Polperro House was originally two separate houses, now joined into a Grade II Listed home with a south facing garden enjoying its own micro-climate and breathtaking views of the historic harbour and out to sea.

Visitors to Polperro have to leave their cars in the municipal car-park a mile up the hill before entering the village on foot. Polperro House however comes with TWO private parking spaces behind The Ship Inn, a hundred meters down the hill from the house. Simply offload your luggage and shopping at the house, park up and drift into your relaxing holiday.

With the sun arcing above the garden from early morning until she sets over the western promontory you will find breakfasts drifting leisurely into lunch and morning coffee being replaced by a light lunchtime rosé, which before you know it may give way to a G&T at sundowners. Weren’t you supposed to be rushing off somewhere? Oh well…….. Instead, the slap of wavelets on the hulls of crabbing boats in the harbour and the banter of the returning crew caught your ear.

The Patio is 33 feet long and 24 feet wide. Outside there’s an eight-seater, glass-topped rattan table. You can sit on the swinging seat or on the benches by the patio wall to take in the ambiance and eavesdrop on the gentle goings-on of harbour life below. Sheltered by Talland Hill behind and bathed in the warm airflow of the Gulf Stream, Polperro enjoys its own micro-climate making the winters very mild. The Nasturtiums may still be in flower on Christmas day and you may be watering them in your shirtsleeves!

The private patio is fully secure, but in order not to spoil the view the walls are low. Please keep an eye on toddlers who might adventure onto the tops of the walls and fall to the neighbours garden below. We would encourage you to bring a Pet Travel Kennel as we do, to use indoors at night as we prefer our canine friends remain downstairs in the kitchen and lower sitting room helping to keep the bedrooms clean and odour free for future guests; and hope that you'll agree. A useful site to help plan your dog’s holiday and beach access is (https://www.cornwall-beaches.co.uk/dog-friendly) with Talland Bay Beach a few minutes’ drive away being dog friendly all year.

We haven’t used a wide angle lens or any panoramic trickery to make the interiors look bigger. The many photographs and YouTube video should allow you to get a good idea of the true size of our traditionally kept historic property. The photos from the windows and garden out to the Harbour show the beauty of the house, its location, scenery and atmosphere.

The house has its own unique history. Records show the owner of Polperro House at the beginning of the 1900’s was the first person in the country to own an Automobile. Herbert E. Butler (1861-1931) a well known artist who trained at the Royal Academy lived in Polperro House and painted the iconic view many times. A black and white photo of him and his wife Sophia in the entrance porch of the house hangs in the kitchen. Many artists came to Polperro House as students and Butler’s descendants still live next door.

Gary and Heather Priestley bought the house in 2012 after falling in love with her at first sight and have nurtured and cared for her tenderly since then. Jake da Motta and Gillie Lightfoot took ownership in 2021 being smitten themselves by Polperro House and her charms in online pin-up photos, without ever setting foot in her.

We are delighted to be able to offer the house out for rentals so that you can make your own special holiday memories in this much loved home.

Polperro House also boasts the advantage of being only five minutes drive to Looe and its sandy beach and the Fowey inlet, (pronounced Foy) being ten minutes in the opposite direction. Polperro’s own small beach exposed at low tide outside the harbour wall boasts Willy Wilcox’s Cave and a tidal bathing pool which will delight adults and kids alike. The Coastal Path offers a string of TEN beaches and coves within five miles of Polperro.

At the time of writing there were over twenty venues to eat an drink in Polperro which is still a working fishing village, so you are more likely to find a fresh Crab Roll than a mass produced burger. There are many events throughout the year, one being the Polperro Festival in mid June. A week of great free music and off-beat activities including the election of a new Mayor!

Polperro is ideally situated for daytrips to some world-class West Country destinations and a host of fascinating towns and villages. But whether you’ve spent your day in Sennen Cove at Lands End, perusing the Tate Modern in Saint Ives, having a Michelin Star lunch in Port Isaac, brushing up your Eco-credentials at The Eden Project, scaring the kids with tales of the Beast of Bodmin or catching a great break at Widemouth Bay on your board; it’s all within a couple of hours of Polperro House; and you can still make it home for sundowners on the terrace.

The master bedroom has a large Victorian style en-suite bathroom with cast iron Roll Top bath and MASSIVE SHOWER. All the other bedrooms are VERY LARGE as well, another also having a Roll Top bath and separate shower cubicle. The Double bedroom on the mid level has an en-suite with shower, toilet and sink. The bedroom with two single beds has a large Victorian fitted basin and shares a separate bathroom and shower with the other kids’ room with bunk beds.

