Très beau séjour
Confortable cottage, à deux pas de la gare, avec un feu de foyer de bois en prime. Très dispendieux mais séjour apprécié.

Ok though lacking charm
The description and photos of the cottage made it appear quite charming but it was actually very ordinary. Our stay was ok, it had what we needed. We made use of a park and ride and rode the bus into Edinburgh which was convenient.

Calm and cosy little cottage
We really enjoyed our stay at Chesnut Cottage ! Very cosy, warm, welcoming little house ! Thank you for welcoming us and our dog ! The Arniston Estate is lovely, very calm. A nice place for walks. Very dark at night, we had the chance to see plenty of stars when the sky was clear enough. The fireplace with everything needed and the bathtube were the cherry on top ! Easy to access from Edinburgh airport. The train station of Gorebridge is also a big plus. 25min by train and you're in the town center of Edinburgh ! Little detail: we struggled a bit with the electric plate. It takes too long to cook with it. It could be nice to have an induction plate instead :)

Cute warm and cosy with a working fireplace! Lovely walks in the area and driving distance to historical sites. The place was quite clean for a pet friendly stay but there were was a few pee stains from previous doggos.

Lovely, comfortable stay.
Had a thoroughly relaxing break, Henrietta extremely helpful. Our only fault if there is one is that the microwave and oven were dated, particularly the microwave, and the property would benefit from a smart tv. Comfortable beds, we all slept well and delicious eggs! Thank you.

Like stepping back in time but in comfort
We had a very nice first visit to this part of Scotland - to visit family who have downsized! We were really glad that we found and could afford such a nice place to stay. Everything was great - really comfortable, felt like the setting for a Catherine Cookson novel! The fire was hard to keep alight with just wood - I assume this is because in the old days this fire was used for coal? But there were some lovely blankets in the downstairs (twin) bedroom that we put to good use when the heating went off (we’re night owls!). Tiny TV but the kitchen was really well equipped - even had a hand whisk!

Nice cottage
We chose this cottage because of its authentic appearance and because it is located on a beautiful estate. In addition, it is also close to Edinburgh which we wanted to visit. You can do it by car or by train from Gorebridge. The cottage is small but nice and cosy. There is a even a nice fireplace. Furthermore, the facilities were complete for a week's stay for 4 people. The only pity was that the freezer was quite frozen over, so we could only use 1 drawer.

Lovely, comfortable cottage in the beautiful grounds of a country mansion, and less than 10 miles from Edinburgh city centre. Wonderful. Also came with two lovely homemade chocolate brownies!!

A comfy cottage in a wonderful location.
We had a brilliant week here at Chesnut cottage. The grounds are absolutely lovely with lots of walks and country parks located nearby. Edinburgh is just a short drive and there were lots of attractions there for my boys. The cottage itself is very comfortable and I loved cooking in the airy kitchen! Everthing we needed was available. Henrietta was extremely helpful and immediately helped me with any queries I had. Just a serene, comfortable stay.

A wonderful stay at Chestnut cottage
The cottage was a perfect base for visits to Edinburgh (train nearby in Gorebridge), Glasgow (only 1 hour drive), and other wonderful places like Rosslyn Chapel, the Pentland hills,… The cottage is really charming and cosy and provides all the comfort you need after a long day out. Only the shower is a bit basic, but it works well enough. Another plus is that the cottage is situated in the large domain of Arniston house. It is very quiet and you can take long walks on the estate. We certainly hope to go back sometime.

Stayed for work and family holiday
My family and I stayed in Chestnut cottage for a week in July. I was working in Edinburgh for the week and was able to hop on the train at Gorebridge station and be in the centre of the city within 25 mins. Coming back to Arniston after my working day was an absolute pleasure as I could walk the grounds and be totally relaxed almost immediately. My family (wife and three kids aged 6, 3 and 1) loved exploring the grounds spending time in the cottage itself during the day. The cottage is beautiful inside and out, very clean and so comfortable. We had everything we needed for our stay and felt really well looked after by our hosts. We will definitely be making a return to Chestnut Cottage when we can. Highly recommended.

Cozy, comfortable cottage in a peaceful country setting
What a lovely stay at Chestnut Cottage! We had more space than we needed and communication with our host, Henrietta, was quick and informative! We would love to visit again for another stay where we scheduled time to enjoy the beautiful grounds and a tour of the Arniston House. Highly recommend Chestnut Cottage (or any of the cottages at Arniston House)! Great host, great accommodations, beautiful country setting while close to mass transit and highways. Absolute perfect spot!

A brilliant cottage in a really lovely area
Our family of 4 was very happy at Chestnut Cottage. It had everything we needed for a comfortable self catering holiday. We enjoyed exploring the grounds around Arniston House, and the children in particular loved the walk down to the river. Would throughly recommend

Great cottage in a convenient and peaceful location.
The cottage is clean and well equipped, all the appliances and fixtures work well. We found the location worked well for the trips we wanted to make in and around Edinburgh while it also provided us with a peaceful retreat away from crowds in the cities and towns.

A tranquil haven in a busy world
A second visit to Arniston Estate and a third planned in Nov. The cottages offer well furnished, calming and cosy interiors to enjoy any time of the year. It is however, the location and the welcome that set it apart. The grounds are beautiful and offer a tranquil space to explore and escape from a busy world. Henrietta is a very welcoming host and most importantly for us they are genuinely dog friendly, not just saying it. There is plenty of space to let dogs exercise and play without annoyance to other guests and simple adherence to the private signs make it easy not to invade the owners space. Perfect location for Edinburgh city visits and to the coast.

Sauber, gut ausgestattet, Betten unbequem
Nett eingerichtete Wohnung, gut ausgestattete Küche, tolle Lage und Umgebung, nette Vermieterin. Die Betten im Obergeschoss sind leider durchgelegen, man spürt die Metallfedern der Matratze.

About the host

Hosted by Henrietta Dundas

Host profile image
My family, The Dundas family, have owned and lived at Arniston for 450 years. We very much enjoy welcoming visitors to the estate to experience the timeless beauty of our home. The current mansion house was built by William Adam in 1726 and many of our cottage visitors enjoy the guided tours which run from May to mid September. We are so fortunate to live in the country yet we have Edinburgh with all its attractions just a short train ride away.

Why they chose this property

The properties were built in the 18th century to house the foresters who worked on the estate in days gone by.

What makes this property unique

The stunning setting for our properties is always remarked on. Arniston is a designated designed landscape with many ancient broadleaf trees and wonderful woodlands to explore with pets. We have the best of both worlds as the buzz of our capital city, Edinburgh with all its attractions is a 25 minute train ride away.
