Fabulous location but not without its flaws
The building is beautiful from the outside and in a perfect location - the immediate area is very relaxed and calm, but in a 5 minute walk you’re in the centre of the city. Check-in was easy and we were able to drop our bags at the apartment early and leave them there on our last day. First impressions of the apartment were great - bright, airy, bedrooms were all good sizes - but we soon started finding its flaws. The main issue was the damp - it was isolated to one room, but after a few days all the belongings of those staying in the room started smelling of mould. The door of the dishwasher didn’t close properly so that leaked every time it was turned on. One room had a floor to ceiling internal window but no curtain - we had to improvise with a few blankets. The kitchen would benefit from a deep clean and an update. We had exactly the same issue with the city tax as those below. I do not have Revolut and refused to sign up. We eventually agreed to settle using PayPal, but I still felt very uncomfortable sending cash to a personal bank account when there had been no mention in the listing.

Location close to everything!
Beautiful old Lisbon building with tiled facade and stone walls. I’ve never stayed in a building so old! The beds were comfortable and it came with a great blow dryer so your hair will look good in selfies. Wi-Fi worked well in the living room. The host so kindly allowed us to drop our luggage off prior to official check in. Understanding the age of the building and lack of forced air heat, we did have to abandon one bedroom due to mold smell. We were able to adjust by putting sisters together in the same room. We, as with previous renters, we’re asked to pay money outside of the VRBO listing. This is not something I do. I encourage the manager/owners to add necessary taxes to the listing. This ask created a lot of communication for me to attend to when I just wanted to enjoy the city.

Perfectly situated
Was there with family and after a slight glitch getting in because they changed the passcode, all was good. Alexandre was readily accessible by phone for any issues. The kitchen is a little too modern so it took a bit to figure out appliances and there is a dearth of electric outlets, but other than that it was comfy. The neighborhood is the best thing. Next to Alfama and all the restaurants, a lovely park with a great view and the Tuesday and Saturday flea market, it has all you need and is nice and quiet at night without tourists. It’s about a 20-30 minute walk to the center of Lisbon, so we rarely relied on public transport or Tik Tuks or Ubers, but those are quite cheap when you just don’t feel like climbing the hill.

This place needs some serious TLC
First of all, let me preface this review by stating that the issues we raised with the host were rectified immediately. But this place is in need of a serious deep clean and love. To be completely honest, we’ve never stayed in such a gross place. To begin: be aware that you will have to pay some city tax through an app that I’ve never heard of before, and the directions on how to transfer the money to the host are super vague. The place itself was disgusting. And I don’t use terms like that often or feel like we have super unrealistic or high standards. The kitchen was so gross and in need of a deep clean (every appliance was filthy, drawers were disgusting, water pitcher was broken [host did replace], freezer hadn’t been defrosted in god knows how long). That was just the beginning. There is black mold all over the window sills and on the floors as well as in both bathrooms around the fixtures. The entire bottom level smells of mold and musty. The shower curtain in the lower bathroom smelled so bad and had so much black mold on it that we had to ask the host to replace it while we were out for the day (which they did). My spouses’ asthma flared the entire time we were there. There is no air conditioning in this place, and so in order to keep somewhat cool, we had to leave the windows open while we were there. In doing so, there were so many mosquitos that we got eaten alive. There were three fans there, but one was broken. The host did replace that one for us. However, there are 4 bedrooms. One of the beds in the lower level has a bed that feels like concrete. One of the doors didn’t lock (host got that fixed while we were there). It rained and came into the living room through the door (which we assume is part of the reason it’s moldy and musty). The bathrooms stink (when someone is showering downstairs the upstairs one stinks and visa-versa). There are clearly plumbing issues. There are exposed wires in the ceiling in the kitchen dining area. There was broken light fixtures, windows and chairs. There were brackets hanging on the walls that at one time (maybe?) held shelving. The lights along the stairs had over half of them in disrepair. Overall, this place needs a complete deep clean, fresh set of paint, and some serious TLC. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere.

Great Potential but Missed the Mark
The property had a lot of potential but unfortunately did not meet our expectations. First of all, the check-in process was pretty frustrating. The main issue was payment of the tourist tax. The hosts wanted payment via the Revoult app before providing check-in info. The app is not readily accessible to most Americans. I tried signing up but it basically forced me to create a bank account and I felt very uncomfortable with the amount of info required (social security number, picture of face, passport, etc.) and after going through these steps, I still could not get it to work. Finally, the host relented and let me pay in cash... which begs the question why I couldn't simply do this in the 1st place. I deleted my Revolute account and they said they'd store the info for 6 years before deleting... so I'm glad to have all my information out there in case of a data breach. One of the reasons I booked the accommodation was its walking proximity to the train station. Although google maps says 7 minutes walk, it is essentially straight up a massive hill and with all of our luggage and we needed to get a taxi anyways, negating one of the key benefits I thought we were getting when booking. The actual property matches the pictures, but everything was a little more dated. We only used the 3 king bedrooms and we're glad we didn't need the 4th, as it smelled strongly of mildew. The beds were not comfortable and extremely squeaky, making sleep difficult. The wifi only worked in the living room and kitchen--not a single bar in any of the bedrooms--which was an issue because only 2 of the 6 of us had international data turned on. Finally, the day of arrival they informed us of a sewage issue and they dispatched a technician. The issue was clearly in the downstairs basement, as it smelt horrible during our 3 night stay. We called the bathroom the "stinkitorium" and nobody could use it because of the smell, which forced 6 of us to share 1 bathroom/ shower. Overall, we are glad we did not spend much time in the property, as we were out exploring Lisbon most of the time. On a positive note, the location is excellent (right by the twice a week flea market) and nearby to many cafes and restaurants. Overall, there are some major kinks to be worked out at this accommodation before we would ever consider staying there again.