The downstairs lounge has a solid oak floor, and a ceiling of original, gnarled, knotted pine; cosy with deep leather sofas and wood burner. Internal glazed panes and shutters will keep even the gustiest winter weather at bay. Leading off this ground floor room is a loo, electric shower and wash basin to rinse off the briny or mud from your excursions on the rocky coast.

The oak floored, fitted hardwood kitchen has a large gas range, eye-level oven and grill, fridge freezer, microwave and all the appliances and equipment you could need to conjure up wonderful meals for a group of ten people and feed them at the solid oak kitchen table.

With three large double bedrooms each with its own bathroom and two further singles sharing a bathroom, two sitting rooms, Superfast BT Broadband, BT TV and Sport, board games, DVD’s and CD’s, we believe Polperro House offers a spacious, well equipped and cherished home-from-home for groups of friends and families alike. We hope you enjoy her as much as we do.

2nd time here, just as good
This was our second holiday here after previously staying in 2017. Lovely house, fantastic position & views, and Gary could not be easier to liaise with. Only wish we could live there!

Amazing property with wonderful view
This unique building with all the authentic details is wonderful. We enjoyed the cosy communal kitchen and the well sized super comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms. The view from the windows and the garden is unbelievable. The road towards the house is short but quite steep, so keep that in mind.

Beautiful views
The cottage is in a stunning location and has great views of the harbour from the terrace and main bedrooms. There are plenty of bathrooms, and space for a large group to spread out. Unfortunately there were a number of minor maintenance issues which let the place down, and be aware that the arrival is stressful if you have a large car. Overall we had a great time

Polperro Perfection
Incredible view, great location. We had a range of ages from five to fifty and everyone loved the house. The little ones could go down the hill to the bakery and shops. The older folks enjoyed a glass of wine (or two) on the terrace. Wonderful accommodations with lovely decor. We’ll be back!

A lovely stay
Flew in to Exeter airport and then drove the short 90 mins to Polperro. Stayed with a group of friends who were all very impressed with the property, especially with the idyllic view of the harbour. I had a small question regarding the facilities and the owner was very helpful, answering the telephone immediately and then checking later to confirm everything was ok. While the weather was a little changeable (January) it was always mild and we would love to return in the summer months.

Wonderful
This house is absolutely lovely. The view from the terrace is spectacular and is a short walk to the heart of Polperro. The rooms are charming and comfortable and the kitchen is fully equipped for cooking. We had two adults in their 80's who were initially nervous about the winding stairs but ended up having no problem with them. We spent much of our time hiking the coastal trail or just site seeing around Polperro. We has an excellent meal at The Blue Peter Inn but did most of our cooking ourselves with dinners on the terrace. A fantastic place.

A great find
We were very lucky to see a brilliant firework display on the beach all viewed from the house patio with a glass of wine in hand shared with good friends. The house is a great find, full of history which has been kept by the owners. Well equipped, warm, cosy and welcoming. The beach takes about 5 minutes to gently stroll to which just happens to pass a few good Ale houses. Great having the parking spaces so close in the village. The locals are all very relaxed and enjoy a talk and banter. We are planning to return in the SumMer.

Beautiful polperro
The house has lovely views and our group of 8 had plenty of room to spread out. The house is on a very steep hill but it’s not too far to reach all Polperro has to offer. I found the hill ok but my 80 year old uncle did struggle so just something to bear in mind. Private parking for 2 cars at the Ship Inn was so helpful as the main car park is a long walk away. I would definitely come back again.

Idyllic place + idyllic house = excellent time
We're just so sorry to leave this delightful house situated in the heart of Polperro's idyllic fishing village. Having arrived no problem, dropped our bags at the door using the little pull in, then continuing to park in one of the two dedicated parking bays, we were blown away by the ever changing views of the harbour from it's secluded courtyard. Inside, the homely kitchen led you to a very cosy lounge with a wood burning stove. Upstairs there were bedrooms, bathrooms, bedrooms and more bathrooms. Oh, and another lounge. Just lovely and the kids can't wait to return, hopefully with swimsuits next time.

