About this property

Magnificent Maison de Maître & Cottage Sleeping 14 with Pool & Games Room

A stone built character house with adjacent cottage set around a courtyard within 5 acres of secluded grounds.
The property is 500m to the east of Montcaret village centre, a picturesque village with an 11th Century Romanesque church set amongst the remains of a Gallo- Roman villa. The village is served with a first class boulangerie/patisserie and a tabac, which are within walking distance of the house. There is a new Carrefour supermarket at 1.9 miles distance.
The House and the Cottage are set around a gravel courtyard and adjacent to each other, but not interconnecting.
The House sleeps 10 in 5 bedrooms and 'The Cottage' sleeps 4 in two bedrooms.
The House has a large kitchen with all appliances including a large double oven range cooker and an American fridge freezer. There is a separate dining room, and a large sitting room with a stone fireplace and grand piano for the musically inclined. There are separate washing /laundry facilities in a utility room.
The Cottage has its own large kitchen/dining area, and a sitting room at first floor level with a Juliet balcony overlooking the courtyard.
Guests have the use of the former Chai (wine making room ) as a games room, for ping pong, table football and snooker/pool. Within the house there is a further games room with a Wii with various games, attached to a large flat screen TV.
Both the House and Cottage have their own flat screen TVs in the living rooms with both UK and French satellite channels.
Both houses are served with free WiFi.
Outside there is seating for dining and relaxing in the courtyard, and to the rear of the house a large terrace for eating out, and a covered terrace seating area.
To the rear of the house is the pool area which comprises a Roman ended pool (10m by 5m) with an extensive paved seating area and an abri (shaded area). There is a generous provision of sunbeds around the pool.
This area is adjacent to the property's own field from which one can access footpaths up the hillside and amongst the vines.
There is shaded parking for cars under the huge walnut tree next to the house.
This area of the Dordogne is steeped in history and provides a huge variety of cultural, sporting and recreational activities. This can range from visiting the world renowned Unesco Heritage Village of St Emilion close by, or seeing the Son et Lumiere of the Bataille de Castillon in near by Castillon, to, for the more active, canoeing down the Dordogne, horse riding, cycling, trekking etc.
This is serious wine country and of course there are endless opportunities to visit local chateaux for tastings and to sample the delights of the regional cuisine in the many local restaurants. For those who prefer to cook, there are fine local food markets to visit, that at Ste Foy La Grande being particularly popular (Saturday morning) and voted one of the best in France.
For those that want a beach, this can be found just 12km to the north at Lac de Gurson, a large lake with restaurant facilities, pedalos and other facilities.
Further afield is the beautiful city of Bordeaux, and the picturesque towns of Bergerac, Perigueux, and Sarlat. The Atlantic Coast with well known resorts such as Arcachon and Lacanau are beyond Bordeaux but accessible.

A Gem of a property. 5 Stars!
A fantastic place to stay, especially for a large family. The outside photos don't do it justice. It has a lovely outside area, including a large lawn, great for kicking a ball around or a game of rounders. The best part with having kids, it's all secure. The large iron gates help you relax a little bit more. Walking (15 minutes) down to the bakery each morning (closed Wednesdays) was fun. Everyone's favourite place to go was the lake. Only 15 min drive. Soft sandy beach, safe swimming with lifeguards and marked swimming areas. Great facilities, including food and drinks. The owners Gill & Hugh were very good in answer all our questions and providing a lot of helpful information. Liz is the local caretaker who meets you on your arrival. She was also very nice and helpful. We would highly recommend staying here. We would like to stay again.

Great stay!
Lovely old property with facilities to keep all age groups happy. Plenty of books, DVDs and games. Table tennis and snooker tables got plenty of use! Nice quiet location but only a short walk to the boulangerie in the morning. Would happily return.

