We stayed at Casa Borboleta around Christmas and New Years Eve. With the big and sheltered terrace the house is perfect to enjoy the mild weather outside. We felt at home in midst of all the other Houses. Its an old house with its own characteristics what made our stay even more enjoyable. The bathroom is perfectly new disigned. The living room has the nice character of a wintergarden. The garden itself is flourishing all the time.We were lucky to taste Madeira Bananas. The place on Madeira was perfect. When we could observe thick clouds anywhere around we had sunshine. We would return as soon as possible.
We had a wonderful stay at this place. Especially the porch and garden are great to relax after a long hike or in the morning.
The hosts Sarah and Ciarán are very nice and always there if you have a question or need a good tip what to see, when the weather has you cancelling your plans (Thanks again! :) ).
There are some small farms around with the typical sounds and animals which we found enjoyable. The house itself is very clean, however since it's in the subtropics your are occasionally welcomed by a lizard or insect that made its way inside, but as long as you don't leave any food out, you'll be fine.
There is essential infrastructure around: small supermarket, little coffee/poncha place and last but not least a Hawai themed cocktail bar called Pukiki that is great for the spontaneous drink in the evening without the need of driving (many do drive there as its possibly the best cocktail bar on the island if not Portugal).
So overall, if you're not looking for a luxurious resort but a quiet place to wind down from work and to explore this little macronesian island gem, it's perfect. :)
We really enjoyed our stay in this house. It is will equipped and decorated. We found more confort that we could expect and felt like home. The garden and terrace are really beautiful and we really appreciated the view. The location is also great, close to shops, cocktail bar and access to the main roads. Sarah and Ciaran were also really nice and caring, we really appreciated discussing with them. We would definitely recommand the place to our friends.
Super accommodation to discover the west of Madeira.
Very clean and functional accommodation, everything is there.
In addition, the accommodation offers a particularly pleasant garden with a superb view, ideal for a change of scenery.
Sarah and Ciaran are very pleasant hosts.
We would recommend this accommodation in all respects.
We really enjoyed our 10 day stay with Sarah and Ciaran, we met them on arrival and they were very friendly, courteous and helpful. The house had a clean and comfortable interior. The living room has lots of books and board games. The kitchen is large and includes everything we needed including a dishwasher, large fridge with a freezer, stove, oven and microwave. There is a large bathroom with a washing machine and additionally a second toilet outside of the main bathroom. Despite the house being older it was never too warm inside, even on hot days.
The view is even better than in the photos online and visible from most rooms of the house. Outside the property has space for at least 2 cars and parking on the street should also be possible. The garden felt very private and includes lots of sunbeds and a grill. The deck has a roof so that we could still sit outside when it rained or when the sun was more intense.
The location was great for us as many hikes were only a relatively short drive away. The house is in a quiet neighborhood, we never had trouble sleeping and always felt safe.
There are a bar, snack bar and small supermarket in walking distance nearby, which had pretty much everything we needed, and in some cases a better selection than the large Pingo Doce supermarket in town. More shops including Pingo Doce and restaurants are a 5 minute drive away in Calheta. The beach is the same distance and parking further up the hill (about a 5 minute walk down to the beach) is free.
We hope to return soon!
On recommande !
This house has a fantastic location. Near the beach and nice supermarket. We enjoyed the view and garden a lot, mostly bbqing and spending our time outside. The house is a traditional Madeira style, and very homey.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah and Ciaran
We are the family caretakers of Casa Borboleta. We have lived on the Island for almost 20 years. We are passionate about Madeira. Our daughter was born here 9 years ago and our passion has doubled. We love walking, swimming and enjoying the fabulous local dishes and drinks. And we love to share our knowledge of Madeira. We enjoy meeting people and are alwasy on hand to help if you need us. Come see us soon :)
Why they chose this property
Casa Borboleta was recently bought by our friends who fell in love with the Island as did we - 18 years ago. The property is a traditional build with lots of character, a lovely garden space with terrace and beautiful sea views. You are among the locals and a short drive from the hub of Calheta and of course you have us to help if you need :)
What makes this property unique
It is difficult to experience the older traditions of Madeira in the larger and bigger towns. The area is rural and very typical of Madeira and the property has unique feathers including two peak roofs in two of the double bedrooms. An old stone oven is still in tack although not in use, and no doubt a modern oven is far more apealing. You can only image how the families of the past cooked their meals. There is an element of history about this property that adds to the allure.