A very magical find. A place not to be missed
Thought it was a cold part of the year, we were blessed with glorious weather-t shirts in the garden in February!!!! The house was very cosy and the lounge with the wood burning stove was so toasty we had to have the door open to let the heat out. The village is a lovely quaint old English place, a place you must put on your bucket list. The bedrooms were massive, and the ensuites were just right. The children loved living in a real old building. We have booked to stay again. Note:- there are a lot of new eating places opening in Polperro with chefs who have been trained by Rick Stein, Gordon Ramsey etc. A pizzeria and kebab shop is also opening in a few weeks next to the Ship Inn- my sons ideal holiday

The best place to be in Polperro with friends
View = amazing, house = perfect. The weather was magnificent. First sunshine, then storm, then sunshine again. So more or less a great place for you to be in Polperro. Because the apartment offers several basic elements which you could not find anywhere on one spot:- view, house, surroundings, ability to observe the activities in the port, Navy vessels practicing in the bay in front of Polperro, kind local people, nice pubs, etc. Walking up the short hill to the house was not a problem for our ageing parents. The directions to the property were great along with the instructions on how to operate the equipment in there which was new and alien to us proved very useful. It was very well equipped three ovens, two fridges one which we used to cool the liquids, washing rooms abound, plenty of places to sit and contemplate. A very restful holiday was had by all of us with great friends. Thank you for letting us stay at your place.

I want to buy the place and live out my dreams
We were looking for a lovely cottage that would our families with children comfortably whether the weather was good or bad and we certainly found it! The cottage itself is stunning - lots of space, top quality furniture, beautifully decorated and really good facilities (even bath toys for the kids and games for the adults!). It all felt very luxurious. Not to mention those fantastic thick towels which were a great idea as we did not have to find the extra space for in our car The patio at the front was even better than the photos with views down on to Polperro harbour and out to sea with a great swing seat to enjoy the view with a glass of wine! The children spent many hours exploring and playing in the garden. It was also great to have parking in the village - although those narrow old streets are a bit precarious to navigate in a car!! We could let our young children wander off down into the Harbour knowing there would be no problem with the tide and playing Pooh sticks in the stream. We were blessed with fantastic weather for this time of year though we had come away expecting bad weather but as we found out, the climate in Cornwall is very Temperate and as Gary said we would be wearing T shirts if the sun cam out. We had two days exploring on Lantic Beach - one of the best I've seen any where. We also enjoyed just pottering around the village, sitting on the harbour wall watching the world go by and exploring the local rock pools. Fowey is worth a day out if you like the traditional boats though I personally was glad to be be back in the house enjoying its warm ambiance and that lovely stove. I felt sad each day ended but pleased we had mde the correct choice. Gary and Heather responded really quickly to the few issues we were concerned about before our arrival which they put us at ease, so all in all it was a perfect get away winters holiday! We would very much recommend Polperro House-the actual place is better than the photos. We are planning to return in the summer work schedule permitting

Character house in unique location
The house is full of character with its cosy living room and family sized kitchen on the ground floor and a further sitting room on the first floor providing a haven of peace for those who come with small children as we did. The house is well equipped, and quirkily decorated, but shows its age, which was not at all an issue for us. The main bedrooms command a near perfect view of the quaint harbour, channel and headlands straight out to the open sea. The view is shared from the large paved terrace on the sea side of the house equipped with seating, large table and barbecue equipment. These must be a delight to use on summer evenings (our stay was in late October.) In all, this is a beautiful property for those wishing to enjoy a house with old world charm in the heart of this historic village.

Perfect for a family holiday!
Spacious, comfortable, well equipped home for celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary with our family. Great to have 5 bathrooms with the 5 bedrooms- and the showers were always hot too! Loved the harbour views from the sunny garden! Polperro House is well situated for all the friendly pubs, restaurants and galleries and shops Polperro has to offer.. Our holiday here has given us all many happy memories.

Lovely place for get-away.
This is a lovely part of Cornwall and this property makes a great base. Looe to the east and Fowey to the west. A short walk along the coastal path in an easterly direction takes you to Talland Bay, excellent for rock pooling, a nice little cafe and toilets there to. Back at the house there is a great little garden for sitting with a coffee or something stronger and watching the comings and goings down in the harbour, but it could do with a little care and attention. The kitchen has pretty much everything you could want for your general cooking needs. The downstairs lounge perhaps could do with a small heater just to take the chill off in an evening if you don't want the trouble of setting the wood burner, or trying to find firewood. Plenty of hot water for showers. The parking spaces behind the Ship Inn are a little walk from the property but considering that we are in a tiny Cornish fishing village. We had a great family holiday and staying in this house helped towards making it. Overall the property is excellent although it looks a little tired in places. Thank you.

