About this property

"Flower of the Hills" Historic Craftsman Home with Garage. Private corner lot

Great romantic and family getaway! This comfortable, inviting, fully restored Craftsman home we call the “Flower of the Hills” features a wrap-around porch with rocking chairs, and a south facing deck perfect for Morning coffee or BBQing on the outdoor grill. Located in a truly private and natural setting in a quiet safe neighborhood. Garage & RV parking. This home is historic yet comfortable with modern conveniences. You can literally feel history in the home's original woodwork, gracefully proportioned rooms, period fixtures and 12 foot ceilings. The historic Black Hills, with Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorials nearby, is rich in natural beauty, cultural interest and fun things to do! Ski and Snowmobile in the winter months (just 5 miles away to Terry Peak), and gambling in Deadwood, just a few miles away.

Our kitchen is equipped with everything you need to make good meals. Dining Room seats 6+.

Do you need covered parking for motorcycle or snowmobiles? We have a large garage plus an outdoor space for RV parking. Travelling with a pet or pets? We are pet friendly; advance notice and approval required. Just write and tell us about your pet. All pet guests are required to follow House Rules, and there is a $75 per pet per stay;

From the main hall, French doors lead to the Master Bedroom. Next to the Master Bedroom Guest Room. Both are equipped with antique dressers, comfortable memory foam mattresses, pillows and quality linens to ensure a great nights sleep.

The house is on a corner lot literally carved out of the hillside, offering privacy and peace. Access to the open meadow behind the house lets you wander the hills where you may encounter wild turkeys, deer, jack rabbits and artifacts from the hill’s mining history. Sitting atop a hill overlooking the "Open Cut" in the historic town of Lead - known as the "City of Gold" because this is where the gold rush began in 1876 - the Flower of the Hills is located just 1 mile from Deadwood.

You can walk to 2 great neighborhood parks. Manuel Park has skateboarding, free tennis and basketball courts and a sledding hill. Take a stroll to Gold Run Park and follow the winding self-guided tour of interesting exhibits about gold mining until you reach the scenic visit at the top. You can see the famous Open Cut of the gold mine from our front porch (great view of fireworks on special occasions!) and visit the free Homestake Visitor Center less than 1 mile away in the downtown historic district of Lead.

Just short drives away are national monuments, Spearfish Canyon with waterfalls and forests and scenic drives. Close by are biking and hiking trails, especially the breathtaking 110 mile Mickelson Trail, 2 ski areas with snowmobile trails, and countless other opportunities for year round outdoor recreation, adventure or relaxation.

Lead is home to "Big Science" experiments on matter (neutrinos). Visit Sanford Underground Research Facility where scientists conduct experiments in the former gold mine in a search for dark matter; and to learn what happens to stars when they die.

“The Flower of the Hills” truly captures the rich history of the area, the laid back character of the Black Hills. Come explore the area, while enjoying the comfort and character of this historic home. There's so much to do, you'll want to stay awhile!

Great place to stay near Deadwood

We had an excellent time staying at this house. The kitchen was very well equipped, both in terms of appliances and other tools, and in terms of food items. Beds were comfortable and outside seating was nice. The owner was very nice and let us keep our camper there a few extra hours after check out. We would stay there again.

Definitely Coming Back!!

This home was absolutely charming, and likely one of the nicest in the area. The back patio, surrounded by a hillside of blooming flowers, was a peaceful retreat. The street is quiet, perfect for a relaxing stay. The kitchen was well-appointed with everything you could possibly need.

A Welcomed Getaway

We couldn't have been more thrilled with our accommodations with this property. The house was extremely clean and beautifully decorated. We spent most evenings on the front porch enjoying a glass of wine after a long day of exploring the area. The beds were super super comfy, which made the experience all the more better. Our stay here was just the ticket we needed to decompress.

Weekend Getaway

The property was so beautiful. The porch is to die for and early morning coffee/ late night drinks sitting on it was amazing. The home is located perfectly so you can do everything you want to do. Also, we asked for an hour later check-out as our plane arrived later and they were super accommodating. 10/10 recommend.

Charming home in a quiet friendly neighborhood.

