LOCAL AREA:
Southern Brittany is ideally placed for so many beautiful places to visit and things to do all within an hour of of the Gite.
Below is a selection!
JOSSELIN - A very popular town, with its perfectly preserved medieval chateau, still lived in by the Duke & Duchess of Rohan. This wonderful Chateau has just been rated (2017) as the 3rd best chateau in the whole of France! It's a must see along with the Chateau's Dolls Museum which is open to visitors from April to October, there are tours in English daily during the summer.

LE BOIS D'AMOUR (Lovers' Wood) in Josselin is literally a "park in a town". It has been created to promote nature and the environment. There is an open air theatre where music events are held during the summer months. An amphitheatre stages open air films and concerts during the summer.

Bastille Day 14th July, a very important date in history for the French which sets the storming of the Bastille in 1789. It has become a major public holiday. with numerous celebrations going on throughout France, Josselin is no exception and holds a Medieval Festival every 2 years, (re-enactment of medieval times) in the cobbled streets with its half timbered medieval houses, this will be happening again in 2020, it is amazing to see, where the whole town dresses up in period costume, with flame throwers, artistes, stalls, restaurants, bars, fireworks and more, a really good weekend not to be missed!

LA GACILLY (34 mins) - A very pretty town, the home of Yves Rocher (cosmetics & perfumes) where the family still live. There are fields of wild flowers around the town which are used to make perfumes in their factory, they also have a shop, spa hotel, and a vegetarian restaurant, very rare in France!

Outdoor Photo Festival (the largest in France), absolutely spectacular, focusing specifically on the environment, is held from June to end of September each year all around the town. Created in 2004 by Jacques Rocher, hundreds of large format photos are installed in the open air throughout the quaint cobbled streets. The aim of the festival is to make the public think about the future of the planet. An absolute must see! Day Boat Hire, rent a boat in this pretty town, relax and meander through the river Aff which leads to the Nantes/Brest canal, whilst spotting a kingfisher and other wildlife by the banks!

VANNES (42 mins) - a beautiful walled city, full of art and history and is without doubt one of Brittany's most attractive sights and a must visit on any trip to the Gulf of Morbihan. Wander around the well preserved medieval streets, don't miss the spectacular and large morning market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, before taking lunch from the numerous restaurants overlooking the harbour side, try the famous seafood which includes oysters and mussels, then take a walk along the harbour with the hundreds of boats to look at whilst working your lunch off!

PLOERMEL (12 mins) - Although a town with lots of shops, on the outskirts Lac au Duc is a large stunning lake measuring 5.5km, with a sandy beach, lots to do here, kyaks, canoes, pedalos, water skiing, fishing, bar/restaurant, plenty of parking, fun for all the family! Adjacent to the lake is Lac au Duc Golf Club, this is a little gem in Brittany, a very popular 9 hole golf course. Take the hortensia trail alongside with 5,500 hortensias! or take all or part of the walk/cycle route around the lake, but beware this is long!

Unpleasant

Not clear in the advert this is a former stables / barn, the makeover is very poor quality. There were an incredible amount of flies at the property, landing on every surface and making it unpleasant. The walls were damp / bubbled and unsafe for our two year old. The ceilings were uneven / low, the stairs were exceptionally steep and with only one stair guard. The property was dirty throughout with superficial cleaning only. The ~20 year old vacuum cleaner appeared to be the root cause of this. Dangerous electrical connections and sharp metallic edges were present throughout the property also; unsuitable for two year olds or adults. The property was exceedingly hot with no air conditioning, some fans were provided but opening the windows only led to insects / rain / smell ingress. A minor positive was the welcome basket of local goods. The property manager was unwilling to accept our complaints, nor were Vrbo with their 'book with confidence' guarantee which seems to amount to nothing but marketing hot air. They will likely write a careful reply disparaging us as having unreasonable expectations, etc. Overall a terrible holiday we believe was advertised/listed misleadingly resulting in a memorable experience (negative) with this property and Vrbo. We won't be using them again clearly, proceed at your own risk.

Perfect stay!

This gite is in a fantastic position to visit Josselin and all the surrounding area. We had a fabulous week - great weather and so very much felt it was ‘a home from home’. The peace in the evening was blissful and we spent many a night just relaxing and enjoying the local food and wine. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything you needed and the beds really comfortable - heaven! Josselin chateau is definitely worth a visit and it’s a lovely 40 minute amble from the gite into town. Dont forget to visit the Saturday market and enjoy moules-frites! Some kind of electric fly catcher would be useful!
