About this property

A True Montana Lodging Experience!

Enjoy log cabin comfort and rustic elegance in the privacy of your own mountain meadow (50 acres near Helena, Montana, surrounded by Nat'l Forest).

Thank you for your interest in Black Mountain Lodge! We appreciate the opportunity to share this historical property. We strive to provide a unique lodging experience while honoring the stewardship and preservation of the land and structures. We are certain the magic of this historic space will create long lasting memories.

This historic property was originally a lucrative mining claim during the Gold Rush. The tailings from multiple mining claims can be found in the nearby hills. You might get lucky yourself but don't be tricked by the glittering Fool's Gold that laces the stream! In the early 1900s it became Primrose Farm, a dairy providing fresh milk to nearby Helena. Our family acquired the property in 1941 and we are now heading into our fourth generation as stewards of this remarkable piece of Montana.

During the day take in the panoramic view from the large screened porch. Or hike miles of spectacular trails right from the front door. Wildlife abounds in our mountain meadow and you will spot animals large and small--moose, deer, elk, coyotes, even bear--from both the porch and trail.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The spacious Main Lodge with its sleeping porch and four private sleeping cabins accommodate up to 12 guests. A gurgling mountain stream winds its way between the Lodge and cabins lulling you to sleep at night. Please note we no longer offer options for events. Our 12 guest capacity is firm. If you are looking to expand accommodations for up to 3 people, a fully equipped Chalet can be added to your reservation. The Chalet is a short walking or driving distance from the Lodge and has its own parking and WIFI. This addition can be added for a minimum of one night or be available for your entire stay. Contact your host for more details and availability.

The Main Lodge sleeping porch has two twin beds. The four sleeping cabins include a king size bed, a four person bunk house, a lower cabin with a full size bed and futon and a creek side cabin with a full bed and twin bed. A full bathroom is located in the Main Lodge and a multi-user Bath House serves the sleeping cabins.

The Lodge kitchen is provisioned with staples such as basic spices, coffee, filters, tea and cleaning supplies. There is a gas stove, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, refrigerator, coffee maker and outdoor gas grill for your use.

The Lodge does have WIFI. However, Cell phone reception is patchy in the mountain valley. There are a couple spots in the meadow where calls can be made although texts can be sent and received more consistently. Ask Ayrne and she can point out those hot spots!

Love all around the place

We rented this property for a family trip out west (from Florida). It’s hard to look on a map and pick a spot to stay not knowing anything about the area. We found this and thought it looked like a fun place to unwind and relax. This place was magical! You could feel the history and love all around. Each cabin welcomed you in and told a story. The beds were comfortable and there were plenty Of blankets for our cold rainy nights. The creek offers a natural sound machine, right outside your window. The kitchen was fully stocked with dishes, spices, and everything you need. It was so cozy! The creek runs behind the main lodge and the views are amazing. There were games, books, binoculars, wash tub for some creek laundry (we actually did that for the experience) and outdoor games. We had the best 4 nights as a family there. The kids at first didn’t know what to think bc it was so old- but the last night there- they were sad to leave. The sofa and chairs were comfortable and the description says no wifi- but they did have it!! I felt like I was in a family’s creek house and could feel the love of everyone who has had a part in making this property magic! Thank you for having us!!

Mountain Paradise

OK, this place is utterly amazing. I had no idea such a wonderful place existed so close to Helena. Truly Magical! I was missing the horses but that will be for next time. If you want a place to get off the grid with family and friends but still be close to town, this is the place. The main lodge is like walking through a museum of Montana History. The Kitchen was amazing, stocked with wonderful stoneware to cook with, and everything else you would need. The creek running out the back door of the kitchen was our dog's favorite place to sit. The hiking was fun and I took many photos of the unique area that will hang on my walls very soon. Spent eight wonderful days of being connected with family and friends. The perfect place to re-connect and de-connect from our busy world. Truly a place you will never forget and will always want to come back too.

Wedding week getaway

We booked this property as a way to spend time with friends during the days around our wedding. We live locally but wanted a get away to balance the stress of the final days and have more opportunities to hang out. We were not disappointed. This place is AMAZING!!! We had space to ourselves and lots of room for guests to stay and hang out. The weather cooperated and we also enjoyed a beautiful location for our pre-wedding photos. There are options for families with small children in addition to couples that want more privacy. We didn't explore much of the hiking trails but would love to return to check them out. It was also a bit chilly to give the cold tub a go. Everything was clean and ready for us to have a great gathering of friends and family for multiple days. Our families remarked they would love to return and stay here again. We 100% recommend staying here! Also, Ayrne was a perfect host with impeccable communication. You won't have cell service on the property and this is one of the countless highlights of staying there.
