine and the blossoms of ancient orange and lemon trees. Enjoy cooking Italian style in the garden's own pizza oven and outdoor grill, then settle in and enjoy your meal at the stone outdoor table. Best of all, enjoy sunning and bathing in a your own pool. In May and June the jasmine blossom is positively overwhelming.
The train station of Latina is only ten minutes by car from Sermoneta, and with the train journey to Rome only half an hour, daily sight-seeing visits to Rome are an attractive proposition. However, there is a wealth of tourist possibilities in the environs of Sermoneta; some of them are noted below. The ABBEY of VALVISCIOLO, a few kilometers north of SERMONETA, was established by Basilian monks in the VIIIth century and passed to the Knights Templar who reconstructed it in Gothic style using local stone. The Knights immortalized their ownership by sculpting their cross on the facade. In the XIIIth century, the Cistercians imposed their own style on the interior and in the decoration. Inside, frescoes by Nicola Circignani (1520-1600) and Emilio Savonanzi (1580-1660) can still be seen. Next to the church is the monastery with its cloisters. Not far from SERMONETA (6km) are the ruins of the ancient town of NINFA, the "Pompei of the Middle Ages", destroyed in 1381. The destruction of NINFA was the result of a feud between two branches of the Caetani family, the winners of which exacted this violent revenge. The town had contained within its walls ten churches, four monasteries, a municipal Palace, and a castle with a high tower. The ruins remained untouched for centuries; the crystal waters from the Lepino hills flowing through the lake and streams of the abandoned site. Today, all that remains of old NINFA are the ruins of the castle, the mills, and the churches, reflected in the waters of its lake. In 1920 Gelasio Caetani converted the site into a natural Oasis, a wonderful park of exotic and rare plants that thrive in this world-renowned micro-climate. These extraordinary gardens can be visited on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month from April to October, and on public holidays.
An extraordinary natural site is the NATIONAL PARK OF CIRCEO, host to the Monte Circeo, 20 km of superb sandy beaches, four lakes and a forest in its 8,500 hectares (18,700 acres). Recognised by UNESCO as a "World Heritage Site", the park contains 1,237 species of fauna and 250 species of bird, and wild boar, deer and foxes thrive in the forest. It also contains ruins of Emperor Domitian's Villa and Lucullo's Spring. The 1,700 foot Monte Circeo is believed to be the site of Circe and her Sirens, described in Homer's Iliad. Circe drugged Ulysses' 23 companions and turned them into swine; however, Ulysses avoided this fate with an antidote provided by Hermes, and persuaded Circe to fall in love with him, which helps explain her decision to return his companions. The Roman Emperors had an eye for beauty, and in addition to Emperor Domitian's Villa near Sabaudia, those of Nero at Anzio and Tiberius at Sperlonga are testament to the fact that vacations in this area have an excellent, and lengthy, pedigree!

Empfehlenswert

PERFECTION !
I don’t even know where to start. What an exquisite property ! Sermoneta is truly divine. This property is absolute perfection. Owner is amazing. Regrettably, we couldn’t stay forever. But if I could, I would ! The perfect location, locals are amazing and the house is ridiculously perfect. We were fortunate enough to stay when the Jasmine was in full bloom. OMG ! The air was drenched in its aroma. Intoxicating! The house was amazing beyond description. Highly recommend !!!

Absolutely wonderful
This truly is a unique property in a very special place. Sermoneta is a magical, pristine, medieval town, there really aren't many places like this is the world! While the town itself is wonderful, the house is even better and wait till you see your very own pool!! No fighting for pool side chairs, no needing to be up early to bag a prime poolside spot, in this house you have your own private garden complete with a beautiful blue pool and shady citrus trees under which you can spend a nice shady afternoon. For a real treat and an unforgettable holiday this house is the one to go for! All that and Rome is easily accessible for day trips.

An enchanting oasis in a charming village.
Excellent, attentive customer service. The property is very clean and well maintained, and the bathrooms are large and modern. The house is unique and absolutely charming; the garden and pool were beyond our expectations. The kitchen is well-equipped and very functional, and the bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. The location is excellent. It is a little hideaway after a day at the beach or in Rome. It was actually hard to get motivated to leave the property, however, as it is so quiet and beautiful. The village of Sermoneta is friendly and surprisingly tourist free. It has such an innocent feel, like it has been frozen in time. There are so many lovely restaurants to choose from, and prices are reasonable. I hope to return to Sermoneta and this lovely house.

