Region: Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
Town: Amble, a bustling little seaport at the mouth of the River Coquet, is a great starting point for exploring Northumberland. Amble, once a boatbuilding centre, now has a marina, a harbour, sandy beaches, and coastal hikes to Hauxley Bird Sanctuary and Druridge Bay Country Park. Fish, prawns, crabs, and lobsters are landed by large fishing boats moored along the harbour wall. On the other side of the port, there is a fish centre that sells local fish and is open to the public. It is now mostly a shell fish hatchery to re-stock stocks of lobster and other shell fish.
