Wonderful hosts and property

Angie and Randy were very helpful, providing both information on local places to visit and little items for our outings (cooler, chairs, etc.). More than that, they are genuinely kind and friendly individuals. The space we rented was lovely, providing us the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local animal sounds and enjoy beautiful views of wildlife and flora. Would stay again in a heartbeat!

Tropical Paradise

Staying at this property was such an amazing experience. Angela and Randy are the sweetest hosts I’ve ever encountered while staying at a property and they were so helpful whether it was giving us advice on what buses to take or helping us start the grill. Their friendliness right from the start made us feel safe and comfortable. This is truly the place to stay if you want to experience the sounds of the rainforest and immerse yourself in nature while feeling relaxed.

Hosts generous and very friendly. Suite spacious and beautifully built.

We loved the spaciousness of the suite and it's openness to the surrounding gardens. Beds very comfortable. Wood construction beautiful. Angela and Randy are great hosts. The property is further from the beach than we expected and the road into it is pretty rough. Overall, it was a comfortable and enjoyable stay for 10 days.

Birdlovers paradise

The house is spacious and clean. Angela and Randy are welcoming and helpful. We loved laying in our hammocks and watching all the bird activity. You can indeed hear howler monkeys in the mornings. This property is in between two national parks so it's a very central location for explorating the area. We loved being here!

Blissful retreat in open-air jungle home!

I’m still in awe of this incredible place for so many reasons. Firstly, Angela & Randy and their son are incredibly warm, gracious, thoughtful hosts who make their home, land, and garden into a gorgeous oasis. EVERYTHING here is gorgeous from the rare wood floor and glazed stump tables to the fruit platter presented on our first day to just the arrangement of gorgeous trees and tropical plants around their property. Staying here is such a joy and stress just kind of melts away when you are sitting in your open air (but enclosed where it matters) cabana with tropical birds flying right in front of you and the sounds of howler monkeys in trees while you pour over a coffee the traditional way “chorreado” then enjoy a coconut water from the coconuts Randy generously cuts for you. We spent so many slow mornings here melting away out stress and just reconnecting with the natural world and beauty. Dinners were the BEST here! We bought local fish, shrimp, & local meat in town (we would ride bikes there each day! So fun! And we would spot sloths and monkeys along the way!) and buy some local produce, ride back, and harvest some wild nutmeg from the tree across from Randy & Angela’s and then we would make the most fun and fresh dinners. The kitchen is just what you need; simple but has EVERYTHING—even a microplane! Perfect for someone who loves local ingredients. Some hot peppers and herbs are raised on the property and Randy & Angels are generous and willing to share and educate. They have so much knowledge about local trees, indigenous plants, and how to eat ALL parts of plants (roasting jackfruit seeds and eating the inside like macadamia for example!). They shared the fruits of their labors with us, bringing us a Yuca just dug from their garden which made THE best spiced fries I had ever had of any vegetable ever. Period. We loved the breadfruit they brought us from their tree which we cooked in flanks and topped with avocado and local hot sauce and cilantro with lime for breakfast! And did we mention the herbs, hot peppers, and coconuts gifted to us? Or the AMAZING soursop he brought for us to enjoy which was just the most incredible treat. Also, we slept here like we haven’t in a long time. The fresh air, the sounds of nature, the comfortable bed— heaven! We loved that this place has really good drinkable water, a fantastic shower with great pressure, is off the beaten path for nature lovers but is also close to a black sand beach & town. Perfect

everything you could hope for and more

Do not rent this place. We want it all to ourselves. This is the best b&b we ever stayed in. No windows. No doors. No air conditioning. No tv. No problem. All kinds of ceiling fans. 2 nice bedrooms and a huge open area with lounge chairs and a hammock. Fresh coconuts, bananas and a fruit plate anytime. Howler monkeys to wake you every morning. All this on a beautifully kept acre of land. Sometimes you meet people. Sometimes you meet friends. We met friends. Our hosts could not have been nicer or more obliging. Angela and Randy and their son Emelio were wonderful hosts. Living below us, we had ready access to anything we needed. They allowed us to ride with them to town. They allowed us to share dinner with them. We were there 4 nights. Instead of going out every night we spent 2 nights with them. The only negative would be the road to get there. The road from the highway to the house was very bumpy. Not gravel. Rocks. The bikes they loaned us were very good. Easy to get to town and around on. We're going back and we know where we are going to stay.

Spacious & comfortable

Angela & Randy we’re wonderful hosts, friendly & kind! Their place is absolutely beautiful. We saw more birds here than in the parks. The house/rental was very comfortable, lots of room, comfy beds, great shower, kitchen well equipped. Definitely recommend. Although you don’t absolutely need one, we enjoyed the freedom our car provided us.