Splendid home in a glorious and unique village!
The web site proposed a lovely location and property; the reality well met all of those advance expectations. The owners were most helpful for establishing the arrival processes and the local staff prepared the house very well for our arrival. The property was totally unique; medieval is correct. The house was furnished exceptionally and we could not fault anything that was made available to us. The beds were super comfortable; the living room quiet and relaxing; the bathrooms were great and the kitchen totally well equipped. Outside, the shaded patio area, complete with the hammock, was really nice to use morning, noon and night and the pool area was the icing on the cake with it's splendid views over the Pontine Plains out to the sea. Five star and elegant in every aspect! The village was beautiful; characterful and traditional. We were thrilled at the diverse choice of cafes and restaurants, as well as the peace and quiet of largely a carless society with splendid views from every direction. All of these were within a very easy walk from "Domus Doull". We loved returning from Rome's hustle and bustle to the peace and quiet of the village! Highly recommendable to anyone who wants to enjoy a comfortable "away from it all" stay in a truly unique property and location!

Enchanting house in medieval hilltop town
I, my husband and teenage children - age 13 and 17 - spent a week here to relax after a hectic five day stay in Rome and relax we did. Everything positive written in previous reviews is true - particularly that Susan and Adrian are very kind and informative hosts, the town is magically medieval and the house and pool are well-maintained and clean. I would recommend this property to friends and would go there again myself. Little things worth knowing that may not be apparent from the photos: - the house is quirky, quite dark inside and carefully and lovingly decorated but maybe not to everyone's taste. I found the main bedroom with its four poster bed a little claustrophobic, for example, and the mattress too soft and saggy to be comfortable. The stone steps to the cellar kitchen and the depth and positioning of the pool (which, though absolutely beautiful, is a plunge pool size - not really big enough for any serious swimming) mean that I would not recommend anyone to stay there with either very young children (under about 6/7) or elderly people with mobility difficulties - you would need to be on constant alert to see that they hadn't tripped/fallen/drowned etc. There are a fair number of mosquitoes in Sermoneta generally and in the house and garden particularly so do take with you plug-in anti-mosi devices to put in each of the rooms (6) on your arrival and that way, you can clear the house of them and sleep easy from day one. Also take sprays and buy citronella candles for the garden locally. Be aware too that, living in such close proximity to others, you can't make much noise in the garden in the evening or during the 2pm-4pm siesta time. Do visit the castle but read up on it first as tours are in Italian only.

Perfect by all means
Beside the friendly owners, The house is fully equipped, fashionably breathtaking. Located in Sermoneta (a very wonderful 12 century mountain village) the garden & the pool are viewing the Italian Countryside and nearby town of Latina, and Rome is only 40 minutes drive. I'll definitely choose it again and highly recommend it.

Fantastic Adventure
Spent one week in this very charming village. Susan and Adrian are thougtful hosts, and the house had everything one needs. They have taken the time to put together pages and pages of things to do in nearby villages, wineries, beaches, castles. Their descriptions of restaurants in the area was invaluable - not only in finding the restaurants, but knowing which ones to find. All in all -- a memorable week.

Perfect get-away!!
This is a perfect get-away for those that want a little bit of everything, whether relaxation by the pool, wine tasting at one of the local vineyards, exploration of the seaside and beautiful beaches to the west, and mountain range to the east, of Europe's most famous (I think) and Italy's longest road, Via Appia. 30 minutes comfortable train ride to Rome. Fantastic (and rather inexpensive) restaurants in the area. The apartment (entire bottom floor of the owner's house including exclusive use of the garden and the pool) is unique with its medieval charm yet very comfortably equipped for modern days requirements. Very well equipped kitchen (and fantastic seafood to buy in the near-by supermarket) and nice eating spaces both inside and outside. The two double rooms (on our request the owners had put the two twin beds together as a double bed), each with private baths (excellent jacuzzi in one of them), are situated in two separate parts of the house and made the house ideal to share for two couples. The village of Sermoneta is charming, the people are extremely friendly and seem surprisingly unfamiliar with foreign tourism (which we definitely think was a big plus!!). Italian spoken almost exclusively, but we managed to understand and make ourselves understood without problems. We will miss our morning excursions to the village lovely bakery and little mini markets for prosciutto, salami, mozzarella and other local goodies to be savored at a late breakfast in the garden. Lovely welcoming by the owners, whose company we thoroughly enjoyed over a (or two or three....) glasses of wine on their terrace on our last night. The privacy of the two entities (owner's and guest's areas) are very well preserved and not intrusive at all (well, we hope we weren't!!!). The fact that the pool wasn't top notch clean (still able to take a dip in it though) when we arrived and the internet did not function during the first days was due to local bureaucracies and inefficiencies that make Italy what it is (confusing, frustrating, but oh so lovely) and we must commend the owners on their ability to solve the problems as swiftly as they did. This, we know from numerous previous trips to Italy, is a feat in itself and rarely have we seen problems solved as quickly as they were by Susan and Adrian! The only low point - the excess luggage fee paid on our flight home due to all the nice local wines and food hiding in our suitcases....next time we come by car!!!