Perfect location for our 3-generation summer family get together
Our family party of 11 spanned 3 generations aged between 6 and 71. Our last combined holiday of this sort, 2 years ago, and also in France, had been so successful that I worried how this one could compete. I need not have done. We couldn't have asked for a better location for us all - the house, garden and pool were all just as we would have wished. The house has a lovely flow to it, with generous outside eating areas - we chose the courtyard area for a sunny breakfast, and poolside for lunch and supper ( aided by plentiful umbrellas as we embraced the 38 degree heat!) The house is large enough that escape from the general melee is possible, but equally encouraging to family interaction; we particularly enjoyed the proximity of the pool area to the house, and the calm airy cool of the sitting room to retreat from the fiercest of the sun. We hoped to have a catered meal one evening, and Gill and Hugh very kindly organised this for us with a chef from the restaurant in the village, carefully navigating our various dietary requirements; Stefan and his team were delightful and our meal was simple but delicious - even catering for our Vegan member; highly recommended! We enjoyed our morning walks to the village boulangerie (Wednesday aside, when the baker's day off necessitates a short car drive to one slightly further afield). The local pain au raisin is not to be missed! Outings to the Roman Villa in Montcaret village (a short walk) and kayaking on the Dordogne satisfied our limited appetite for adventure beyond the confines of the estate; we had come to relax and enjoy each other's company and this was perfect. A midnight swim in a cloudless, moonless, star filled sky on our last evening was a fitting end to a wonderful week. Highly recommend!

Beautiful home with lovely amenities
We enjoyed a fantastic week at Les Oiseaux with our family (ranging from 5-70years old). The house was well equipped and we all enjoyed the pool and games rooms. Everything had been thought of and Liz was on hand for local knowledge and tips. The owners were helpful and responsive to emails. Would highly recommend this property and would love to return.

Family stay July 2018
12 family members ranging in age from 6 - 74. One week stay in July 2019. The house, grounds, pool and BBQ area are wonderful - all the facilities you could wish for. The in village support from Liz was superb and nothing was too much trouble. We would love to return next year.

Fantastic property
This is a wonderful property and our large family (Ranging from 12 to 80 years old) were all catered for very comfortably indeed. We couldn't have asked for anything more. The vendors were a pleasure to deal with and answered all our questions promptly. It provided Grandparents, Parents and Grandchildren with a rare opportunity to spend time together in lovely private surroundings. There is also a good deal to see and visit in the surrounding area - thoroughly recommended!

All of our party enjoyed this superb property. We were 9 adults and 5 children. There was something for everyone. A well equipped games room was a welcome respite from the extreme heat of the day outside. Both the house and cottage were equipped to a high standard. Of course with a few pianists in our family the piano and our granddaughter's guitar gave us many a musical moment. The pool has a good shaded area with lots of pool toys to amuse the little ones. We found some very pretty villages and particularly enjoyed the town and market in Eymet. Some of our party enjoyed fly fishing in the river nearby. In fact we liked our holiday so much that we have booked again for next August, which speaks for itself.

The place to make family memories
An extended family holiday. We arrived from far and wide (5 flights to get there was the record) and how the journey was worth it! Whether you are 1 or 63 or somewhere in between you are catered for superbly. From the cots, high chairs and toys to the pool, games room and field. From the superbly equipped kitchen to the individually pleasing bedrooms and welcomingly cool sitting room. Nothing has been overlooked. And all around the property inside and out are little nooks and crannies with a cast iron bucket here and a sculpture there. This is a place to enjoy with all the senses.

Wonderful property for a family holiday
We were a family of 8 adults and 7 children aged between 5 and 13 years. The large bedrooms enabled us to sleep very comfortably in this spacious property. The house is furnished exactly to our taste and it felt like home, except the cookers are far superior to mine! With two pianists in the party, imagine our delight to discover a grand piano in the lounge. The children never wanted to leave the house as it is so well equipped, inside and outside. They played in the games room, the pool and the grounds where we held our own Olympics, one day. The owners were the most efficient I have ever dealt with, with prompt answers to questions and a very quick return of the deposit. The weather was amazing but even in less benign weather this property has so much to keep even the most demanding guest entertained. We would recommend it, without hesitation.

An Oasis of pure delight
The House is wonderful and provides the quintessential atmosphere that Francophiles are seeking. Four adult couples and five children easily accommodated in a lovingly restored property with enough room for all to enjoy without invading the space of each other. Facilities second to none and it now boasts a 'new' number on the outside which is 41,so easy to find!! A truly Five Star experience. We all want to return but that will need careful planning as half of the party live in Sydney!!

