Location
Barbados is a truly phenomenal holiday destination, and geologically unique; a coral island, initially pushed from the sea as two separate land masses by volcanic activity many years ago. Over time these two land masses merged together creating the isle we now know as Barbados. Barbados lies on the boundary of the Caribbean and South American continental plates making it unlike any other Caribbean Island. Within the core of the island, made up mainly of coral sediment, numerous caves and underground lakes can be found. Arguably the most famous of these is Harrison’s Cave; a network of caves, waterfalls, pools and fantastic stalagmites and stalactites.
Emerald Beach happens to be located in the vibrant West Coast, where you can find natural beauty, safe swimming spots and plenty of activities all in one. It is also the best spot to enjoy long walks on the beach at sunset. Gibbes beach is considered one of the most peaceful and unpopulated of the island, giving you a well deserve relaxed atmosphere. You can also head 7 km south of the coast to the buzzing Sandy Lane beach, the favourite swimming spot for the rich and famous!
Inland Barbados is delightful to explore, enchantingly quiet and rural, there are endless fields of sugar cane dotted with old plantation houses. Barbados has a rich and interesting history and has preserved and restored many of its historic buildings – you can visit a plantation house for a trip back in time, see the towering lighthouses that once led ships to safety, or explore the historic towns that are an important part of the island’s past and present.
Whilst on Barbados, a taste of the island’s rum is a must! The isle has been producing rum for over 350 years, and it is recognised internationally for its quality. Many tours and taste sessions are available at the local distilleries.
Kids
Best Suited For: All Ages
Barbados is the ideal destination to bring the family to, especially if you have some little explorers who are keen to see a new world.
Of course, children of all ages will be pleased by the crystal-clear waters - and adults can rest assured that the swim spots are safe. The best places to swim with young children include Mullins Bay, Accra Beach and Batts Rock. Many of these spots are small coves monitored by lifeguards. They also have amenities such as change rooms, bathrooms, food kiosks and playgrounds.
In the nearby Mullins Beach, Spy's Watersports offers several water-related activities, including the exclusive and extreme FlyBoarding! For the little ones, other activities such paddle boarding or swimming with the turtles can also be enjoyed there.
For inland activities, look no further than Barbados Wildlife Reserve. Within Farley Hill National Park, the Reserve specialises in preserving the natural habitat and re-habilitating wildlife. The kids will love learning about animal preservation and will be able to see the renowned Green Monkeys fool around in trees. The Reserve also offers guests the use of dining facilities, so no need to bring a packed lunch!
