About this property

Comfort Cottage with Garden View Honeysuckle Cottage at Downe Cottages

Honeysuckle is a luxury one bedroom self catering holiday cottage.
It forms part of a two storey "L" shaped farm building built just after the Napoleonic Wars which we converted into four cottages. The conversion works were truly a labour of love and the cottages reflect that. The downstairs floor is a mixture of Chinese and African slates and provide a beautiful palette of browns and greys and reds. The pine stairs were made on site by local craftsman and includes a built in pine stair gate for young children at the top of the stairs. (Honeysuckle stairs are particularly lovely and reflect a cabinet makers skill.) Honeysuckle is spacious (57 sq. m.) and has a lovely beamed bedroom with French windows looking out to across the courtyard at Downe and past Jasmine Cottage to the Atlantic.
Downstairs there is a particularly spacious and light open plan living, dining and kitchen area.
The kitchen is fully equipped (dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, integrated oven, ceramic hob, washer / dryer, crockery, cutlery, pans and glassware etc),
The dining area has a reclaimed pine dining table and chairs.
The lounge area has two two seater sofas, coffee table, two sideboards, a log burner, 32" digital television with DVD player and a log burner.
Four large windows amen the downstairs living area particularly light and airy.
Upstairs there is a beamed bedroom with a 5' double bed and an ensuite shower room. The bedroom has two bedside tables and a chest of drawers plus a built in wardrobe.
Outside there is a seating area on Chinese and African slates with cast iron and wooden garden table and chairs which look out into an inner courtyard shared by the four cottages.
The cottage is situated in seven acres of grounds and gardens and there is covered parking for all cars in an old farm building.
Visitors are able to use the Gym and Spa facilities located on site.
Toweling robes are provided for adult visitors.
We have created the Cottages and have maintained them with a passion that has endured for more than twenty years.
The location is sensational: looking West over the Atlantic - next stop America - and North up to Lundy Island to the Welsh Coast beyond.
The Cottages, grouped around a large courtyard, reflect the men and women who created the original farm courtyard over the centuries.
Every cottage is a beautiful building and each has lovely features drawn from its history. During the conversion works we added to these features and know that some will be present in a hundred years time: the slate floors on the ground floor in every cottage, a mixture of Chinese and African slates, are fabulous; every staircase was built on site in pine by a craftsman working for us and are antiques of the future; many of the window cills are made of local slates and many have ancient oak lintels; the roofs of every cottage are reclaimed slate procured from reclamation yards around the county etc. etc.
Our objective is simple: we live at Downe and we wish every visitor to be delighted with their cottage.
We provide holiday accommodation that is:
Immaculately clean.
Warm whatever the weather.
Exceptionally spacious.
Well equipped so that each is truly " A Home from Home".
Beautiful to look at both internally and externally.
With well maintained, spacious grounds.
In addition there is a spacious and well equipped gym and spa of exceptional quality.
We welcome visitors and show them into their cottage; we show visitors around the Gym and Spa facilities; we are on hand to resolve any problem that might occur during the visit and we are there to say farewell at the end of the visit. We ensure that the cottage delivers everything that we promise.
You are treated as guests in our home.

We brought Downe twenty-seven years ago. It has been our family home ever since.
The outbuildings were derelict and the main farmhouse, which had been in the ownership of the same family for three generations, required substantial updating. It took us three years to complete the renovation and open for business.
Jeremy ended his career in industry as Group Director of Quality for a Footsie 100 company. He brought to Downe a focus on quality and a belief in the skills and abilities of those who work for us. The best evidence of the merit of his approach is the quality of the conversion works, carried out by self employed craftsmen with minimal supervision some twenty seven years ago. The cottages are still n exceptional repair.
Lynda, a mathematician by discipline, had been a housewife for twenty years and brought to Downe her passion for architecture and delight in a well run home which has defined the way in which the cottages have been created and maintained.
Our Cottage Guide reflects our frequent enjoyment of restaurants, pubs and facilities across Devon and Cornwall. There is so much to see, do and enjoy.