Superb family accommodation in the Dordogne
This large well appointed property gave our family group of 14 the space to be together in comfort. The accommodation delivered what it said on the tin. It was well equipped and flexible and full of character and charm with lots of space outside for a wide range of activities. It is well placed to explore and enjoy what the area has to offer yet it is privately positioned on the edge of a small community. The booking arrangements were straightforward and the owner and his agent were attentive, helpful and prompt in dealing with matters arising. We holiday together as an extended family most years and have stayed in some very attractive properties but this is the first occasion when the family has spontaneously said that it would be pleased to return to a property. We are happy to recommend it to others.

Fantastic place to celebrate a 70 th Birthday
The holiday exceeded all expectations as Les OIseaux is the most amazing place to holiday with families. Everything is provided to an exceptional standard , we were not lacking for anything. The house and cottage are most comfortable, antiques abound but the accomodation is light and airy. There are places for each family to do their own thing and the choice of places to eat outside was varied and comfortable with views on all sides. Some days the weather was a bit grey but even so we didn't have time to use all the games on offer. The children loved the big games room and the electronic games room was a big hit .The field was ideal for letting off steam and collecting grasshoppers and other " bugs " , such freedom ! The pool was in constant use and much bigger than appears in the photos. On the hot days the house was delightfully cool inside. At home we have told everyone about this amazing place and highly recommend it .One of our party flew to Bergerac from New York/Stanstead, and hiring a car from Bergerac was no problem.

Wonderful family holiday
3 generations of our family, 6 adults, 3 teenagers and a one year old have just spent a wonderful week in this beautifully restored farmhouse. The facilities and the location cannot be bettered and fully justify all the 5 star ratings. The comments in all the other reviews are spot on so I will not repeat them here. The games room. the pool and the field where we played cricket were in constant use and the morning trip to the local boulangerie started each day off perfectly. Despite some 35C+ days the interior of the house remained cool. We have no hesitation in recommending Les Oiseaux - it is ideal for large family groups and the owners as well as Liz and Francois locally were so helpful. We hope to be back!!

A great house for a special celebration
From different directions we descended on Moncaret for a 60th birthday celebration and we were so pleased when we fell upon Les Oiseaux. It is such a pleasant house and the 14 of us spent an almost perfect week there. The 14th person had a slightly small bedroom to contend with and the weather could have been better but those were our only misgivings. Other than that it was perfect and our thanks to Liz for helping us when needed. A very special holiday. Oh by the way we all enjoyed our visit to Duras and the castle.

traditional french country house
My family (6xchildren and 7x adults) has just enjoyed a very successful fortnight in Les Oiseau. The property consists of the main house and an adjoining cottage so would be very suitable for two families. We slept 5 in the cottage which is very spacious. In fact space is one of the big positives of this property, there is loads of it. The children particularly enjoyed the games room with table tennis and snooker the attractions .Outside in its 5 acres is a large swimming pool and plenty of room for football and cricket etc.In the vilage is an excellent boulangerie so breakfast is sorted every morning.A wonderful place for a family holiday

Happy days!
The house and its facilities could not be bettered for a full extended family gathering. The pool , the games rooms and space for outside games make it ideal for children and for parents who enjoy a little competition! The local lake, kayaking at St Seurin sur L'Isle, better in some ways for a party of mixed age and strength than that on the Dordogne, and St Emilion were highlights of the area, the local towns being somewhat unexciting unless for rehearsing, revising?, the 100 Years War. That said the mighty river Dordogne does lift the whole area. A wonderfully enjoyable stay in every way and thanks to Liz for invaluable help, with local knowledge and organising babysitting.

Superb Holiday Home
This is a beautiful house - it is spacious, well equipped with everything you want for a relaxing holiday. It is perfectly positioned between St Emilion and Bergerac in a village which has an excellent bakery. It has a large swimming pool set in beautiful gardens with space to eat either at the front or back of the house. We had great fun in the games room with snooker, table tennis and table football competitions! It is surrounded by great cycling countryside and is also close to a beach lake. We had a great time and I would certainly recommend this house.