Home from Home
We have just returned from a wonderful week in Cornwall. Polperro House was perfect. It is well presented and comfortable and had everything we needed, including the travel cot for our granddaughter. The large kitchen table was ideal for sharing meals and a few alcoholic beverages. Although the weather wasn't the heatwave of earlier in the summer we were able to have BBQs and enjoy the fish that the menfolk caught. We enjoyed walking the cliff paths to Polruan, Looe and Talland Bay and the jazz in the Buccaneer. A very good holiday.

A beautiful house in a stunning location
The house was beautiful, kept in great condition and exactly as described in the advert, full of character and fully equipped for our family of 10 to use all week. The rooms are all very spacious, we had plenty of room for everyone to relax. Gary and Heather responded very quickly to any query I had before arriving at the house and are extremely welcoming. As a family we would all recommend this house to friends. Polperro is a stunning fishing village, full of history, traditional pubs, shops and cafes. We didn't feel the need to go to a large supermarket as the 'polperro news' which is only a minutes walk from the house provided everything we needed and we wanted to support the local businesses. We ate and drank in the Blue Peter Inn and the Three Pilchards, who both offer delicious food and great beers. The boat trip to Looe was great fun, especially for the children. The Chapel Pool is a hidden gem which everyone needs to see to appreciate, and even with the freezing sea water it was well worth the dip! We can't wait to go back to Polperro, it has captured our hearts completely!

Lovely home, lovely location and helpful hosts
Polperro house has a lovely view of the harbour. It had all the essentials including a fast broadband connection, a shop at the bottom of the road, and parking for 2 cars (in private car park at bottom of the road). We had Tesco deliver our shopping to the main polperro car park without any issues. Access to the house is a bit daunting on arrival as the one way road is steep and narrow in places however it shouldn’t put you off as the views and specification of the house are well worth it. Highly recommended.

Great house, lovely village
House is everything it says it is <3 And the village is adorable. Great place for a group of friends or a family. Owners provide you with lots of information about the house and the area. Only little thing is that (as honestly mentioned in the ad) the livingroom is a bit on the small side for 10, so if long lounge or game nights with the whole group are what you want this might not be the best pick. But if two/three are early sleepers you will be fine :p And there is a second living room space up stairs so you can split up if wanted. The house sleeps 10 very comfortably. Lots of bathrooms and a great outdoor space. And a LOT of games, books, video's provided!

Fabulous location
We were really lucky to stay in Polperro house during the heatwave.Nothing could have been nicer than waking to such a beautiful view every morning, from the boats bobbing in the harbour, seagulls wheeling and the comings and goings of morning life as the streets awoke. Evenings enjoying the moonlight reflected across the water. So peaceful and relaxing. The house was filled with character and provided a really comfortable base to explore this lovely area. Polperro proved really welcoming, locals happy to pass the time, great live music, pub quizzes and fishermen choirs in the harbour. A terrific break.

Great 4 night stay
I want to start by saying what a lovely house and location, the views are amazing! Everyone in our party was catered for and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the house has a very welcoming old charm and is the perfect escape from city life. The only con being is that the doorways weren’t designed for anyone 5’10 plus as I experienced on a number of occasions. Overall a fantastic stay and would very likely return with the family for more Cornish adventures!

About the host

Host profile image
We were lucky enough to become the owners of Polperro House in March 2021 having met her, courted her and wedded her over the internet as Mr Johnson saw fit to prevent us returning to England on leave from Zambia, Central Africa where we live at Sugarbush Farm in Lusaka. We have three growing boys the oldest of whom will be starting Uni in the UK in September 2022 and the others will follow so it was time to start looking for a base in the UK which we could use part of the time and allow others to enjoy when we are not there. We have twenty years of practice in letting out beautiful holiday homes in Zanzibar (Kwacha House) the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia (Jake and Gillie's Retreat) and in Lamu, Kenya

Why they chose this property

It has everything you need to be by the sea, in a picture-postcard perfect village within two hours of everything that Cornwall has to offer.

What makes this property unique

Plenty of space, a successful and well loved house run brilliantly by the previous owners Gary and Heather Priestley for the last nine years. The benefit of being able to park in the village is enormous and makes getting out on excursions a doddle. The Coastal Path runs past the door and will take you to ten beaches in a five mile radius.