VRBO logistics worked well. communication with host was excellent & ,timely and she was even more delightful in person when we stayed for two weeks. Our upstairs space was very clean. aesthetically pleasing and stocked with what we needed .We enjoyed many birds every morning and monkeys and beautiful trees and plantings and days at the various beaches in area . The only downside was activity around their beautiful property. which was sometimes noisy during day -

Well-kept and Welcoming Home near Playa Negra

This property is a gem! Meticulously cared for by Angela and Randy, the home and property is both a beautiful and safe spot to land after a day at the beach and in local Puerto Viejo. The garden is a sight of wonderment for birds, howler monkeys, iguanas, lizards, etc. a garden tour will showcase the local fruits of the Costa Rican landscape. The house is a perfect Caribbean style with open air concept (beautiful hardwood floors and furnishings), sliding doors in bedrooms for privacy and warmth, and a large bathroom. We loved the size of the main common room (much larger in-person than the pictures). Angela and Randy were on-site during our stay and had special surprises for us, including morning coconuts and water, educating us on the fauna and flora, great conversation, and pointing us to local spots and recommendations. The location of the property is within vicinity by a bike ride or car ride (or tuk-tuk) to Puerto Viejo. A few things here: 1) It’s 2km from the house to the main road. Then 2km to PV, 2) It’s a gravel road (currently), 3) There is a local small resort that boasts a nice beach area (including beachside drink/food service), and restaurant that serves good food, 4) The location is very private and free of unwanted noise. We gave it a 4 star rating because we, personally, would prefer to be closer to the main road. Having a car made this easier, but we would not, personally, use a bike on the road (dusty, potential bike tire punctures, etc.). Many others do use bikes (They provide them if you would like!). We will be visiting Randy and Angela again as they also offer a new addition to the downstairs with its own one bedroom space meant for longer stays and they are great people to get to know and be with. We also fell in love with their dogs (especially Cocoa)!

A delightful open-air experience

We had a wonderful time waking up to the sounds of the jungle, and bird watching while drinking coffee. One morning we spotted a sloth outside our veranda and he crawled around the house and even entered it. We watched him all day!! The hosts are a lovely couple and were always available to help us. We had some amazing BBQ’s with help from Randy. The property is beautiful and quiet. I would recommend renting a car or scooter to get around since it is about a 40 minute walk to town. With a car, it is a short drive to numerous national parks. We throughly enjoyed our stay.

Loved Zen rainforest retreat

We loved our stay here. Randy and Angela are the perfect hosts. It is easy to get a tuk tuk into town or you can ride the bikes that Randy and Angela provide. We did both. The howlers and wildlife are so cool. Every morning we awoke to the jungle coming alive. We loved our stay here. The only bad thing was that our stay was too short. Thank you Randy and Angela for an awesome stay. Pura Vida.

Great stay with Amazing Hosts

Located only 4 km outside Puerto Viejo, Zen Rainforest Retreat is a perfect way to visit the area. You can bike to town (using bikes included in your rental) in only 15 minutes, or take a leisurely walk in only 50 minutes (1/2 of that time along the lovely Playa Negra). The upstairs portion of the property is a perfect indoor-outdoor design with lovely views, great airflow, comfortable and varied options for lounging about (hammocks; chaise loungers; stools; and dining table chairs). The birdwatching is fabulous, and there are always howler monkeys in the area to remind you that you’re not far from the jungle proper. There is a perfectly serviceable kitchen, with a two burner gas cooktop, a full size fridge (with freezer), pots and pans and utensils for four. The very best part of the stay, though, are the amazing hosts. Randy and Angela are welcoming and go out of their way to ensure that you’re comfortable. They welcome you to use herbs and fruits from their lovely garden (nothing like Mojitos made with limes and mint picked fresh as you mix the drink!), and are always happy to answer questions about the area. We highly recommend this property, and hope to be back again in 2023.

Great stay

My dad and I stayed at this property for two nights. Don't forget to use Waze! We forgot and were using Google. We had a little bit of trouble finding where to turn, but Angela was very helpful and willing to give us directions. There was some construction work being done in the neighborhood that got quite loud in the morning, but that's out of immediate control and not a huge deal, just something to keep in mind if you are planning a visit in the next couple of weeks/months. The place was very clean and the open air space was really cool! We could feel the coolness of the rain and the warmth of the sun. We heard howler monkeys both nights and got to see some in the trees on the property! Richard gave us some bananas and a bread fruit from the property as well as a little botany lesson. When we went to leave our rental car was indicating some temperature problems and Richard was quick to provide us with a gallon of water in case we ran into trouble later on. Overall a great stay! We would come again:)

Couldn't ask for better hosts or a more beautiful location

From the moment we arrived in the area the hosts were amazing and help accommodate us checking in late and even took us to grab some last minute food in town before everything closed. They had an amazing fresh fruit platter made waiting for us from the fruit they grow on the property. From that moment forward the hosts we're so accessible for any needs we had to include fixing any bicycle issues we had, offering to drive us to town to go grocery shopping and just being all around amazing friendly people. They made us feel like family From day one and I would highly recommend this property to anybody who wants great hospitality and beautiful property for your stay. Got an amazing massage from the recommended person who was so friendly and did an amazing job. The town of Puerto Viejo was amazing to visit and bike through. We will definitely be back and can't imagine staying anywhere else other than this property.