This 100+ year old home was fun to stay in and feel at home - old charm with modern conveniences. It was fun to see ‘the sites’ but come to a quiet place to relax and rest. Great little walking trails/streets in 3 directions. It was nice to have a garage for our vehicle although we felt completely safe and secure. We hope to come back next fall.

Nice Location for Access to Black Hills Sites

We enjoyed our stay in this nice Craftsman home. It was furnished with beautiful aniques. Very clean. Well equipped. We didn't spend much time outside as it was over 100, which made inside a touch warm at night, but fans helped. Really appreciated the motion lights at night that kept tripping to the restroom. Communication with Annaliese was excellent.

Comfort is Key

100% all around comfortable! This place is a gem, deco/atmosphere, bed, shower, and kitchen. More importantly the feeling of security when garaging our truck and trailer while out riding our motorcycle. Lead-Deadwood are beautiful and quaint little towns. And, our hosts were quick in response. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, was sometimes too comfy to leave out to ride. :)

Cozy and Clean

From the booking to arriving our experience was great. The home was clean, well equipped, and had an amazing shower. Quiet, pleasant, outside relaxation front or back porch. Seeing deer from back patio was wonderful. Front hedges should be trimmed and kept trim as walking up stairs and narrow walkway to front door was a bit hazardous. Owners and property host were amazing. Home and garage are true to the name and are on a steep hill. All 4 of us would stay here again if in the area.

Lead or Bust

I love Craftsman style homes and this one didn’t disappoint. Location was perfect for our stay. Our Papillon pup enjoyed her walks in the neighborhood. Quiet neighborhood. Aside from 1 bathroom because we all love 2, it was a lovely stay. Adding we were aware that it was only 1 bathroom. Thank you for adding a new memory to our many trips to the Black Hills.

Perfect for us

We enjoyed our stay. House was clean and very ready for us. We really liked eating our breakfast and drinking coffee on the porch every morning! The queen air mattress was helpful. The kitchen was everything we needed. Would have liked the option of pulling darker curtains in the living and dining rooms but not a big deal. Appreciated the effective communication and affordability.

So close to town

Husband and I stayed for a week. Our dog loved the private cul de sac that was in the back of the house. Nicely decorated and comfortable. Kitchen well equiped. Super easy to get to Lead. Could walk it but its about 1/2 mile. Hostess was very responsive to a tv issue we had. Would definitelty stay there again. We trailered our ATV and there was plenty of room to park Suburban and trailer. Nice bonus to have a garage to keep our Side by Side in. Great trip! Page and Beth

We have hosted over 200 satisfied guests to date between our various properties in Colorado, South Dakota and Missouri.

Anneliesa works in Environmental Consulting as a Project Manager for AECOM. Her professional background includes working 3 years as General Manager for a renovated historic hotel in Maryland. That experience provided her with a deep understanding of hospitality that she applies to hosting guests in short term vacation rentals.

"Caring for the structures of the past is a worthy pursuit" says Architect Jim Smith of SmithsArchitects. He has a keen eye for historic preservation, and personally oversees all aspects of building and renovation. He loves to restore properties to their former beauty by working with original woodwork, detailing and period fixtures. As a result, you can literally FEEL HISTORY in the renovated spaces that is respectful to original builders and craftsman, and materials.

Together Anneliesa and Jim are building a portfolio of properties in historic settings that offer you a truly authentic experience of a period home, furnished with a view toward harmony, simplicity and modern comforts. Come, be our guest – and stay awhile!

Why they chose this property

Anneliesa and Jim visited the area after watching the HBO series Deadwood. They fell in love with the area, its rich history and historic homes. The "Flower of the Hills", built in 1905 on the site of the Flower of the Hills patented lode mining claim, was a compelling renovation. In spite of several remodels done by former owners during its 110+ year life, the Craftsman home retained many original features that simply needed to be excavated and brought to light again. They did exactly that during a 6 month renovation full of exciting discoveries!
Now, the restored Flower of the Hills once again sits in shining beauty on the top of the hill near downtown historic Lead.

What makes this property unique

The Flower of the Hills offers you the experience of living in a turn of the last century home that is furnished with a comfortable simplicity, in a historic setting in South Dakota's beautiful Black Hills. Be our guest, and stay awhile!!
