About this property

In the village, between the sea and the mountains - Madeira Surf Camp II

Madeira Surf Camp is a guesthouse in the heart of the village and historic area of Porto da Cruz, Madeira. We completely renovated the property in 2020 in order to accommodate those who visit us in comfort and safety, in a centenary house.

Here you can have your privacy and, if you want, hang out with us and the other guests.

The rehabilitation of the terrace has made this space the ex-libris of the property. With a sunbathing solarium, a shower to refresh yourself, and a barbecue for outdoor meals. This in an exotic setting in the northeast of Madeira Island, with 360º views over the sea and mountains surrounding the village.

On the lower floor, there is a fully equipped kitchen and living room in a single room where you can have your meals or relax on the sofa. There is also a complete bathroom on this floor, and the kitchen and living room are shared with all guests.

Madeira Surf Camp was founded by local surfers André Rodrigues and Hélder Vieira who wanted to offer to other surfers, the local waves, nature, gastronomy and culture of the island.

Rooms
Two single-beds room. Oriented to the East, you can enjoy the sea view that the room has. Completely renovated in 2020, you'll find the comfort you're looking for your rest. The room has storage for your belongings and bathroom with shower.

Area
The village of Porto da Cruz is located on the northern coast of Madeira Island, between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches of Porto da Cruz are especially suitable for beginner surfers as they are the only ones with volcanic black sand with surfable waves.

Porto da Cruz still preserves its traditions, with a relaxed lifestyle and a very hospitable local culture. In the area, there are several restaurants where you can taste the regional gastronomy, such as fresh fish, seafood and other traditional Madeiran dishes, as well as wines and spirits.

The village does not have a very busy nightlife like other surfing destinations in Portugal. However, if you are looking for a closer contact with nature and a relaxed lifestyle, then this is your surf camp.

Madeira Surf Camp is surrounded by banana plantations, vineyards, and it is only 15 km from the International Airport and 30 km from the centre of Funchal. The beach and all the necessary services are just a few meters from the Surf Camp.

Being located in a rural area, there are several outdoor activities that you can do, such as canyoning, track running, mountain biking, paragliding, fishing, karting, among others.

Surf
The village is surrounded by volcanic black sandy beaches, ideal for those who want to take surfing lessons and learn to surf in Madeira Island. In Madeira Island there are almost no crowds, in fact not many local surfers. The north coast has the highest consistency and exposure to the North Atlantic swells and the widest range of waves and various levels of surfing.

The island offers a vast array of waves just minutes away, from long and soft waves suitable for beginners to extreme surfing conditions for "big wave surfers". For beginner surfers, the most popular spots in Porto da Cruz are all black sand:

Alagoa - A small bay, just two minutes walk from the surf field and the surf school. Ideal for learning and surfing lessons as it is protected from the big waves.

Maiata - It is about ten minutes away from the surf camp. It is the largest and most beautiful sandy beach in Madeira, it can withstand waves of up to 2 metres.

Contact us to make a special price for accommodation + surf lessons one week pack.

Getting around
Once in Madeira, leave the airport on the motorway towards Santana, just follow the signs to Porto da Cruz. Madeira Surf Camp is located right in the middle of the village of Porto da Cruz.

When you reach the exit to Porto da Cruz, take the right (2nd exit) at the roundabout. Go directly to the centre of Porto da Cruz village, on the regional road for about 3 minutes. Arriving at the village, take the 2nd exit where you will find the blue house.

You can also reach Porto da Cruz using public transport, the bus company is called SAM and leaves from Avenida do Mar in Funchal or the airport terminal. The bus numbers are 53, 78 and 208.

The best option to reach the property is the transfer. Ask us to book one with our local partners. It is cheaper than the taxis you find at the airport. If you rent a car, any navigation application will easily find the address.

Lovely stay!

The house really exceeded our expectation, lovely rooms and great indoor and outdoor space. Communication with Hélder was very good and fast. We also had a great surf class with Cecilio.

Top notch

Clean and tidy, all the mod cons, right by the beach, friendly people to talk surfing or anything else or just peace and quiet while you rest up before more surfing.

Idyllic and social place - a little remote for non-surfers without rental car :)

I stayed for a few days in the surf camp to use the spot for hiking trips. I can highly recommend Vereda do Lorano (starting point is in Porta da Cruz, right where the Surf Camp is :) However, a few other hikes are difficult to reach without a rental car. The town and the coast is very scenic, calm and beautiful. Just consider that it takes a bit to reach from Funchal :) I had a great day surfing out with the guys - thanks for renting me a wet suit. The community place really enables connection with the other people staying and you can easily prepare lunch or dinner - especially with stuff from the friendly market nearby.

Very nice stay

We were two friends staying there for one week. We didn't do any surf lesson, but it seems that it is well organized Otherwise the shared rooms are really nice, especially the rooftop with a very nice view on the ocean and mountains. The arean is very calm, and you have everything nearby walking distance in case you don't have a car. The room was very clean, but I just have a few recommendations about some missing furnitures. Would be nice to have in the bedroom a chair, a full body mirror, a bigger bin, a hairdryer, this kind of equipment was definitely missing. Also the pillows were not really good. This is just to improve but the stay was great, we appreciated a lot. We couldn't meet the owner of the place but they were very reactive on the phone every time we had questions Thank you for the stay !

Best place to relax

We enjoyed our time at the surf camp very much. Both the accommodation and the surf lessons were wonderful. Hélder is an excellent host, surf teacher and all-rounder. :)

Great facilities and excellent surf camp

The surf camp is very modern and comfortable. It’s perfect if you want to have a bit of privacy but also meet other interesting people. The rooftop area with the bbq and loungers was my favorite for chilling. Hélder, the owner, runs a really good surf school and was always friendly and easy going to deal with. The surf instructor Cecilio was very good and put effort into his classes. Porto da cruz is a beautiful place to spend some time and the surf camp is a perfect place to base yourself

Just Great!

The place was really comfortable and Porto da Cruz surprised us with the chill ambient and good location for moving around the island. We had an amazing time enjoying the view from the terrace. Would definitely recommend this place. Thanks Helder and Andre for having us.

Cozy but not special

The room was clean and cozy but small especially the bathroom. The common area was nice. In the guesthouse it was very calm and there was no host around to arrange activities ! There is not much going on in the area except one or 2 restaurants and surfing ! So make sure you can move easily if you want to have some action. Overall, our experience was ok but nothing special.
