Valleseco, with its green nature, is located in the centre-north of the island, 7 kms from Teror and 28 kms from the capital Las Palmas. It is formed by two main ravines, Barranco de la Virgen and Barranco de Madrelagua, and a central, drier valley, from which the municipality gets its paradoxical name. 80% of the territory of Valleseco is a protected natural area. At an altitude of 1000m. above sea level, Valleseco is often enveloped in a "sea of clouds", which gives it its characteristic intense green landscape.
Leaving behind the most populated part of the municipality, a few kilometres from the town centre, is the Cortijo de Calderetas, which can be reached on foot from the road along a track that is only a few metres long. It is a beautiful landscape formed by a large volcanic caldera surrounded by chestnut, elm and pine trees, inside which sits a traditional Canarian house from the end of the 19th century with a gabled roof. Surrounding it is an extensive esplanade where the typical products of the area are grown: potatoes, cereals and apples, and on one of its sides the Calderetas washing place with its typical tiles for washing clothes. Its historical origin dates back to the conquest of the island, as do other farmhouses that we come across, if we continue our route: Cueva Corcho, Crespo, Almaderos, Mesas de Galaz. To delight the eye, huge expanses of pine and chestnut trees have been reforested where there were only wastelands or pastures. Sheep and lambs can sometimes be seen perched on the slopes, from two of these livestock that still live in the area. In the distance, if the sea of clouds allows us to see splendid panoramic views of the capital.
Near Montañón Negro, the landscape becomes rugged and arid, revealing its recent volcanic origin. With a height of 1,500 metres, it rises up at the southern limit of the municipality, its lava flows running along the Barranquillo del Maipés ravine, a tributary of the later Barranco de la Virgen ravine. Due to its unique geological characteristics, it has been declared a Natural Monument and is now part of the Network of Protected Natural Spaces of the Canary Islands.
Valleseco is very well communicated with the roads of the island and with the capital. It is advisable to hire a car to facilitate transport and visits to places of interest.
